- Finding
- NAVSEA identifies CANON as PG-90, an Asheville (PG-84)-class patrol combatant, formerly PGM-90 and redesignated PG-90 on 1 April 1967. It identifies Tacoma (Washington) Boatbuilding Co. as builder; records diesel engines/gas turbines and twin screws; and lists decommissioning 31 January 1977, striking 9 October 1984, INACTSHIPMAINTO Philadelphia, and a planned DLA scrap sale. The evaluation records Western Pacific deployments from 1970 to 1974, three Vietnam deployments in 1970-72, and the 11 August 1970 Song Bo De River ambush.

- Population
- Tacoma Boatbuilding construction workforce; U.S. Navy crew; Vietnam-era crew
- Limitations
- This is a hull-specific historical evaluation, not a materials survey. It contains no asbestos product, insulation, abatement, exposure, or litigation finding. Its snapshot reads launched 22 July 1967 and commissioned 26 July 1968, which conflicts with NavSource and the batch-supplied 10 June 1967 launch and 28 July 1968 commission dates; the conflict is carried rather than reconciled.

- Canon (PG-90) page, timeline and Specifications blocks
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's Canon hull page identifies the modern vessel as ex-PGM-90, Asheville-class: laid down 28 June 1966 at Tacoma Boatbuilding Co.; reclassified PG-90 on 1 April 1967; launched 10 June 1967; commissioned USS Canon (PG-90) 28 July 1968; decommissioned 31 January 1977 at Naval Station San Diego; and struck 9 October 1984. It describes CODOG propulsion using two Cummins diesel engines and a General Electric LM1500 gas-turbine engine driving two controllable-pitch propellers.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a naval-history photo archive rather than an official register. It supplies the 28 July 1968 commission date used by batch scope, but conflicts with the NAVSEA evaluation's 26 July date and launch date. It contains no asbestos documentation; diesel/gas-turbine propulsion does not establish the absence or presence of asbestos-containing components.

- PDF chapter 4, p. 67, Canon (PG-90) paragraph
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC's Vietnam-war history identifies Canon (PG-90) in August 1970 during harassment-and-interdiction fire on the Bo De River. It reports that an RPG struck the gunboat's bridge, wounding commanding officer Lieutenant Commander David B. Robinson, and that Canon drove off the ambush and went to Sea Float; Robinson received the Navy Cross.

- Limitations
- NHHC's operational history corroborates the modern PG-90's Vietnam identity and service event, but it is not a materials, exposure, or legal record. It gives no asbestos product, quantity, location, survey, repair scope, or causal conclusion.

- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index lists CANON (PG-90) in Record Group 19, Hull Series of Ship Engineering Drawings, NAID 153715755. The indexed engineering-drawing holding is a primary-source lead for construction and alteration specifications for this specific hull.

- Population
- N/A—archival engineering records
- Limitations
- The index establishes a drawing holding, not its contents. The plans were not retrieved or reviewed for this record, so no material, insulation, asbestos, component, or alteration conclusion is drawn from this entry.

- Locator
- PDF pp. 1-2 (Navy statements on components, thermal insulation, 1973 specifications, and deliveries through May 1978)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy-wide 1979 review states that, according to the Navy, ships contained asbestos in components including clutches and electric cables, while thermal insulation had been the Navy's major shipboard asbestos use; it also reports a 1973 specification change to asbestos-free thermal insulation and that some vessels were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. This is class/era context for a Navy vessel built in 1966-68, not documentation of Canon's installed materials.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and Navy vessels addressed by GAO's 1979 review
- Limitations
- Program-level evidence only. GAO did not identify Canon, PG-90, the Asheville class, Tacoma Boatbuilding, or any Canon component. It cannot establish asbestos aboard this hull, a product identity, an exposure event, a quantity, remaining condition, or legal eligibility.

- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-canon-pgm90-01 through -08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, hazmat inventory, abatement record, material schedule, product-identification record, or qualifying asbestos-litigation record was located in the completed public-source review. The one attempted required CourtListener base query ("USS Canon", opinion, limit 20) was not executed because the authenticated fleet-wide pace limiter reported its budget momentarily spent and instructed stand-down; the remaining three base queries were not sent, so CourtListener litigation status remains an open gap rather than a negative result.

- Limitations
- This is a research-result finding, not proof that Canon lacked asbestos or that no litigation exists. NARA's indexed plan holding has not been reviewed, and CourtListener was incomplete due to a limiter stand-down. It establishes neither exposure, causation, product identity, quantity, nor legal eligibility.

[8]NavSource Online, Patrol/Gunboat Ship Photo Archive index: PG-90 Caprice to Great Britain as HMS Honesty (K-285) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource Patrol/Gunboat index PG-90 row; NAVSEA Canon evaluation p. 1
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION / MANUAL ACTION: an incoming master-list row calls a modern Asheville-class Vietnam vessel 'USS Honesty' at PG-90. NavSource's patrol/gunboat index identifies the unrelated WWII PG-90 as Caprice, transferred to Great Britain as HMS Honesty (K-285), while NAVSEA identifies the modern former PGM-90 as Canon (PG-90). These are distinct vessels with a reused hull number. The Honesty row must not be silently equated with Canon; it requires manual removal or remapping to Caprice/HMS Honesty.

- Limitations
- This correction resolves a database identity collision, not an asbestos question. The NavSource index is an archival secondary source; the canonical NHHC DANFS Caprice URL returned HTTP 404 on live direct verification, so it is not presented as a live citation. No asbestos finding is made about either vessel.
