M. Elder, USNR, in command. On 29 August 1944 Bombard arrived at Tutuila, Samoa, where she conducted anti-submarine patrols until 2 September when she departed for Pearl Harbor and San Francisco. She reached San Francisco 22 September and ten days later got underway for Alaska. She carried out patrol and minesweeping duties in Alaskan waters until decommissioned and transferred to the U. S. S. R., 18 July 1845 [sic - 1945] under Lend-Lease. Bombard remains in Russian hands. She was reclassified MSF-151, 7 February 1955.'

    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, builder, reclassification, dates, and the service narrative - not materials or asbestos content; the entry contains no materials statement of any kind. The mirror's '18 July 1845' is a transcription typo for 1945. The transcriber's appended note ('T-526', 'scrapped in the USSR in 1956') is not DANFS text and conflicts with Russell's official NHHC appendix (T-336; 1963-stricken) - flagged in ev-08. Transfer date 18 Jul vs Russell's 19 Jul - flagged in ev-08. DANFS spec block (530 t., 10' draft, 15 k., 1x3") differs from NavSource (650 t., 9'9", 14.8 k., fuller armament) - variances flagged in ev-08.

Adjacent TASCO Admirable-class rows document the build block around her: hull 58 Astute (AM 148, delivered 17-Jan-44), 59 Augury (AM 149, 17-Mar-44), 60 Barrier (AM 150, 10-May-44), 62 Crag (AM 214, 1-Aug-44 - completed at Charleston NSY, to Mexico 1962). Yard context: TASCO grew from Tampa Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. (1917), was renamed by George B. Russell's appendix row for this hull: 'Bombard (AM 151) | T-336 | 19 Jul. | 1963-stricken' - establishing the Soviet designation T-336 (not the T-526 printed by Colton/uboat/hazegray; Russell assigns T-526 to ex-USS YMS-435 in the same table), the transfer date 19 July 1945 (vs 18 July in DANFS/NavSource/uboat - flagged in ev-08), and the 1963 stricken disposition (vs Colton's 'scrapped 1954' and the hazegray note's '1956'). Program context from the same source: transfers staged at Fort Randall/Cold Bay under Navy Detachment 3294; Soviet crews underwent weeks of gunnery/engineering/minesweeping familiarization training; transferred ships steamed in convoy part-way under U.S. escort to Soviet home ports, usually via Petropavlovsk Naval Base.

    Finding
Era/design inference: this hull is a 1943-launched steel minesweeper built at TASCO to the Admirable-class design, powered by two ALCO 539 diesels through a single reduction gear on two shafts - diesel direct-drive, no boilers, no steam distribution. Her insulation load was materially lighter than a steam vessel's, but machinery and construction materials of a 1943 wartime build were commonly asbestos-containing: exhaust-system and muffler lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical-cable insulation, accommodation/galley joiner insulation, winch and minesweep-gear brake linings, and deck compositions of the period. Exposure-relevant populations if any material was present: TASCO construction trades (Tampa, 1942-44); the wartime U.S. crew (design complement 104) during the May 1944-July 1945 commission including the Samoa patrols and Alaska tour; Cold Bay transfer-program personnel (Navy Detachment 3294) and the Soviet crew of T-336/Gydan 1945-63 - a population effectively invisible to U.S. claimant channels.

    Limitations
Inference from documented design, machinery type, and construction era - NOT a hull materials record. No survey, specification, or material schedule naming Bombard, AM-151, AMc-128, T-336, or Gydan was located; establishes no asbestos content, quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. The diesel plant makes even era-level inference weaker than for steam vessels of the same era. The hull was scrapped in the USSR in 1963 - no present-day survey pathway exists.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and wartime construction program under which this hull was built at TASCO, Tampa, in 1942-44. The USMC-commissioned 1944-45 industrial-hygiene survey of pipe-covering operations at Navy and contract yards documented that 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels is amosite.'

