- Identity/construction record only; contains no asbestos information and establishes nothing about materials aboard, exposure, or causation. history.navy.mil returned HTTP 503 to direct WebFetch and curl failed TLS verification upstream this session; the DANFS text was retrieved only indirectly, through search-engine queries restricted to history.navy.mil that resolved to this page. [3]NHHC DANFS, "Boxwood" (boxwood-i) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS entry, service and disposition paragraphs (indirect retrieval)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS service narrative: departing the Seattle area on 26 June 1943, Boxwood relieved Buckeye (YN-8) at Adak in the Aleutians, assisted in installing antitorpedo net lines at Adak and Sand Bay, and helped lay fleet mooring buoys; while operating there she was redesignated AN-8 on 20 January 1944. She was decommissioned on 13 November 1946, turned over to the Portland, Oregon Sub-group of the 19th Fleet and moored at Swan Island, Portland; she remained inactive until struck from the Navy list on 9 October 1962.

- Finding
- MARAD Vessel History Database record 'BOXWOOD (YN-3/AN-8)': built 1941; shipyard Lake Washington Shipbuilding; specific type 'AN Net Laying Ship'; length 162.16 ft; beam 30.50 ft; gross tons 550; displacement 700 tons lightweight / 805 tons summer; fate 'Sold - NTU'. Milestones: entry/acquisition 1961-05-26; disposition and withdrawal 1976-02-24 ('CUST 1961 NDRF 1962'). The digitized status card records delivery by the Navy Department to the Reserve Fleet (custody) on 5-26-61 at 10:35 AM PDST and from the Navy Department (M.A. Fleet) to the Maritime Administration on 9-1-62 at 12:01 AM PDST, both at Suisun Bay (custody, then permanent transfer).

- Limitations
- Authoritative for government custody milestones and registry particulars. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition-survey information and supports no asbestos claim. 'Sold - NTU' (non-transportation use) does not say to whom or for what purpose she was sold, and no scrapping record was located. The card places her at Suisun Bay in 1961-62, while DANFS places her 1946 lay-up at Swan Island, Portland; the date of any move between reserve sites was not found.

[5]NHHC DANFS "Boxwood" (ev-01, ev-03); MARAD Detail 583 status card (ev-04); NARA Navy filing manual as carried at batch-1588/uss-roller-amc52:research/uss-roller-amc52/nara-filing-manual.txt [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS disposition paragraph (indirect); MARAD status card lines 1-2; filing-manual lines 15918, 17606, 17966 of the batch-1588 extract
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Source discrepancies logged, not resolved: (a) the MARAD status card records permanent transfer to the Maritime Administration on 1962-09-01, while DANFS gives the Navy-list strike date as 1962-10-09 (about five weeks later); (b) DANFS places the 1946 lay-up at Swan Island, Portland, Oregon, while MARAD records 1961-62 custody at Suisun Bay, California. Neither conflict bears on identity. (c) Name: DANFS records the hull as ordered under the name Birch and renamed Boxwood before construction; NARA's filing manual lists 'YN3 BIRCH (now Boxwood)'.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents extensive use of asbestos as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during the 1940s, when World War II industrial expansion produced an unprecedented rise in asbestos use - the period (1940-1941) in which this hull was built.

- WWII shipyard workers (program-level context)
- Limitations
- Era-level scholarship verified at the abstract level only (full text not read). It does not name this vessel, Lake Washington Shipyard, the Aloe class, or net tenders, and does not establish that asbestos was ever installed aboard this hull, where, in what quantity, or that anyone was exposed. Context for research prioritization only, never a ship-specific finding. The propulsion plant of this hull was not confirmed from a primary source, so no boiler, steam-lagging or engine-room inference is made.

- Locator

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located for Boxwood (YN-3/AN-8): no asbestos survey, abatement or overhaul record naming asbestos-containing material, reserve-fleet hazmat disclosure, sale-condition document, or class-specific technical document identifying asbestos products was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). The MARAD record holds a status card only; it lists no plans and no other documents.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove asbestos was absent aboard this hull; it records only that none surfaced in this session, whose access to NHHC, NVR and NavSource was blocked or indirect. Does not establish or defeat any exposure, causation, or eligibility claim. Records held by the 1976 buyer, if any, were not searched.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No asbestos litigation naming this vessel was located in CourtListener. Opinions: 0 hits for "USS Boxwood"/"U.S.S. Boxwood"; 0 hits for Boxwood + asbestos + Navy/ship terms; the hull-number query (YN-3/AN-8) returned 12,424 opinions driven by 'AN 8'/'YN 3' token noise, and a narrowed hull + net-tender + asbestos query returned 9 opinions with no ship reference. RECAP: in asbestos personal-injury suits (nature of suit 368), the only 'Boxwood' document (Collins v. Metropolitan Life, D. Del. 1:07-cv-00149, ECF No. 1 exhibits) refers to the General Motors assembly plant on Boxwood Road, New Castle County, Delaware (17 matches, all the plant) - a name collision. Nine asbestos complaints matching hull tokens contain no literal 'AN-8', and their 'YN' matches are OCR fragments and names. Docket-level 'Boxwood' hits (46) are bankruptcy and other mega-dockets (street and company names).

- Limitations
- Negative result for the CourtListener corpus only; CourtListener does not index most state-court asbestos dockets, bankruptcy-trust claims, or sealed/settled matters. 'Boxwood' is a common street, plant and company name, and 'AN-8'/'YN-3' tokenize as common words; collisions are not litigation about this vessel at any stage. Nothing here classifies any case at pleading, discovery, trial or judgment stage for this hull.
