[2]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS), 'LST-483' entry (archived NHHC capture, 2025-12-09) [nhhc_danfs]

- Archived DANFS entry, full text (three paragraphs)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS records that LST-483 was laid down 21 September 1942 at Richmond, Calif., by Kaiser, Inc.; launched 30 December 1942; and commissioned 3 May 1943. She served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in the capture and occupation of Saipan (June-July 1944), the Tinian capture and occupation (July 1944), the Leyte landings (October 1944), and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto (April 1945). She performed occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946, was decommissioned 10 February 1946, was redesignated Brewster County (LST-483) on 1 July 1955 after a county in Texas, was struck from the Navy list 11 August 1955, and was later sunk as a target. She earned four battle stars for World War II service.

- Archived official history, not a materials record. The live NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-02; this 2025-12-09 Wayback capture is labeled archived accordingly. It contains no asbestos, insulation, hazardous-material, or individual-exposure finding. DANFS gives the commissioning date as 3 May 1943; NavSource and the NARA deck-log index indicate 4 May 1943 - the conflict is carried in gaps.

- NavSource page, chronology block, campaign table, specification block, and commanding-officers table (live HTTP 200, verified 2026-10-02)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's LST-483 chronology gives commissioning on 4 May 1943 with LCDR. John D. Burton, USNR, in command; wartime assignment to LST Flotilla Three, LST Group Seven, LST Division Thirteen in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater; campaign dates for Saipan (15 June-30 July 1944), Tinian (24-30 July 1944), the Leyte landings (20 October 1944), and Okinawa Gunto (1-9 April 1945); occupation service in the Far East from 20 December 1945 to 10 February 1946; decommissioning on 10 February 1946 with transfer to Commander Naval Forces Far East (COMNAVFE) Shipping Control Authority (SCAJAP) and redesignation as Q050; laying up in the Reserve Fleet; naming as Brewster County (LST-483) on 1 July 1955; and striking from the Naval Register on 11 August 1955, with final disposition 'sunk as a target.' Its specification block identifies two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, a single Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-driven 100-kW 230-V D.C. ship's-service generators, twin propellers, 1,700 shp, and no boilers; ship's company was 13 officers and 104 enlisted, with troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted.

- Population
- Ship's company (13 officers/104 enlisted) and embarked troops (capacity 16 officers/147 enlisted)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a live naval photo archive compiling Navy-source material; it is corroborative rather than an official register. Its SCAJAP/Q050 transfer line conflicts with DANFS's statement that the ship returned to the United States before decommissioning - carried in gaps. No asbestos, insulation-composition, hazardous-material, or individual-exposure information appears on the page.

- Limitations
- This is an index to a primary-record series, not an inspection of the logs. It establishes that hull-specific logs are an archival lead and that coverage begins 4 May 1943 (consistent with NavSource's commissioning date, not DANFS's 3 May). It does not establish asbestos, repair work, material content, exposure, or that every relevant log is digitized.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for diesel-powered LST-1-class ships (bounded by the verified machinery fit for this hull - two GM 12-567A diesels, no boilers): asbestos-relevant applications of the period for the type were diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch and crane brake linings.

- Population
- Construction trades (Kaiser Richmond, 1942-43) and ship's company - era-typical populations, not individually documented
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only. No document reviewed names LST-483 or Brewster County in connection with asbestos; no ship-specific asbestos record exists in this file. Does not establish presence, quantity, condition, individual exposure, or legal eligibility for this hull.

- GAO product page, Highlights block (archived capture)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reviewed Navy asbestos use, removal cost, and worker protections, with fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. Its product-page highlights state that the Navy's 1975 policy removed and replaced with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs, and that the policy was modified in 1979 to include selective replacement of asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

- Limitations
- Navy-wide program context only; the report does not name Brewster County, LST-483, the LST-1 class, or Kaiser, Inc., and its policy window (1975-1979) postdates this hull's 1946 decommissioning and 1955 striking. It supports no ship-specific exposure conclusion. The live gao.gov product page returned HTTP 403 to automated fetches on 2026-10-02; the 2025-04-02 Wayback capture is cited and labeled archived.

[7]Batch-6989 search ledger (this record): archived NHHC DANFS; NavSource; NARA Special List 44; Naval Vessel Register; MARAD Vessel History Database; GAO HRD-80-2 (archived); authenticated CourtListener API v4 exact-name and hull-number searches [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-brewster-county-lst483-01 through sl-uss-brewster-county-lst483-12
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located. Authenticated CourtListener API v4 searches returned no opinions for the exact phrases 'USS Brewster County' and 'LST-483' and no dockets for 'USS Brewster County'; the exact phrase 'Brewster County' returned 439 opinions, the relevance-ranked top results being Texas county-government litigation - name collisions with the namesake county, not the ship. No public asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or qualifying litigation naming this hull was located in the sources searched.

- Limitations
- A negative public-record search does not prove asbestos was absent. CourtListener covers indexed opinions and docket metadata, not all state-court matters or unindexed filings; searches used exact-name and hull-number terms and results are not a merits finding. The 'Brewster County' opinion sweep is dominated by the Texas county (the ship's namesake); volume prevented exhaustive per-hit review, so collision classification is based on the relevance-ranked top results. The 'LST-483' docket-index search was refused by the fleet-wide pacer on repeated spaced retries this session and is logged as an access gap in the ledger.