    Finding
Source discrepancies logged, not silently merged: (a) Soviet designation - Russell's official NHHC appendix and NavSource print T-336; Colton's yard table ('T 526'), uboat.net ('T-526'), and the hazegray transcriber's note ('T-526') conflict - Russell assigns T-526 to ex-USS YMS-435 in the same table, so the T-526 reading for this hull is almost certainly an error propagated through secondary sources; T-336 carried. (b) Transfer date - DANFS, NavSource, and uboat print 18 July 1945; Russell's appendix prints 19 Jul; NavSource's chronology adds that she was 'assigned to the Pacific Fleet 11 August 1945' - 18 Jul carried for the U.S. decommissioning event, 19 Jul noted for the Soviet-side record; unresolved. (c) Disposition - Russell '1963-stricken' vs NavSource 'Scrapped 12 February 1963' vs Colton 'scrapped 1954' vs hazegray transcriber 'reputed to have been scrapped in the USSR in 1956' - 1963 carried (Russell + NavSource agree on year), precise mechanism/date unresolved. (d) Specs - DANFS 'dp. 530; dr. 10'; s. 15 k.; a. 1 3"' vs NavSource '650 t.; 9'9"; 14.8 kts.; one 3"/50 DP, two twin 40mm, hedgehog, two DC tracks' vs Colton '650d, 180 ft' - DANFS/NavSource both carried with variance flagged; Colton's 180 ft is a register-length convention. (e) Soviet-service particulars - 'dispatch ship 4 March 1953', 'named Gydan 16 June 1954', 'Pacific Fleet 11 August 1945' rest on NavSource alone - uncorroborated, flagged. (f) DANFS mirror typo '18 July 1845' - transcription artifact for 1945, noted. (g) Wikipedia-only details not corroborated: Panama Canal transit 'end of July 1944' and Canal Zone departure 1 Aug 1944; Alaska arrival 'end of the first week in November 1944'; immediate Soviet commissioning at Cold Bay - logged, none carried as fact. (h) 'Ordered 30 Dec 1941' rests on uboat.net alone.

CourtListener status this session: the public web opinion index returned 0 results for exact-name '"USS Bombard"' (type=o) before automated access was challenged (CloudFront/WAF HTTP 202 challenge, then empty responses); the authenticated REST API v4 was already exhausted - HTTP 429 'Rate limit exceeded: 2800/day' with retry-after ~10,788s (shared batch quota consumed by parallel runs); the feeds/search endpoint returned 403. Variant queries ('AM-151', 'AMc-128', 'aboard the Bombard', 'Bombard asbestos') and all RECAP docket sweeps are logged BLOCKED in the search ledger, not retried into a ban - per batch rules. Sister-hull precedent: identical authenticated sweeps for Admirable AM-136 (batch-1169) and Eagle AM-132 (batch-1165) returned zero qualifying litigation, consistent with this hull's partial result but not a substitute for it. A mesothelioma.com minesweeper-jobsites roster prints 'USS Bombard | AM-151 | Admirable | 5/31/1944 | To Soviet Union, 1945' in a generic table - excluded per source rules; it carries no hull-specific evidence.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials even accounting for her lighter diesel insulation load. The hull's scrapping in the USSR in 1963 forecloses any present-day survey pathway. The litigation sweep is INCOMPLETE - the exact-name opinion query returned 0, but hull-number variants and RECAP docket coverage were blocked by quota/WAF throttling this session and remain an open task for a future pass. No case located names this hull under any of her identities (see negative_finding row and search_ledger - sweep partial, quota-limited). Doctrinal context only for the vessel's type: claims arising from WWII-era Navy-vessel asbestos exposure ran under maritime law against equipment manufacturers, and the Supreme Court's DeVries decision settled the 'bare-metal defense' framework - manufacturers that supplied bare equipment had a duty to warn where their products required asbestos-containing parts. It illustrates the litigation posture a claim arising from service aboard this WWII diesel minesweeper would have faced; no such claim naming Bombard/AM-151/AMc-128 was located.
