DANFS Calypso (III) entry, hazegray transcription at /danfs/auxil/ag35.htm. Transcription's data line reads 'AG-36: dp. 357 l 165' b. 25'3" dr. 13'2" s. 16 k. cl Potomac' - the AG-36 header is a transcription artifact on an AG-35 entry; displacement/draft figures conflict with USCG cutter-file values (see correction row).

    Finding
DANFS records the third Calypso (AG-35) launched 6 January 1932 for the Coast Guard by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine; transferred from the Coast Guard to the Navy 17 May 1941 and commissioned the same day, Chief Boatswain J. H. Keevers in command. Based at Washington Navy Yard as tender to her sister ship, the presidential yacht Potomac (AG-25), she operated mainly on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay until 22 July 1941, when she sailed on a cruise to Nova Scotia; President Franklin D. Roosevelt was aboard for a portion of that cruise, bound for the Atlantic Conference at Argentia Bay, Newfoundland. She returned to Washington 23 August 1941 and was decommissioned 20 January 1942 and returned to the Coast Guard.

    Limitations
Authoritative for Navy-side identity, dates, and presidential-tender service. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition information; supports no asbestos claim. Launch date (6 Jan 1932) conflicts with USCG Historian's 1 Jan 1932 - logged, not resolved. Does not establish individual exposure or any materials condition aboard.

USCG Historian's Office cutter file: built by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine ($258,000); launched 1 January 1932; commissioned into USCG 16 January 1932. Homeported Stapleton, NY (Special Patrol Force); transferred to San Diego 2 February 1934; Bering Sea Patrol April-September 1935; Baltimore from 10 September 1937. Transferred to the Navy 17 May 1941 as escort for presidential yacht Potomac at Washington Navy Yard; returned and recommissioned as USCG cutter 20 January 1942, rearmed with added ASW/AA weapons and sonar for Atlantic Fleet convoy escort. Rescued 42 survivors of SS Buarque (15 Feb 1942), 54 of SS Arabutan (8 Mar 1942), 13 of SS Pipestone County (7 May 1942), and 60 of USS Plymouth (PG-57) (5 Aug 1943). Reported to Norfolk for the new Air-Sea Rescue Service June 1944. Sold 2 November 1955 to A.T. Davies of Birchfield Boiler, Inc., Tacoma, WA for $15,564. Specs: 337 tons full load (1933; 350 in 1945); 165' oa x 25'3" x 7'8"-10'; two Winton Model 158 diesels, 1,340 bhp; 16 knots.

    Limitations
Authoritative USCG history and specifications. Internally inconsistent on final decommissioning - data block says 18 July 1947, narrative says 'decommissioned for the final time on July 25, 1948' with storage at Coast Guard Moorings, Cape May, as a recruit-training aid; logged unresolved. Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding and that the wartime program drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard U.S.-built hulls - the construction era and federal-building context into which this Bath Iron Works-built 1932 cutter falls.

    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarship focused on 1940s WWII shipbuilding; this hull was built 1931-32, before the wartime expansion it documents, though she served through it. Does not name this vessel or class; does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

    Finding
Contemporaneous 1935 trade-press description of the 165-ft cutter class's construction (quoted verbatim in the USCG historian file) records the material plant: two 670-hp Winton diesels, twin-screw, and 'genuine wrought iron pipe' for fuel oil, lubricating oil, water service, fire and bilge systems, and 'the steam heating system' - establishing that this diesel-powered class carried a steam-heating system (a lagging-relevant installation) while making no statement about insulation composition or asbestos anywhere in the quoted description.

Construction trades (Bath Iron Works and other class builders, 1931-34); cutter crews
    Limitations
Class-level contemporaneous description, not a hull record and not an insulation specification; its silence on asbestos is not evidence of absence and its steam-heating detail is not evidence of asbestos lagging. Establishes systems present on the class; does not establish presence or absence of asbestos aboard this hull.

Press report (September 2008) documents Circle Line's retirement of the vessel: Circle Line acquired the 165-foot Calypso for $1 in 1956 'Coast Guard records show,' renamed her Circle Line XI, and retired her to make room for new builds including the $5M Circle Line Manhattan; Circle Line offered to donate her to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans (declined), queried the Coast Guard about reclaiming her for training, and the Hudson River Maritime Museum (Kingston, NY) evaluated her at Pier 83 as a possible destination, with scrapping acknowledged as a possibility.

The $1/1956 acquisition figure attributed to 'Coast Guard records' conflicts with NavSource's 2 Nov 1955 Circle Line acquisition - logged. No asbestos or condition-survey content.

Open-web screening for 'Calypso' + asbestos/lawsuit returned only name collisions, all classified non-qualifying: Calypso Cargo Ltd. v. United States Coast Guard, 850 F. Wash. 1982) - different vessel; a law-firm marketing page lists 'USS Calypso (AG-35)' in a boilerplate auxiliary-ship list - excluded as a banned source class carrying no case identification.
