Design and disposition detail: authorized as 'Supply Ship No. 1' under the FY1914 program (Act of 4 Mar 1913); Bureau of Construction and Repair design from General Board characteristics (1913) calling for a purpose-built refrigerated fleet supply ship - two refrigerating units holding frozen-meat compartments at 15 deg F in tropical waters, chilled/ventilated provision spaces, accommodations 25 percent over complement. Boston Navy Yard underbid Newport News ($1,171,713 estimate vs $1,315,000 bid) and received the order 19 Feb 1914; keel laid 12 Jun 1915; name 'Bridge' assigned 2 May 1916. Struck 19 Jul 1946 per Shipscribe's disposition table. Documented wartime alterations: 3"/50 AA authorized 9 Apr 1917; second 3" foundation/gun added Feb and Dec 1941; forward 5"/51 pair removed and 1.1" quad added Jul-Aug 1942; remaining 5"/51s replaced by 5"/38 DP and 1.1" quad replaced by twin 40mm Dec 1944-Feb 1945. Mine damage detail: struck a mine in the Tsushima Strait 1 Nov 1945, holed in the engine room; docked at Sasebo 28 Nov 1945; USS Coasters Harbor (AG-74) assisted with temporary cofferdam patch; undocked 21 Jan 1946; inspectors declared her unseaworthy 10 Feb 1946; used as a station reefer until decommissioning 27 Jun 1946; OFLC sold her to Madrigal & Co. of Manila 22 Dec 1947.

    Finding
The Navy/PHS industrial-hygiene survey of pipe-covering operations in naval vessel construction documents that amosite asbestos was an important ingredient of pipe-covering felt and molded sectional covering used on U.S. Navy vessels, and measured airborne asbestos dust exposure for pipe coverers in two government Navy yards and two contract yards - establishing that asbestos insulation work was a routine, documented feature of Navy ship construction and repair in the era spanning this hull's active life.

Navy yard and contract-yard pipe coverers (WWII-era survey)
    Limitations
Era-level primary documentation of Navy pipe-covering practice; surveyed yards are anonymized (A, B, C, D) and no vessel is named. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this specific hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII, the era of this hull's documented 1941, 1942, and 1944-45 armament/availability refits, and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization.

    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarship; does not name this vessel and does not establish that asbestos was installed aboard this hull in original construction or refits, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. Original construction (1915-17) predates the documented WWII focus; WWI-era asbestos use is plausible era inference but is not separately sourced here.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Bridge (AF-1) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1953, predating the asbestos-litigation era and modern survey practice, which largely forecloses the documentary categories this database relies on.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1917-built steam auxiliary with WWII-era refits sits squarely in the documented era of Navy asbestos insulation use. CourtListener API search was rate-limit blocked during this session (HTTP 429, daily quota) - the litigation check is incomplete and logged as such in the ledger rather than reported as a clean negative.

    Finding
Record-group mapping for unretrieved primary material: RG 19 holds Bureau of Construction and Repair design records contemporaneous with this ship's 1913-14 plans and specifications; RG 181 (1st Naval District, Boston) holds Boston Navy Yard industrial records covering the 1915-17 construction; RG 24 holds ship deck logs (1917-1946). These are the most likely repositories for any hull-specific insulation/materials documentation.
