Edge, Sr. (widow of the last CO of the first Bonefish, SS-223); commissioned 9 July 1959, Lt. Comdr. Elmer H. Kiehl. Spec block: 1,690 t surfaced / 2,145 submerged; 219' x 29' x 28'; 15/25 kt; complement 77; six 21-inch torpedo tubes; class Barbel. Service: Pacific Fleet from 1960 (SubDiv 33 San Diego); WestPac/7th Fleet deployments incl. Gulf of Tonkin (1966, 1971); home ports San Diego, Pearl Harbor (1963), San Diego (1977), Charleston SC (1982); UNITAS South America 1979; NATO North Atlantic exercises 1982. Decommissioned 28 September 1988; stricken 28 February 1989; 'disposed of by scrapping on 17 August 1989.' DANFS entry ends 'Updates for 1984 to 1988 pending.'

    Limitations
Ship-specific operational history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS narrative stops at 1984 ('updates pending') - the April 1988 fire is not covered by this source. Spec-block displacement figures (1,690/2,145) sit lower than sisters' (2,145/2,895) - printed as published, discrepancy logged.

Contemporaneous press on the fire and its aftermath: explosions and fire tore through the diesel submarine on 24 April 1988 during exercises off Florida; 92-member crew abandoned ship; 22 sailors injured, 3 killed; towed by salvage ship USS Hoist to Charleston for the JAG investigation directed by Capt. Robin White (COMSUBRON 18). USNI Proceedings (May 1989) records her 'declared a constructive total loss.' Damage judged too extensive to repair; decommissioned 28 September 1988.

    Finding
Qualifying ship-specific asbestos claim - adjudicated to denial: BVA Citation Nr. 22045084 (9 August 2022, Docket 19-04 245). A veteran (USN Dec 1974-Nov 1978) alleged exposure to asbestos, lead paint, PCBs, toxic waste aboard USS Bonefish (SS-582) and as a Navy diver, claiming ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, aortic insufficiency, and carotid atherosclerosis. The Board found 'insufficient evidence to establish exposure to asbestos, lead paint, PCBs, toxic waste, and the other toxic chemicals alleged,' noted the deck logs of USS Bonefish 'have not yet been digitized,' and observed that his Quartermaster specialty 'would have not been involved in the removal of pipe insulation or similar duties.' All claims denied.

    individual claimant (Quartermaster, 1974-78)
    Limitations
Merits-level denial of an alleged exposure aboard this hull: the claim reached adjudication and failed for insufficient evidence. This is NOT a finding that asbestos was aboard, and equally not a finding that it was not - exposure was simply not established. Documents that an exposure claim for this hull was litigated and denied; does not establish or defeat any other claimant's case.

Court-documented era regime applicable to this hull's construction period: Navy thermal-insulation specifications (32-I-3/MIL-I-2819 block insulation; 32-P-8/MIL-I-2781 pipe insulation) accepted asbestos-containing insulation products such as Owens-Illinois Kaylo on Navy Qualified Products Lists, and asbestos-content warnings were not required until after the 1950s; submarine-insulation specification MIL-I-24244 continued the regime into the SUBSAFE era.

Era inference for this hull: built 1957-59 at New York Shipbuilding (Camden) and maintained through Navy-yard availabilities at Mare Island (1961-62 overhaul), Pearl Harbor (1964, 1968-69, 1972-73, 1976-77, 1979 overhauls), and Charleston Naval Shipyard (1983-84 overhaul) - all inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era, before insulation substitution began in the early 1970s. All four yards carry documented asbestos product lists in the companion shipyard dataset (Pabco Caltemp block, Ehret 85% magnesia, Unibestos, Marinite, magnesia pipe insulation, gaskets, packing, and similar).

    Finding
Beyond the denied BVA claim (ev-05), no qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located for this hull: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos court case naming USS Bonefish (SS-582) was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener-indexed results for the name were overwhelmingly Bonefish Grill restaurant litigation - name collisions.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener coverage was throttle-limited; the sweep is partial, not exhaustive. The scrapping facility that processed the hull (post-1989 sale) is not identified in located sources - its asbestos handling is undocumented. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
