Documented for this hull: 'MSI-5 was built in The Netherlands' - Van Straelen Class Inshore Minesweeper; laid down 27 April 1959 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program by 'De Vries Lentsch, Holland' [builder attribution contradicted by official Dutch sources - see correction row ev-12]; launched 6 February 1960; commissioned HNLMS Lacomblé (M 870), 19 September 1960; decommissioned 19 July 1982; transferred to the Sea Cadets 31 August 1984 at Amsterdam, Holland; fate unknown. Call sign PAMK (Papa-Alpha-Mike-Kilo). Specifications: displacement 171 t.; length 108.2'; beam 21'8"; draft 5.9'; speed 13 kts; complement 13; armament one 20mm mount; propulsion two 500hp Stork Werkspoor diesel engines, two shafts. Photo captions document the namesake officer, the launching, reserve lay-up at Den Helder with other minesweepers, and her later role as 'Sea Scout ship' at Den Helder. Page states 'There is no DANFS history currently available for MSI-5.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry. Its builder attribution (De Vries Lentsch) is contradicted by the NIMH launch-photo caption and Dutch class data, which place construction at Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Arnhem; its commissioning date (19 Sep 1960) conflicts with Dutch sources (22 Aug 1960); 'transferred to the Sea Cadets' is the Korps Zeekadetten (Sea Cadet Corps), and 'fate unknown' is outdated - the vessel survives at Veere per December 2025 official MOD publications (ev-03, ev-04). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
The NavSource MSI index maps USN hull-classification numbers MSI-3 through MSI-10 onto the eight MDAP-funded Van Straelen-class hulls M868 through M875 built in the Netherlands: MSI-3 'built in The Netherlands as Ablas (M 868)' [sic for Alblas], MSI-4 Bussemaker (M 869), MSI-5 'built in The Netherlands as Lacomblé (M 870)' (link to 11/055.htm), MSI-6 Van Hamel (M 871), MSI-7 Van Straelen (M 872), MSI-8 Van Moppes (M 873), MSI-9 Chömpff (M 874), MSI-10 Van Well Groenenveld (M 875). The index cell text 'built in The Netherlands as ...' - not a ship name - is what the master hull list ingested as this record's name field.

    Finding
Official Dutch MOD documentation of this hull: one of sixteen inshore minesweepers (internationally 'mine sweeper inshore, MSI'; 'Dinky Toy class' in Dutch service) built in the 1960s at three yards - De Noord (Alblasserdam), the Arnhemse Scheepswerf, and G. de Vries Lentsch jr. (Amsterdam); 'Nederland en de Verenigde Staten hebben ieder acht schepen voor hun rekening genomen' (the Netherlands and the United States each paid for eight ships - the US share under MDAP); class served the Royal Netherlands Navy until 1984. NIMH photo caption documents this hull's launch 'bij de Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, op 6 februari 1960' (at the Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, 6 February 1960). Named for KLTZ E.E.B. (Eugène) Lacomblé, commander of cruiser Hr.Ms. De Ruyter, which 'strijdend ten onder' (went down fighting) 27 February 1942 in the Battle of the Java Sea; posthumously appointed Ridder 4e klasse, Militaire Willems-Orde. Ship's company thirteen: two officers, three petty officers, eight ratings. Single 20mm machine gun; collapsible mast for inland bridge clearance; engines air-bag mounted ('luchtbanden') because diesel vibration/noise interfered with magnetic-acoustic sweeping ('de enige schepen in de zeevaarthistorie die soms niet konden uitvaren door een lekke band'); ~2,000 L fresh water; galley and crew head on deck. In 1980 LTZ2 Huibert van Eijsden commanded her ('het schip was inmiddels twintig jaar in de vaart'); she took part in Binnenlandse Vlagvertoon recruitment cruises through inland waterways (Van Starkenborgkanaal, IJsselmeer, Ketelmeer; Groningen, Lemmer, Meppel, Urk). Documents the vessel as 'een van de weinige overgebleven schepen van die klasse' - one of the few surviving class units - in the harbor at Veere on loan to the Korps Zeekadetten, after ~40 years with the Sea Cadets at Den Helder; heavily vandalized immediately before publication (see ev-04).

    Finding
Official MOD documentation of this hull's present state: the former naval ship Hr.Ms. Lacomblé was heavily damaged by vandalism in the harbor of Veere (reported via Omroep Zeeland); the inshore minesweeper 'ging in 1984 tegen de kant' (was paid off in 1984) and 'werd in 2022 in bruikleen gegeven aan het Korps Zeekadetten in Veere' (was given on loan to the Sea Cadet Corps at Veere in 2022), where she serves as an opleidingsschip (training ship). Bridge and chart room particularly hard hit; damage in the many thousands of euros; volunteer cleanup underway and a crowdfunding campaign had raised approximately EUR 10,000 at publication.

