- NavSource documents this hull: 'MSI-4 was built in The Netherlands' - Van Straelen Class Inshore Minesweeper; laid down 29 August 1958 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program by De Vries Lentsch, Holland; launched 27 February 1960; commissioned Bussemaker (M 869), 19 September 1960; decommissioned 4 February 1982; struck from the Naval Register 17 October 1986; sold 26 November 1986 to Delft Geophysical of the Persian Gulf; fate unknown. Call sign PAMJ. Specs: displacement 171 t.; length 108.2'; beam 21'8"; draft 5.9'; speed 13 kts.; complement 13; one 20mm mount; two 500hp Stork Werkspoor diesel engines, two shafts. Page states 'There is no DANFS history currently available for MSI-4.'

- Limitations
- Enthusiast-maintained photo archive (secondary compilation, widely used for US hull data) - milestone dates conflict with the Dutch naval-history record (laid down 29 vs 28 Aug 1958; commissioned 19 Sep vs 19 Aug 1960; decommissioned 4 Feb 1982 vs removed from strength 1 Jan 1984) and internally with its own commissioning photo caption dated 10 September 1960. 'Naval Register' is unspecified - the hull was never USN-commissioned, so the struck date likely reflects the Dutch register. Contains no asbestos information.

- Locator
- Inshore Minesweeper (MSI) index section, lines MSI-1 through MSI-10
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The NavSource MSI index maps U.S. hull numbers to recipient-navy identities: 'MSI-4 built in The Netherlands as Bussemaker (M 869)'. The same index shows MSI-1 and MSI-2 as the only U.S.-commissioned hulls (Cove, Cape) and MSI-3 through MSI-10 all 'built in The Netherlands' - the eight MDAP-funded hulls of the Van Straelen class (Ablas M 868 through Van Well Groenenveld M 875). This resolves the source-list entry 'USS built in The Netherlands as (MSI-4)' to Hr.Ms. Bussemaker (M 869).

- Finding
- Dutch per-ship record: builder G. de Vries Lentsch Jr., Amsterdam; laid down 28 August 1958; launched 27 February 1960; taken into service 19 August 1960; pennant M 869. 'Het schip werd voor Amerikaanse rekening gebouwd' (the ship was built for U.S. account). 'Op 1 januari 1984 uit de sterkte afgevoerd' (removed from strength 1 January 1984) and sold 26 November 1986 to Delft Geophysical. Namesake: LTZ1 A.J. Bussemaker, commander of submarine Hr.Ms. O 16, posthumously Ridder 4e klasse Militaire Willemsorde for torpedoing four Japanese troop transports totaling 40,000 tons on 12 December 1941; on return O 16 struck a mine, broke in two and sank within a minute with one survivor.

- Finding
- Class record: sixteen inshore minesweepers designed by engineer H.J. Wimmers of the Ministry of Defence (Navy); built of non-magnetic materials as far as possible ('a-magnetic' requirement for sweeping magnetic mines in shallow waters). Eight were built on Dutch yards for U.S. account under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program and transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy; the other eight were built for Dutch account. All sixteen were named by Royal Decree after officers, NCOs, and ratings posthumously decorated with the Militaire Willemsorde or the Bronzen Leeuw. Specs: 33.08 x 6.87 x 1.80 m; 171.3 t; 2 Werkspoor diesel engines, 1,100 hp, 2 shafts; 13 knots; 14 crew; one 20mm machine gun.

- Locator
- Van Straelen-klasse history page (squadron basing, 1968 reorganization, design notes)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Foundation record for the class: the inshore minesweepers of the Van Straelen class were assigned to mijnenbestrijdingssquadron 205 based at Hellevoetsluis; in the 1968 reorganization of the Dutch mine service the Marinekazerne Hellevoetsluis was taken out of service 29 February 1968, the mothballed sweepers moved to Den Helder, and the operational units were split between mijnenbestrijdingsgroep 1 (Den Helder) and groep 3 (Vlissingen), with inshore sweepers alternating between the two. The class used high-grade materials throughout to produce nearly a-magnetic and quiet ships for sweeping magnetic and acoustic mines in shallow water. Sister ship Hr.Ms. Mahu (M 880) is preserved afloat in original condition by the foundation.

- Limitations
- Preservation foundation's class-history page - class-level context; squadron assignment and the 1968 reorganization are not documented per-hull here, so Bussemaker's individual station assignments are not established. The page's framing that the inshore sweepers were built 'voor Amerikaanse rekening' is loose class language - per-ship MDAP funding applies to MSI-3 through MSI-10 only (see ev-02). No asbestos information.

- ILT asbestos supervision page, introductory text and inspection/inventory-obligation sections
- Finding type
- regulatory
- Finding
- Dutch government regulator guidance: 'Heeft u een industriele installatie, buisleiding, schip of trein die voor 1994 is gebouwd of geinstalleerd? Dan kan daar asbest in zitten' - ships built or installed before 1994 can contain asbestos, and an asbestos inventory by a certified firm is required before demolition, removal, or maintenance of pre-1994 ships. The regulator adds that for seagoing ships the 1994 threshold is not definitive because foreign repairs may have installed asbestos parts later. This hull (laid down 1958, launched 1960) falls inside the pre-1994 window the regulator treats as presumptively suspect.

- Finding
- Dutch sector documentation: asbestos was used on a large scale in shipbuilding and ship repair ('In de scheepsbouw is geruime tijd op grote schaal asbest gebruikt') until the mid-1970s; machine fitters, ship's ironworkers, shipwrights, and welders are the trades with the most verified asbestos-exposure declarations; in ships the 'asbestmatras' (asbestos cloth mattress filled with loose asbestos) was used as insulation. The institute's Netherlands history page states sprayed asbestos was much used in 1955-1965 for insulating ships and installations, and places the 'golden years' of Dutch asbestos product use at 1955-1978 - a window covering this hull's 1958-1960 construction and 1960-1984 service.

- Sector-level documentation for Dutch shipbuilding as a whole - does not name this vessel, the Van Straelen class, or the De Vries Lentsch yard. Establishes that asbestos use was common in the era and industry; does not establish that asbestos was present aboard this hull. A small diesel-driven non-magnetic sweeper would have had materially different outfit than steam-driven tonnage.

- Minesweepers Inshore (MSI) table, rows MSI 1-10
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Independent shipbuilding reference documents the MSI program: in the late 1950s the Navy initiated a third postwar minesweeper program for Inshore Minesweepers (MSI), light displacement ~120 tons, 112 ft; in total 55 were built, all but the first two for allied navies, and only the first eight were built in U.S. yards - the remainder were built by yards in the recipient countries. The table groups 'MSI 3-10 ... Netherlands', consistent with the eight MDAP hulls built on Dutch yards.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1958-60 Dutch naval build falls inside the era both the Dutch regulator and sector documentation treat as presumptively asbestos-containing. The hull's post-1986 disposition is undocumented, so any demolition-phase inventory (which Dutch regulation would have required for a pre-1994 ship broken up in the Netherlands) is not locatable from public sources. Litigation status is open, not negative.
