- DANFS record for this hull: Fletcher-class destroyer (dp. 2050; l. 376'5"; b. 39'7"; dr. 17'9"; s. 35 k.; cpl. 329; a. 5 5", 10 21" tt.); launched 29 October 1942 by Bethlehem Steel Co., San Pedro, Calif., sponsored by Mrs. C. Recommissioned 24 November 1950; two Korean tours 1951-53 (TF 77, Formosa Strait Patrol, Wonsan blockade, Kojo amphibious demonstration); post-Korea west coast operations and three Far Eastern tours. 11 battle stars (WWII) and 5 (Korea).

- Bethlehem Steel San Pedro construction trades 1942-43; wartime and postwar crew (design complement 329)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry ends with post-Korean service ('three Far Eastern tours') and does not carry the 1969 decommissioning/striking/transfer - see ev-02/ev-03 for disposition. The ibiblio transcription contains a typo ('arriving 14 January 1943' at San Diego) corrected to 1946 by the Tin Can Sailors June 2015 DANFS text and destroyerhistory.org. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

[3]NavSource Naval History, Destroyer Photo Index DD-544 USS Boyd - Operational and Building Data [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource DD-544 page, 'Operational and Building Data' block and 'On Turkish Service' section
- Finding type

- Finding
- NavSource compiled operational/building data for this hull: laid down by Bethlehem Steel, San Pedro, 2 April 1942; launched 29 October 1942; commissioned 8 May 1943; decommissioned 15 January 1947; recommissioned 24 November 1950; decommissioned 1 October 1969; stricken 1 October 1969; transferred to Turkey 1 October 1969, renamed Iskenderun (D-343); stricken in 1981 and scrapped.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a compiled secondary reference (volunteer-maintained photo/history index), not an official record; its dates are corroborated by Tin Can Sailors (national destroyer-veterans association, carrying the June 2015 DANFS text plus the decommission/stricken line) and destroyerhistory.org. The 2 April 1942 laid-down date is carried from this source only - DANFS does not state one. Turkish Navy service details (1981 striking, scrapping) have no primary Turkish source located.

- Finding
- Corroborating ship-specific records: Boyd formed Destroyer Division 92 of Destroyer Squadron 46 with Bradford, Brown, and Cowell at Pearl Harbor in 1943 (destroyerhistory.org); completed 1943 off San Pedro (completion photo 22 May 1943); decommissioned 1 October 1969 and removed from the Navy list the same date; transferred to Turkey as TCG Iskenderun (D-343), serving until stricken and scrapped in 1981. Tin Can Sailors page adds call sign NAWT and the June 2015 DANFS disposition line ('Boyd was decommissioned on 1 October 1969 and removed from the Navy list on the same date ... Update for 1953 through 1969 pending.').

Turkish-era material history (maintenance, modifications, scrapping conditions) undocumented. A 1967-68 Vietnam-era shore-bombardment claim for this hull appears only in a crew forum post (koreanwar.org) and is unverified - not carried as fact.

[5]Tin Can Sailors Fletcher-class data block (DD-445 data as of 1945: 4 boilers, 2 GE turbines, 60,000 hp) + Destroyer History Foundation Bethlehem San Pedro builder page; NARA RG19 General Information Books archival lead [other_primary]
- Locator
- destroyers.org/ships/dd-544/ Fletcher class block; destroyerhistory.org/destroyers/bethsp/ builder page; NARA RG19 lead
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 with a four-boiler/60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder Bethlehem Steel San Pedro (Terminal Island, Berth 240 - leased by Bethlehem 1921, purchased 1925) was a MARAD-funded wartime expansion yard that built 26 destroyers including 10 Fletchers. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an unretrieved archival lead for hull-level specs.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding; no material schedule, hull survey, or abatement record for DD-544 has been located. The builder yard is not present in the Atlas shipyards dataset (37 yard_ids) - only mare-island-naval-shipyard resolves for this hull (1945 overhaul). Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing DD-544's construction (1942-43) and entire commissioned service (1943-1969, plus reserve period) inside the documented asbestos-use era.

- Finding
- No hull-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, materials inventory, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos litigation naming this vessel located in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener full-text opinion search for "USS Boyd" returned zero results; independent web search located one official adjudication naming this hull - a 1994 Board of Veterans' Appeals decision in a benzene-exposure claim, not asbestos (ev-07). The ship was transferred to Turkey in 1969 and scrapped in 1981 - no museum-disclosure channel exists. Law-firm ship pages listing DD-544 cite no ship-specific document.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level (ev-04, ev-05). The hull no longer exists; present-day ACM status is moot. The CourtListener hull-number and docket sweeps were paced out mid-session by the fleet-wide request budget - recorded in the search ledger; a complete exact-name + hull-number + RECAP sweep remains the open verification step.

[8]Board of Veterans' Appeals decision BVA9421638, Docket No. 91-13 740 (1994), on appeal from VARO San Juan - service connection for myelofibrosis (benzene exposure claim) GRANTED [other_primary]
- Locator
- BVA decision BVA9421638, 'Reasons and Bases' (veteran's service and duties recital); Finding of Fact (benzene exposure)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Official adjudicated record naming this hull: the Board recites that the veteran 'served in the Navy as a deckhand aboard the USS WORDEN (DLG-18) and the USS BOYD (DD-544)' during active duty March 1965 - March 1967, and that his painting duties 'sometimes took place below deck in enclosed spaces' with benzene/paint products and no protective gear. Service connection was granted on a benzene-exposure theory. The decision does not mention asbestos - it is a non-asbestos toxic-exposure adjudication; it is carried because it is an official record documenting a crewman's below-deck enclosed-space work aboard this hull in the 1965-67 window, and because it is the only vessel-named adjudication located for DD-544.

- One USS Boyd (DD-544) deckhand, active duty 1965-1967
- Limitations
- The adjudicated exposure is benzene, NOT asbestos - this row does not establish, allege, or imply asbestos conditions aboard; it documents crew duties and an enclosed-space work environment only. Aboard dates on Boyd vs. Worden are not broken out (service window 1965-03 to 1967-03 spans both). Administrative decision, not a court record. No asbestos mention anywhere in the decision text.