Commanded minelayer Hr.Ms. Douwe Aukes 1935-38, then cruiser Hr.Ms. De Ruyter - flagship of RADM Karel Doorman's Combined Striking Force - which was hit by a Type 93 torpedo from IJN Haguro late on 27 February 1942 in the Battle of the Java Sea and sank about 02:30 on 28 February with 367 men, including Doorman and Lacomblé; posthumously made Knight 4th class, Military Order of William (28 May 1949). The ship's badge - a double-headed eagle derived from the municipal arms of Arnhem (the namesake's birthplace) with motto 'DIE VLAG VERLATEN, NOOIT' (Abandon that Flag, Never) - was approved 9 October 1969. All sixteen class units were named for RNLN personnel decorated posthumously in WWII/the Indonesian War of Independence.

    Finding
A diesel-powered wooden-hulled inshore minesweeper built 1959-1960 at a Dutch naval yard sits inside the documented Dutch shipbuilding asbestos era - Dutch shipbuilding used asbestos on a large scale until the mid-1970s, and sprayed asbestos for ship and installation insulation was widely applied in the Netherlands in 1955-1965, covering this build. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and asbestos-paper-backed vinyl floor covering (vloerzeil, a major Dutch-era application). Non-magnetic minesweeper construction (wood/plywood hull, minimal steel) and the absence of a steam plant bound the plausible application set - no boiler or steam-line lagging pathway applies. The hull survives and has been under volunteer restoration since ~2025 - an undocumented material-disturbance context.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, refit spec, or hazmat record located for M 870. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. The vessel's small size (151-171 t), wooden construction, and diesel plant argue for a materially smaller asbestos footprint than a steam combatant of the era; absence of ship-specific documentation means presence is neither established nor disproven. The ongoing restoration and December 2025 vandalism would disturb any era materials present - no survey or hazmat handling record was located.

Official-sector documentation of the era and sector this hull was built in: the IAS records that in Dutch shipbuilding asbestos was used on a large scale for a considerable time ('In de scheepsbouw is geruime tijd op grote schaal asbest gebruikt'), that asbestos mattresses (asbestos cloth filled with loose asbestos) were used on a limited scale as insulation aboard ships, that shipbuilding and repair workers were directly or indirectly exposed during ship fitting-out and in yard workshops, and that this continued until the mid-1970s ('Dit heeft geduurd tot halverwege de jaren zeventig'); ship repair and breaking exposure persists to the present day. Highest documented-exposure trades: machine erectors (machinebankwerkers), ship's ironworkers, shipwrights (scheepstimmerlieden), and welders - the trades that built this hull.

A Dutch court accepted as established that in the early 1960s it was customary for ships to contain asbestos materials, including for insulating pipes: 'In het begin van de jaren zestig was het gebruikelijk dat op schepen asbesthoudend materiaal werd gebruikt, onder meer voor het isoleren van leidingen' - a judicial finding covering the era and country of this hull's construction (1959-60) and service. Disposition note: the case was a mesothelioma claim by a former VNS employee (service February 1962 - June 1963 aboard merchant vessels Abbekerk and Ivoorkust); the court applied the limitation period - the claim was time-barred - so the customary-use statement is an accepted background finding, not a damages award.

CORRECTION (identity): the master-list name 'USS built in The Netherlands as' is not a ship name - it is the truncated NavSource index-cell note 'MSI-5 built in The Netherlands as Lacomblé (M 870)' ingested as a name field. The vessel's actual commissioned identity is Hr.Ms. (HNLMS) Lacomblé, pennant M 870, Royal Netherlands Navy. She was never commissioned into the US Navy and never carried 'USS': MSI-5 is the USN hull-classification number assigned to the MDAP-funded hull for accounting/indexing, one of eight (MSI-3 through MSI-10 = M868-M875) the United States paid for; the other eight of the sixteen-ship class (M876-M883) were Dutch-funded and carry no MSI number. Secondary corrections to NavSource's vessel page: (a) builder - NavSource prints 'De Vries Lentsch, Holland', but the NIMH launch-photo caption and Dutch class data place construction at the Arnhem yard, documented as Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NIMH caption, en.wiki class table) / Arnhemsche Stoomsleephelling Maatschappij (nl.wiki citing the yard build list) - the same company, founded 1889 under the latter name and later renamed (Gelders Archief ASM weblog); (b) commissioning date - NavSource prints 19 September 1960, Dutch sources 22 August 1960; (c) 'fate unknown' is outdated - the hull survives as a Korps Zeekadetten training ship at Veere (Defensie.nl, December 2025).

    Limitations
Corrects a cataloging artifact plus two secondary-source errors, not a material claim. The 'USS MSI-5' framing survives in US-side indexes and the verification list; the authoritative operator is the Royal Netherlands Navy (later the Korps Zeekadetten on government loan). No asbestos content.
