Documented for this hull: launched 9 June 1925 as V-3 by Portsmouth Navy Yard (sponsor Mrs. L. R. DeSteiguer); commissioned 22 May 1926, Lt. Cmdr. C. A. Lockwood Jr. Submarine Division 20 east coast/Caribbean to Nov 1927; Pacific transfer, San Diego 17 December 1927; SubDivs 20 and 12 Pacific coast/Hawaii; SubDiv 15 Rotating Reserve, Mare Island Navy Yard, 1 June 1932; renamed Bonita 9 March 1931, reclassified SS-165 1 July 1931; rejoined SubDiv 12 September 1933, Caribbean/west coast/Hawaiian waters through 1936; out of commission in reserve, Philadelphia Navy Yard, 4 June 1937. Recommissioned 5 September 1940; departed New London 17 November 1940 for Coco Solo, C.Z.; patrolled the Pacific off Panama until October 1942 Philadelphia overhaul; patrolled off the Maine coast until mid-1943, then SubDiv 13, SubRon 1, training duty out of New London to February 1945; arrived Philadelphia Navy Yard 17 February 1945; decommissioned 3 March 1945; sold 28 October 1945. Portsmouth NY construction trades (1921-26); crews 1926-37 and 1940-45; Mare Island and Philadelphia yard trades at availabilities
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content in the source. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-09-19; verbatim LostHistory/HazeGray transcription of DANFS Vol. I used.

    Finding
NHHC narrative adds detail beyond DANFS: V-3 was 'last of a class of three submarines intended to operate closely with the battle fleet,' keel laid 16 November 1921 at Portsmouth Navy Yard; the design 'had proven to be not very satisfactory,' prompting the 1937 reserve lay-up. WWII: recommissioned September 1940; 'stationed in Panama from late in 1940 until October 1942, conducting defensive patrols off Central America's Pacific coast. Rebuilt beginning in late 1942, Bonita was returned to service as a specialized cargo-carrying submarine in mid-1943, but was quickly found unsuitable for that role'; training duty at New London thereafter. NARA photo captions in the same NHHC series document her underway 6 April 1943 (80-G-450191) and in 'final configuration as a cargo submarine' 13 September 1944 (80-G-453370).

Photo-documented yard events for this hull: V-3 in Mare Island dry dock 1, 28 March - 11 April 1929 (USN photos 9206, 9254, 9258, incl. rare interior crew-quarters shot); Bonita and Bass (SS-164) in Mare Island dry dock 1 during overhaul, May 1933, undocked 7 July, re-docked 18 July - 8 September 1933 (HABS No. CA-1543-BP-19 image via Library of Congress). Spec summary: Busch-Sulzer diesels 4100 hp; Elliott motors 2400 hp; 120 battery cells; twin propellers; complement 6 officers + 50 enlisted; struck 10 March 1945; sold for scrapping 28 October 1945. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-curated archive, not an official repository - dates/specs treated as a lead layer corroborated where possible against DANFS and USN/NARA photo numbers; the drydock and overhaul dates trace to USN photo captions and the Mare Island HABS series rather than to yard work orders. No asbestos content.

    Locator

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A Navy fleet submarine built 1921-26 and refit through 1945 sits inside the service's asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel-electric boat of this type were concentrated in engine exhaust lagging, machinery and piping insulation, flange gaskets, and valve/shaft packing, plus insulation aboard auxiliary machinery. All three yards in her documented availability history (Portsmouth build; Mare Island 1929/1933; Philadelphia 1937/1942-43/1945) have yard-level asbestos product documentation. The 1942-43 cargo conversion - removal of the main engines and rework of auxiliary machinery spaces - is a yard-period disturbance event consistent with insulation and gasket disturbance, by era inference.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, survey, or work-order detail located for SS-165. Diesel boats carried no boilers or steam mains, so the exposure surface is smaller than a steam plant's; no quantity can be stated. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present aboard this hull, nor exposure, causation, or eligibility for any individual.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS Bonita (SS-165) or V-3 (SF-6) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API could not be queried directly on 2026-09-19 (HTTP 429, daily rate cap exhausted); web-indexed CourtListener results for 'Bonita' were all name collisions unrelated to this vessel (e.g., Bonita Fabrics Inc., City of Bonita Springs, party-name 'Bonita M. Hawkins'). Asbestos-context web results naming SS-165 were law-firm marketing listicles - excluded sources. Name-collision hazard documented: a second USS Bonita (SSK-3/SS-552, Mare Island-built, in service 1952-1965) shares the name; any unqualified 'Bonita' docket string requires disambiguation before attribution to this hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1920s Navy construction is era-consistent with asbestos insulation, and the hull's 1945 scrapping forecloses any modern survey. The litigation sweep is incomplete: direct CourtListener API queries were rate-limited and RECAP docket text was not exhaustively searched. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Archival lead layer: NARA holds a compartment-access drawing/photo for this hull (identifier 70646216) and the 80-G still-picture series documenting the 1943-44 cargo configuration. Deck logs for Bonita's commissioned periods should exist in RG 24 holdings. These records were located but their content was not reviewed for material or maintenance detail.

Deck-log digitization status for this hull unverified; RG 24 logs and any yard work-order/jacket files (RG 181 for the navy yards) are the primary path to any ship-specific material record, which currently does not exist in this dataset.
