- Finding
- Documented for this hull: launched 16 July 1944 by Electric Boat Co., Groton (sponsor Mrs. Howard P. Doyle); commissioned 4 December 1944, Cmdr. W. T. Griffith. Two war patrols 21 March-August 1945 in the Java and South China Seas and Gulf of Siam: the first largely lifeguard duty with two bombardments of Pratas Island; the second sank four small enemy vessels totaling 1,800 tons and damaged three. Departed Fremantle at the end of July 1945 for a third patrol in the Java Sea; her 6 August report passing Lombak Strait was the last word received. Other US and British submarines could not contact her; presumed sunk during Japanese antisubmarine attacks in the area between 6 and 15 August. Two battle stars.

- Limitations
- NavSource is an authoritative non-government archive; data captured via search-result text (navsource.net unreachable by direct fetch - DNS resolution failure). Crew-lost count (84) is a memorial figure distinct from the spec-block complement - carried in gaps. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Balao-class diesel-electric boats carried NO boilers or steam plant (BuShips 1945: DERD drive, four main diesel-generator engines - diesel maker Fairbanks-Morse or General Motors varying by hull block, electric motors Elliott or General Electric, ~5,400 hp, two shafts). Era-typical asbestos-relevant applications on the type: diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic and thermal hull insulation, insulation around galley and refrigeration equipment, and battery/electrical materials. The Electric Boat/Groton yard's asbestos product use in submarine construction of this era is independently documented at the yard level.
