Battle stars: transcriptions conflict - HazeGray reads eleven, HyperWar reads ten.

Newport News construction trades 1935-38; crew 1938-46; Mare Island and Philadelphia repair-yard workers 1942-43
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. DANFS gives no laid-down date for this hull (keel 1 April 1935 verified via BuShips Ships' Data 1945 construction row, ev-02) and no stricken date; Argentine-service dates rest on secondary references and are flagged in gaps. The Philadelphia reconstruction is a documented deep-yard event whose insulation scope is inference. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

    Finding
Official 1945 BuShips tabulation supplies the date DANFS omits: the CL construction table lists Boise (Newport News S. B. & D. D. Co.) with keel laid 1 April 1935, launched 3 December 1936 (alphabetical CL row 6), and the CL machinery table lists this hull with 4 shafts, N.N. Parsons-type geared turbines, 100,000 shp - the Brooklyn-class machinery suite.

    Limitations
Official machinery/construction data only - contains no asbestos, insulation-material, or condition content. OCR extraction of a scan; row identification by alphabetical CL row position (row 6 = Boise); the steam-pressure columns on this row are OCR-degraded but the turbine-family reading is unambiguous.

    Finding
The Navy's own insulation manual enumerates the asbestos material suite standard to steam plants of this hull's construction era: MIL-P-2781 pipe covering including 85% magnesia (~15% asbestos fiber) and amosite-fiber classes; roll asbestos felt MIL-I-15091; asbestos cloth/tape SS-C-466 (80-95% chrysotile) as lagging; asbestos millboard HH-M-351; asbestos finishing cement; molded asbestos block for high-temperature service.

1960 (manual); describes specifications representative of 1935-38 practice
    Population
    n/a
    Limitations
Specification-level era documentation, not a hull record - the manual is 1959-60 vintage while this hull was built 1935-38; the same material family is documented for 1930s practice but the manual postdates construction by two decades. Does not quantify material aboard. Retrieved PDF is a scan hosted in the Garlock bankruptcy Daubert-appendix repository.

    Finding
Era inference for this hull: a Brooklyn-class cruiser built 1935-38 with the documented 8-boiler/100,000-shp steam plant would era-typically have carried asbestos boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe and turbine lagging, gaskets and packing, deck covering, and bulkhead/cable insulation. The documented deep-yard events - grounding repairs at Mare Island (early 1942) and the four-month Philadelphia Navy Yard reconstruction after Cape Esperance shellfire (19 November 1942 - 20 March 1943) - opened machinery and hull spaces where original-era material would have been disturbed.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The Philadelphia repair period is documented by exact dates but its insulation scope is inference from work extent; no work package or abatement record for CL-47 is digitized. Does not quantify material aboard or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
Foreign-transfer material status undocumented: sold to Argentina 11 January 1951 and served as Nueve de Julio; secondary references give Argentine stricken ~1978 and scrapping ~1983. No condition survey, abatement record, or materials accounting from transfer through 27+ years of Argentine service is located in U.S. sources.

Documents custody only - Argentine-service material history (1951-78/83) is outside U.S. documentation; whether original-era asbestos material was present, removed, or replaced during foreign service is unknown. The 1978/1983 foreign-service dates rest on secondary references, not a cited primary record.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming CL-47 located: a per-ship exact-phrase opinion sweep ('USS Boise' + asbestos) run 2026-09-16 across the class member names returned zero qualifying results. A fresh per-ship re-verification and RECAP/docket expansion on 2026-09-18 was blocked - the CourtListener API returned HTTP 429 (daily 125-request limit exhausted; ~44,400 s to reset), so opinion-level re-check and any docket-level coverage remain unexecuted.

    Limitations
The 2026-09-16 sweep covered type=o opinions at class level only and predates this record by two days; docket-level (type=r) coverage and exact-name re-verification are deferred and logged as a gap. A negative result does not establish that no case exists - 'Boise' is also a place name and Argentine-service-era claims would fall outside U.S. indexed coverage.

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos documentation of any kind was located for CL-47: no insulation or material specification, no hull survey, no abatement contract or hazmat disclosure (including for the 1942 Mare Island grounding repairs or the 1942-43 Philadelphia reconstruction), no qualifying litigation. All asbestos-relevant content in this record rests on class/era specification (BuShips TM ch.39), the documented uniform plant (Ships' Data), and documented repair and foreign-transfer events.
