- DANFS record for this hull: launched 2 July 1944 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Miss Elizabeth K. McGowan; commissioned 29 April 1945, Capt. J. B. Mallard in command. - Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content; the Vol. I (1964) entry ends mid-narrative and omits laid-down and decommissioning dates (carried from secondary sources in ev-04 and gaps). Mirror transcriptions cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Era inference: Baltimore-class construction (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, 4 GE geared steam turbines, ~120,000 shp, 565 psi/850 deg F) in 1943-45 at New York Shipbuilding, Camden falls squarely in the documented Navy asbestos-insulation era; the 1960 BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the era-standard suite - 85%-magnesia and amosite pipe covering, asbestos felt, chrysotile cloth/tape lagging, asbestos millboard, finishing cement, molded block. Documented disturbance periods for this hull: the Long Beach shipyard overhauls of 1952-53 (seven months) and late 1953-54 following the Korean tours. The planned CG-14 guided-missile conversion was cancelled for budgetary reasons - a yard period that never occurred and generates no disturbance inference.

- Limitations
- Class/era specification and yard-period inference only - no ship-specific asbestos record exists for this hull (ev-03); this row must not be read as establishing that asbestos products were or remain aboard. Does not quantify material; removed-material scope is undocumented.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: the class-level CourtListener exact-phrase sweep ('USS <name>' + asbestos) covering all fourteen Baltimore-class hulls on 2026-09-16 returned no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull; a fresh per-ship re-query on 2026-09-18 was blocked by API throttle (HTTP 429, 125/day shared quota) and deferred per the backoff rule rather than retried. No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping hazmat disclosure, NVR entry (hull sold 1974, before live-register coverage), or museum record with asbestos data was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it establishes only that no qualifying ship-specific documentation was found in the searched repositories. State-court and unindexed matters are outside the sweep's coverage; the fresh per-ship hull-number query remains an open deferred item. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Secondary class-table and register-derived data for this hull: laid down 1 February 1943 (New York Shipbuilding hull 449; DANFS entry omits the date); decommissioned 29 July 1960 after 11.5 years commissioned service (NavSource/Wikipedia corroborated); a planned conversion to guided-missile cruiser CG-14 was cancelled on budgetary grounds along with the similar Rochester conversion; stricken 1 October 1973; sold July 1974 to Zidell Explorations Corp., Portland, Oregon - Wikipedia gives 11 July 1974, the DANFS supplement bracket gives 22 July 1974 (conflict carried in gaps).

- Limitations
- Secondary compiled references, not primary records - used for laid-down, decommissioning, and buyer detail where DANFS is silent; the CG-14 cancellation is documented across NavSource-derived secondary sources but no primary program document was retrieved. GlobalSecurity's separate claim of a ~1957 Regulus missile fit conflicts with Navypedia's member table (which lists Regulus only for Helena, Macon, Toledo, and Los Angeles) and is treated as unverified - see gaps.
