- Revised DANFS record for this hull: laid down 30 December 1942 at the Charleston (S.C.) Navy Yard; launched 29 May 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Samuel W. Bryant; commissioned 4 December 1943, Comdr. Paul L. High. Bermuda shakedown; Charleston post-shakedown availability (28 Feb 1944); Boston Navy Yard ~13 March; Pacific transit with McNair (DD-679) escorting Wasp (CV-18); Pearl Harbor 3 April and a yard availability (April-May) repairing reduction-gear and fireroom-hull leaks. Operations: Saipan landings 15 June 1944 and Saipan-Tinian radar picket to 2 August; Palaus/Peleliu screen and Ulithi occupation (September); Leyte and Surigao Strait 24-25 October (torpedo attack with Halford DD-480 and Robinson DD-562, five torpedoes, no hits); Mindoro resupply convoy 19-22 December (22 December Zeke kamikaze overshot the No. 2 stack and splashed 50 yards off the bridge - fragment damage, one wounded); Lingayen Gulf January 1945; Iwo Jima February-9 March; Okinawa from 21 March. On 16 April 1945, while going to the aid of the stricken Laffey (DD-724) during the third kikusui attack, a burning Zeke crashed below the bridge near the main radio room and its bomb exploded - 34 dead, 33 wounded; temporary repairs Kerama Retto. San Francisco 28 May; overhaul at United Engineering Co., Ltd., Alameda (May-September 1945); San Diego 27 September; in commission in reserve 9 July 1946; decommissioned 15 January 1947; Pacific Reserve Fleet nearly 30 years; stricken 30 June 1968; sold April 1976 to 'Lucia Brothers' [Luria Brothers] for scrapping. Seven battle stars.

- Charleston Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design complement 273, wartime 329); United Engineering repair workers 1945
- Limitations
- DANFS documents construction, service, battle damage, and disposition - not materials or asbestos content. Disposition (sold for scrapping April 1976) conflicts with NavSource/shipbuildinghistory ('sunk as target off California 24 Aug 1969'); revised DANFS carried as the more authoritative account, conflict logged in gaps. The older DANFS transcription dates the kamikaze hit 13 April with 28 killed/8 missing/33 wounded; the revised entry's 16 April/34 dead is consistent with Laffey's documented attack date and is carried.

- Finding
- Verbatim SecNav Navy Unit Commendation citation for this hull: 'For outstanding heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Saipan-Tinian operations, June 12 to August 2, 1944; Palau, September 6 to 29, 1944; the Battle of Surigao Strait, October 24-25, 1944; Iwo Jima, February 14 to March 9, 1945; and Okinawa, March 21 to April 18, 1945... As Flagship of Destroyer Division ONE HUNDRED TWELVE, at Iwo Jima... Subjected to a coordinated torpedo attack by six enemy suicide planes while on radar picket duty at Okinawa, she promptly downed three of these planes and succeeded in damaging a fourth before it crashed and exploded on deck... continued on her mission to aid the stricken LAFFEY.' Confirms the NUC award (asserted by the older DANFS, omitted by the revised entry), the DesDiv 112 flagship role, and the Laffey-assistance context of the kamikaze hit.

- Transcription of an official citation on a private historical site (Destroyer History Foundation) - treated as a facsimile of the award document; content is consistent with the revised DANFS narrative. Documents combat damage and roles, not materials aboard. Citation describes 'torpedo attack' loosely for a coordinated air/suicide attack; no asbestos content.

- NavSource photo-history compilation for this hull: laid down 30 December 1942 by Charleston Navy Yard (photographed at Charleston, S.C., January and March 1944); launched 29 May 1943; commissioned 4 December 1943; decommissioned 15 January 1947; stricken 30 June 1968. Machinery block: 'Allis Chalmers Turbines', 60,000 SHP, 2 screws, 38 knots, crew 273. Carries 'Fate: Sunk as target off California August 24 1969' - which conflicts with the revised DANFS ('sold in April 1976 to Lucia [Luria] Brothers for scrapping', corroborated by the UB88 Fletcher identification table entry '665 Bryant Sold to Luria Bros. 4/76').

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation, not a primary source. Carried for building data, the Allis Chalmers turbine attribution (a member-level variation from the class-standard GE fit - unresolved), and to document the fate conflict. Its 'sunk as target' fate is NOT adopted: revised DANFS plus the UB88 table are the stronger accounts; the conflict is in gaps. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 with a four-boiler, 60,000-shp geared-steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler and steam-line lagging, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder Charleston Navy Yard (S.C.) is a U.S. Navy yard tracked in the Atlas yard dataset ('charleston-naval-shipyard'). Documented yard events aboard this hull (Pearl Harbor availability April-May 1944 repairing reduction-gear/fireroom-hull leaks; battle-damage overhaul at United Engineering Co., Alameda, May-September 1945) are the kinds of work at which era insulation was disturbed or renewed, but no hull-level material record was located.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a ship-specific finding; no insulation schedule, work package, or material inventory for DD-665 was located. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure. NavSource's Allis Chalmers turbine attribution does not change the era-standard insulation inference.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing DD-665's construction (1942-43), wartime service (1943-45), and repair availabilities entirely inside the documented asbestos-use era.

- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located on CourtListener. Exact-name '"USS Bryant"' opinions returned zero results; exact-name dockets returned one hit - Bryant v. U.S. Steel Corp., No. 2:09-cv-00415 (N.D. Ala.), a race-discrimination employment case (42:2000 Job Discrimination), a name collision not involving the vessel or asbestos. Hull-number '"DD-665"' opinions returned one hit - Tenaris Bay City, Inc. v. United States, 698 F. Supp. 3d 1287 (Ct. Intl. Trade 2024), a customs/trade case where 'DD-665' is a tariff-entry artifact, a name collision.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-665: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, materials inventory, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos litigation naming this hull in the sources searched. The hull was scrapped in 1976 (revised DANFS), pre-dating routine hull ACM documentation, and has no museum/preservation phase that would generate present-day surveys.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level and this hull sat squarely inside the Navy's asbestos-use era. NARA RG 19 General Information Books (per-vessel material specs) remain an unretrieved archival lead.
