  1. [1]DANFS, Burrfish (SS-312) - construction, six war patrols, radar-picket conversion (ibiblio HyperWar verbatim transcription) [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Documented for this hull: laid down 24 February 1943 at Portsmouth Navy Yard; launched 18 June 1943; commissioned 14 September 1943, Lt. Cmdr. W. K. Perkins. Six war patrols 2 February 1944-13 May 1945; credited with sinking a 5,894-ton tanker. Converted to radar-picket submarine and redesignated SSR-312; further modernization overhaul; decommissioned 17 December 1956 and laid up in reserve. The DANFS mirror text contains OCR/transcription defects ('launched 18 June 1043', corrupted fleet and patrol-date strings) that were not carried into the record.

PNSY construction trades (1943); crew (1943-1956); SSR conversion yard personnel
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Live NHHC page 404s; ibiblio transcription used and carries visible OCR defects - dates verified against Canada.ca and NavSource where the mirror text is corrupted.

  2. [2]Government of Canada / Royal Canadian Navy, HMCS Grilse ship history (ex-USS Burrfish) [other_primary]
    Locator
Canada.ca, 'HMCS Grilse' ship history page
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Canada.ca documents this hull's Canadian service: the former USS Burrfish was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy and commissioned as HMCS Grilse on 11 May 1961; she served as an antisubmarine training and fleet-exercise submarine on the Pacific coast; the RCN paid her off on 2 October 1969 and she was returned to the U.S. Navy; she was destroyed by a Mk 46 torpedo during training off San Clemente Island on 19 November 1969. Canadian-era complement listed as 79.

    Population
RCN crew and Esquimalt dockyard personnel (1961-1969)
    Limitations
Official Canadian government history; no asbestos or material content. NavSource records the U.S. Navy strike as 19 July 1969 - before the RCN payoff - a discrepancy carried in gaps.

    Locator
    class-f/balao-class.class.json (house class profile)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Balao-class context: diesel-electric fleet submarines with no boilers or steam plant; era-consistent asbestos pathways for the class include diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration materials, and battery/electrical materials. Construction (1943, Portsmouth Navy Yard), the SSR conversion, and the 1961 RCN reactivation refit all fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era.

    Population
Balao-class construction and maintenance trades; RCN dockyard trades (era context)
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - does not name this hull and does not establish that any particular asbestos-containing material was installed aboard SS-312 or retained through the Canadian transfer. Hull destroyed 1969; no survey possible.

    Locator
GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - covering Burrfish's construction (1943), SSR conversion, and U.S. availabilities; the RCN's Esquimalt dockyard work on HMCS Grilse falls in the same era.

Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
    Limitations
Program-level documentation for the U.S. Navy only; RCN dockyard practice is era-analogous but outside GAO's scope. Supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403) - content via product-page description.

  5. [5]CourtListener API v4 (2026-09-18): sweeps for "USS Burrfish" / "Burrfish" and "SS-312" could not be executed - anonymous quota exhausted (HTTP 429) [court_record]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-burrfish-ss312-04 through sl-uss-burrfish-ss312-06
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CourtListener litigation sweep NOT COMPLETED for this hull: the shared anonymous API quota (125 requests/day) was exhausted before this vessel's queries ran; every request returned HTTP 429 ('Expected available in ~69,771 seconds' at last check). No qualifying asbestos litigation was located in the other sources searched, but CourtListener coverage is absent rather than negative for this hull.

    Limitations
CourtListener gap is an absence of coverage, not a negative finding - no docket data of any kind was retrieved for this hull. State-court and non-digitized records are also uncovered. Sweep should be re-run under an authenticated API token in a future pass.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record (survey, abatement contract, industrial-hygiene report, or docketed case) naming this hull was found in the public sources searched; CourtListener coverage was unavailable due to quota exhaustion (see search_ledger).

    Limitations
Does not establish absence of asbestos aboard - only absence of located public documentation. Canadian-service-era material records (1961-69) were not located in public sources at all. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
