- Locator

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The NHL nomination describes this hull as a World War II diesel-electric fleet submarine afloat at Pearl Harbor in a 'Mediterranean' moor, restored for public access through four deck access hatches, with two diesel-electric engines in each engine room. It records that her 126 one-ton battery cells in the forward battery compartment were removed and replaced by gravel ballast for museum display. Notes she was en route to Guam on her tenth war patrol when the Japanese surrender was announced. Credited with 67,882 tons of enemy shipping; ranks in the top twenty-five U.S. submarines in both ships and tonnage sunk; nomination describes her as displayed in her wartime home port and the most-attended submarine museum in the nation (over 200,000 visitors/year).

- Locator
- class-f/balao-class.class.json (house class profile)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Balao-class context: diesel-electric fleet submarines with no boilers or steam plant; era-consistent asbestos pathways for the class include diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration materials, and battery/electrical materials. Construction (1942-43) and service-era yard periods (New London, San Diego, Mare Island 1953-54) fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - does not name this hull, does not establish that any asbestos-containing material is or was installed aboard SS-287, and does not establish quantity or present-day presence. The class profile's only ship-level litigation allegation (USS Clamagore, SS-343) does not transfer to Bowfin. No hull-specific insulation survey or material list was located.
