DANFS final narrative for this hull: put to sea 30 July 1943 as a member of the hunter-killer group built around Card (CVE-11); made four patrols with the Card group; on 1 November 1943, during the last patrol, rammed and sank the surfaced German submarine U-405 in 49 deg 00' N., 31 deg 14' W.; with 27 men lost and too badly damaged by the collision to be towed to port, Borie was sunk by Barry (DD-248) 2 November 1943. Received three battle stars for World War II service and the Presidential Unit Citation for her operations in the Card group.

    Limitations

Scuttle-agent detail differs from the action-report-based Destroyer History Foundation account (torpedoes from Barry and Goff missed; bombs from Card aircraft sank her) - the discrepancy is carried in gaps. Battle-star count (three) conflicts with the DHF narrative's 'four service stars.'

    Finding
Ship-specific primary documentation of the last action and loss: radar contact on U-405 at 0153 ship time 1 November; depth-charge attack forced it to surface; surface action of about an hour and a quarter; Borie rammed at ~25 knots, a wave lifted her bow onto the U-boat's foredeck, and the ships locked together about 25-30 degrees off parallel for ~10 minutes while the crew fired small arms at point-blank range (a sheath knife and an empty 4-inch shell case were thrown); the pounding crushed and holed Borie's port side below the waterline along both engine rooms. U-405's crew abandoned into rafts and the sub sank (uboat.net records 49 dead, all hands); a white star and a torpedo from a second U-boat forced Borie to maneuver through the rafts area, running over them. Forward engine room flooded completely; saltwater feed reduced speed to ~10 knots; the emergency radio generator was restarted with lighter fluid and torpedo alcohol; abandon ship at 1630 on 1 November - Goff (DD-247) took 7 officers and 99 men, Barry (DD-248) 1 officer and 22 men, 27 lost; the still-afloat hulk was sunk 2 November after Barry and Goff torpedoes missed and 4-inch fire proved ineffective - bombs from Card aircraft finished her. Earlier: December 1941 flagship of DesDiv 67; 15 June 1942 rescue of USAT Merrimac survivors; November 1942 Philadelphia, then New Orleans overhaul; Escort Unit 23.2.4 Trinidad-Recife February-May 1943; TU 21.14 from July 1943.

Later, when submarines returned with deadlier weapons and augmented anti-aircraft defenses, this heroic Task Unit, by striking damaging blows at the onset of renewed campaigns, wrested the initiative from the enemy...' NARA's Ship Plan Index lists BORIE DD-215 in Record Group 19 under Alphabetical Ship Drawings (NAID 53483810) - a lead for hull-specific plans that may carry insulation and piping callouts. The index separately lists BORIE DD-704 (the second Borie, Allen M. Sumner class, commissioned 1944) under Hull series Ship Engineering Drawings (NAID 153714688) and Microfilm (NAID 175668468), and a 'BORIE DD-214' Microfilm entry (NAID 175668467) that does not reconcile with hull assignments - DD-214 was USS Tracy.

Era/design inference: a 1919-20 Cramp-built Clemson-class steam-plant destroyer with four boilers and geared turbines, refit as a squadron leader (San Diego 1932-33) and overhauled at New Orleans (late 1942-early 1943) with repairs in New York (early July 1943), was built and maintained in the period when asbestos thermal insulation on boilers, steam piping, and turbines and asbestos gaskets, packing, and fireproofing were standard Navy practice. No yard-level asbestos record can be attached: builder William Cramp and Sons is not in the Atlas shipyard dataset, and the specific yards for the 1942-43 New Orleans overhaul and July 1943 New York repairs are not identified in reviewed sources.

Class/era inference only - no ship-specific asbestos finding exists for this hull, and none can postdate her November 1943 sinking. Construction-era materials inference for a 1919-20 hull is weaker than for WWII-built classes; the absence of builder-yard documentation removes the corroboration other records carry. Emanuel, 'worked in the United States Navy aboard the USS Borie and USS Douglas H. Fox as a machinist from 1960 to 1963.' DD-215 was sunk 2 November 1943; the only USS Borie in service during 1960-1963 is the second Borie, DD-704 (Allen M. Sumner class, commissioned 21 September 1944, in service into the 1970s).
