    Finding
Documented for this hull: launched 6 August 1944 by Electric Boat Co., Groton (sponsor Mrs. Joseph W. Williams Jr., wife of the prospective commanding officer); commissioned 9 December 1944, Cmdr. J. W. Williams Jr. Two war patrols 22 April-15 August 1945 in the Java and South China Seas and Gulf of Siam; sank a 1,189-ton tanker, destroyed another small tanker at anchor, and sank four miscellaneous small craft by gunfire. Postwar: Philippine Sea Frontier to February 1946; California repairs; Pearl Harbor operations to December 1946; simulated war patrol December 1946-March 1947 (Truk, Subic Bay, Yokosuka, Midway; six weeks with Northern Training Group at Tsingtao and in the Yellow Sea); California yard overhaul January-June 1948; second simulated war patrol to September 1949; returned to the US February 1950 and transited the Panama Canal. Decommissioned (DANFS reads '16 September 1930' - an apparent typo for 1950) and transferred to Turkey 16 November 1950. One battle star.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404; verbatim transcription used.

    Limitations
NavSource is an authoritative non-government archive; data captured via search-result text (navsource.net unreachable by direct fetch - DNS resolution failure). Turkish end-of-service and disposal details uncertain - carried in gaps. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Balao-class diesel-electric boats carried NO boilers or steam plant (BuShips 1945: DERD drive, four main diesel-generator engines - diesel maker Fairbanks-Morse or General Motors varying by hull block, electric motors Elliott or General Electric, ~5,400 hp, two shafts). Era-typical asbestos-relevant applications on the type: diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic and thermal hull insulation, insulation around galley and refrigeration equipment, and battery/electrical materials. The Electric Boat/Groton yard's asbestos product use in submarine construction of this era is independently documented at the yard level.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated case naming USS Bumper (SS-333) was found. CourtListener sweeps pending (rate-limited in this window - see search_ledger). Her transfer to Turkey (1950) and foreign disposal leave no US abatement documentation chain.
