- Documented for this hull number: 'PGM-50 was built for Denmark' - PGM-47 Class Motor Gunboat / Daphne Class Seaward Defense Craft; laid down 1 September 1962 as PGM-50 at Naval Dock Yard Holmen, Copenhagen, Denmark, under the Danish-American Cost Sharing Program; launched 29 May 1963; commissioned Neptun (P 536) 18 December 1963; decommissioned 30 October 1989; 'Struck from the Naval Register in 1992. Fate unknown.' Call sign Oscar-Victor-Charlie-Sierra (OVCS). Specifications given: displacement 195.4 t; length 121.3 ft; beam 22.1 ft; draft 7 ft; speed 22.33 kts (6.58 kts on Foden diesel and one shaft); complement 23; armament one Mk 48 40 mm mount, two 7.62 mm machine guns, two depth charge projectors, two depth charge launchers, six side releasing mines, one 51 mm rocket launcher (removed 1986/1987, replaced by one 20 mm mount); propulsion 'Two 900hp Maybach MD655/18 diesel engines, two shafts' with one 115 hp FD6 Foden diesel and one shaft added after 1970 for cruising. Page states 'There is no DANFS history available for PGM-50.'

- Finding
- Contemporary official-class documentation for this hull: the 1982 fleet book table lists 'NEPTUN P 536, køllagt 1. sep. 1962, søsat 29. maj 1963, indgået i Flådens tal 18. dec. 1963'. Class remarks (verbatim): 'Bevogtningsfartøjerne af DAPHNE-klassen er udviklet på grundlag af en britisk Seaward Defence Craft (SDC) og blev konstrueret til bevogtningsopgaver i indre danske farvande i nært samarbejde med marinedistrikterne, som erstatning for NÆS-klassen' (developed on the basis of a British Seaward Defence Craft and designed for patrol duties in inner Danish waters in close cooperation with the naval districts, as replacement for the Næs class); 'blev alle bygget på Orlogsværftet og financieret over det i begyndelsen af 1960'erne mellem Danmark og USA indgåede Cost-Sharing program. Af klassens oprindelige 9 enheder blev DAPHNE, NAJADEN, NEPTUN og HAVMANDEN ... finansieret af USA, medens de øvrige blev finansieret i Danmark' (all built at Orlogsværftet and financed via the early-1960s Danish-US Cost Sharing program; DAPHNE, NAJADEN, NEPTUN and HAVMANDEN financed by the USA, the rest by Denmark). Also documented: in 1970 the Frigate Squadron recommended removing the mid-engine fitted for slow patrolling; the August 1981 defence agreement life-extended the eight remaining units instead of replacing them; class units served in the 2nd School Ship Division as cadet training ships; NEPTUN is not among the four units adopted by municipalities (Havfruen/Struer, Najaden/Skive, Nymfen/Skelskør, Ran/Fredericia).

- Limitations
- Contemporary Danish Navy fleet description serial (officer-authored, published in the service journal Tidsskrift for Søvæsen) - the strongest source fetched, but it is a fleet-list genre, not a construction record. Its simplified class data block (180 tons, 2.6 m draught, 20 knots, '2 stk. Maybach dieselmotorer, hver ydende 18 HK' - OCR-garbled, presumably 1,800 hk) conflicts with the detailed Danish data-sheet figures carried elsewhere (195.4 t, 2.09 m, 22.33 kn). The 1970 mid-engine note conflicts with later compilations on the Foden configuration (see gaps). No asbestos or material content. The build table maps 'PGM 50, Neptun, Danish Navy, Royal Danish DY, Copenhagen, Denmark, 170 LDT, 121 LOA, built 18-Dec-63, disposition P 536, struck 1992' - confirming PGM-50 = Neptun (P 536), built at the Royal Danish Dockyard (Orlogsværftet), with the delivery/commissioning date matching the Danish sources. The same table maps PGM-47 to Daphne (P 530), PGM-48 to Havmanden (P 532), PGM-49 to Najaden (P 534) - the four US-cost-shared hulls.

A Danish naval craft built 1962-63 predates the insulation ban entirely. The guidance explicitly covers 'skibe under værftsarbejde' (ships during yard work) and requires Arbejdstilsynet notification plus certificated training for interior asbestos demolition in ships - the regulatory regime any post-1989 Danish disposal of this hull would have fallen under.

- A small diesel-powered patrol craft built 1962-63 at the Royal Danish Navy's own dockyard sits inside the era when asbestos was legal and standard for marine thermal, acoustic and fire insulation in Denmark - the national insulation ban did not arrive until 1972 and the near-total ban until 1980, and the navy itself later acknowledged operating asbestos-insulated ships. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and at 37 m with a crew of 23 the machinery volume at risk is small.

- CORRECTION: The batch-list vessel name 'USS built in Denmark as (PGM-50)' is a data artifact: it is the NavSource index phrasing ('PGM-50 built in Denmark as ...') mis-parsed as a ship name with a USS prefix. The hull was never a USS and never served the U.S. Navy - PGM-50 was a U.S. accounting hull number under the Danish-American Cost Sharing Program for a ship designed by Orlogsværftet's construction office, built at the Royal Dock Yard Holmen, and operated by the Royal Danish Navy as NEPTUN (P 536). Three independent compilations (NavSource, NavalCoverMuseum, shipbuildinghistory) map PGM-50 to Neptun P 536 identically; the contemporary Danish fleet book and the Danish reference independently document the ship, the cost-sharing program, and the US funding of this specific hull.

- Limitations
- Corrects an identification artifact, not a material claim. The 'USS' mislabeling originates upstream of this batch (the source list); this record uses the mandated slug/file name anyway so queue bookkeeping stays consistent. The PGM-to-pennant mapping is itself interesting: PGM-47..50 map to P 530, P 532, P 534, P 536 - the four US-paid hulls, not a sequential pennant series. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Class service context and a monograph lead: the nine Daphne-class craft were built at Orlogsværftet 1960-64 under the American arms-aid Cost Sharing program in which Denmark and the USA each paid half; inspired by the British Ford-class SDCs and called 'SDC'erne' in daily speech; known as lively ships in storms; left the fleet around 1990 after years as the navy's workhorses for surveillance of Danish waters alongside the cutters; their tasks were taken over by the Flyvefisken class (Standard Flex) and Naval Home Guard units. The reviewed Wismann monograph is the dedicated class history - the natural next source for ship-specific service detail.

- Class-level secondary review of a specialized monograph - the monograph itself was not fetched (print publication); the review's facts are class-level. 'Each paid half' is a program-level summary consistent with the four-hull US-funding detail in ev-02/ev-05. No asbestos content.
