- DANFS: 'Canasatego was a capable Onondaga Chief who played an important role in the Council in Philadelphia in 1742. Canasatego (YN-38), formerly Sheila Moran, was acquired by the Navy and placed in service in October 1940. On 1 May 1942 she was reclassified YNT-6, and on 2 August 1945 became YTM-732. She served in the 10th Naval District until 29 April 1947 when she was transferred to the Maritime Administration for disposal.'

- Limitations
- Official Navy history; short entry establishes identity, acquisition, reclassifications, district assignment, and disposal only. DANFS says 'Maritime Administration' for the 1947 disposal - NavSource and Shipscribe say Maritime Commission (the MA name was not adopted until 1950; the MC wording is consistent for a 1947 disposal). No construction details, dimensions, or asbestos/materials content.

- Limitations
- Compiled archival reference (secondary compilation of Navy and merchant-registry records), not a contemporaneous record. Dimension discrepancy vs Shipscribe compilation (88'4" vs 93'0" length; 9'1" vs 10'9" draft) unresolved - both carried, neither resolved to a primary source. 'In service' dates for district craft are not commissioning dates in the warship sense. No asbestos or materials content.

- Shipscribe record for YN-38 (spelled CANASTEGO): ex merchant SHEILA MORAN; 137 gross tons, 93.0' x 22.0' x 10.75', 750 hp; acquired 1 October 1940, in service 24 October 1940; conversion by New York Navy Yard completed 1 November 1940; to YNT-6 1 May 1942; to YTM-732 2 August 1945; out of service circa December 1946; struck 28 January 1947; Maritime Commission disposal 29 April 1947; merchant CATHERINE MORAN 1947. Class notes: CNO directed acquisition of the 24-vessel YN 33-56 group on 3 July 1940 under the District Craft Act of 26 June 1940 (FY1941); all but one (METACOM, YN-51, steam) were diesel propelled, and six (YN 38-39, 44-46, 56) were diesel-electric; all had one screw; 'conversions were probably limited to fitting out for operation by Navy crews'; all 24 were reclassified YNT on 8 April 1942 effective 1 May 1942.

- Limitations
- Compiled from Navy record groups (Shipscribe project of record) but is a secondary compilation, not a contemporaneous document; spelling CANASTEGO is a published variant - same hull, not a second vessel. The class note that conversions were limited fitting-out bounds the Navy-modification scope but does not enumerate materials. No asbestos content.

Spot-check of the December 1940 unit (NAID 146176178): page headers read 'Log of the U.S.S. Canasatego - Attached to the 10th Naval District'; entries for 22-25 December 1940 record underway for Charleston, S.C., transiting Charleston Harbor channel, and mooring starboard side to USS Donacona (YN-39) at Pier 317, Charleston Navy Yard; daily 'Examined and found to be correct' signature reads Ensign, U.S.N.R., Commanding.

- Limitations
- Primary contemporaneous record verified by direct image inspection; handwriting transcription is partial and not exhaustive (movement/mooring detail verified for 22-25 Dec 1940 only). Coverage gap: no file unit for 1 April-12 May 1942, and no post-1942 deck logs surfaced in the catalog search - later-year log disposition unverified. Deck logs document movements and personnel, not materials; no asbestos statement expected or found.

- Limitations
- Catalog full-text index confirms the name occurs inside these units, but the specific mention text was not extracted (microfilm scans, 9+ images each; war-diary references may be task-organization or station lists rather than operational narratives). Muster-roll hits are for the shore stations she was attached to, not a vessel-specific roll found. Open research avenue: the war diaries could pin down her San Juan net-tender employment; muster rolls could enumerate crew for exposure research. No asbestos statement expected or found.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding and naval vessels during WWII - the era in which this 1939-built tug was acquired (Oct 1940), fitted out at the New York Navy Yard (Nov 1940), and operated (1940-1947). For this hull the era framing is bounded: she was a diesel-electric commercial tug with no steam plant, so the principal boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply; era-consistent asbestos applications aboard a small diesel tug are engine-exhaust/muffler insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, joiner fireproofing, and brake linings.

- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship; does not name this vessel, does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, and does not establish quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. The diesel-electric, no-steam-plant qualification limits how far the era inference can extend to this specific hull.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming Canasatego / YN-38 / YNT-6 / YTM-732 was found in the public sources searched - DANFS, NavSource, and Shipscribe contain no asbestos or materials statement; MARAD ShipHistory returned no record under any name variant; NVR carries no entry (vessel disposed 1947); all four CourtListener base queries completed 2026-10-05 - 'Canasatego' and 'YN-38' opinion/docket returned zero vessel hits (the ten 'YN-38' docket hits are name collisions, none referencing the vessel).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1939-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing insulation and components, and her deck logs/war diaries are unreviewed for materials references. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
