DANFS entry for Carmita (II): 'The second Carmita (IX-152), formerly Slate, was acquired and placed in service on 11 May 1944. She was attached to Service Force, Pacific Fleet, until 25 September 1946 when she was stricken from the Navy List.' IX-152 was named for the first Carmita, a schooner captured by USS Magnolia on 27 December 1862, condemned by the Key West prize court, and used as a lighter at Key West until 1866.

Terse official entry establishing acquisition/in-service date, fleet attachment, and striking date only. 'Formerly Slate' conflicts with Maritime Commission records compiled by ShipScribe (MC hull 1328 was mercantile SILICA) — see correction row ev-uss-carmita-ix152-06. Finding
ShipScribe class notes: the Maritime Commission contracted Barrett & Hilp for 26 non-self-propelled 366-foot B7-D1 concrete barges (30 Jun 1942 + 4 Aug 1942 additions; six later cancelled), designed to transport bauxite ore; Barrett & Hilp built the Belair Shipyard at South San Francisco under MC contract. On 4 Oct 1943 CinCPac requested that six B7-D1s be acquired and converted by their builder for carrying and issuing general stores (GSK) at advanced bases — essentially the installation of a 'tween deck in the holds — with Navy crew rising from 16 (basic barge) to 53 (GSK) or 61 (refrigerated variant). IX-152 was one of this group, completed as an Army and Marine Corps stores issue barge. 'All were placed in service, not in commission.'

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Naming discrepancy resolved against Maritime Commission/Navy records as compiled by ShipScribe: DANFS and NavSource describe IX-152 as 'formerly Slate,' but MC hull 1328's mercantile name was SILICA — it was originally assigned Navy name Silica with hull number IX-151, and became Carmita (IX-152) under CNO's 15 Feb 1944 name/hull-number correction, which preserved the intended name order after completion dates shifted among MC hulls 1326-1331. SLATE was instead MC hull 1329, which became USS Midnight and then USS Trefoil (IX-149). Wikipedia's 'launched as Silica, then renamed Slate' conflates the two hulls. Disposal record: out of service 30 May 1946 (ShipScribe disposition table; NavSource 'date unknown'), stricken 25 Sep 1946 (all sources), destruction/abandonment authorized by CNO to ComNavPhil 5 Mar 1947, disposal recorded 24 Mar 1947, reported sunk 27 Mar 1947 by Ship Repair Facility, Manicani — NavSource and Wikipedia give only 'sunk 1947, location unknown.'

Resolves published naming conflicts in favor of the MC/BuShips-compiled record; 'formerly Slate' nonetheless persists in the official DANFS text and is flagged rather than erased. Does not resolve the 24 Mar vs. 27 Mar 1947 disposal/sunk difference. No asbestos content in any cited source.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII — the era and program under which this concrete barge was built (1943-44) and converted for stores issue. Applicability caveat specific to this hull: the B7-D1 is ferrocement-concrete-hulled and non-self-propelled with no boilers or steam plant, so the asbestos-intensive systems typical of powered ships were absent by design. Era-plausible asbestos uses on a barge of this outfit are confined to diesel-generator exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, wiring insulation, and accommodation/galley insulation products — none documented for this hull.

    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarship; does not name this vessel and establishes neither presence nor absence of asbestos aboard this hull. The concrete hull and absence of steam plant reduce — but do not eliminate — era-plausible ACM (auxiliary diesel generators and outfit materials remained). No quantity, condition, exposure, or causation established.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming IX-152/Carmita was found in the public sources searched. The vessel was a concrete-hulled, non-self-propelled stores barge sunk in Philippine waters in March 1947 — no museum custody, no NRHP/NHL nomination, no surviving operator archive. MARAD ShipHistory name searches return no record for 'Carmita' or 'Silica' ('Slate' returns only the unrelated WILLIS A. SLATER) — consistent with the hull never returning to Maritime Commission/MARAD custody. CourtListener name/hull sweep was attempted but blocked by fleet pacing (no query executed) — logged as blocked in search_ledger.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard — auxiliary machinery and outfit materials of a 1943-44 barge are era-consistent with ACM. Conversely, the hull's destruction in Philippine waters in 1947 forecloses future survey or abatement documentation entirely. Does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
