[2]Naval History and Heritage Command, DANFS, LST-527 (archived capture of the official NHHC entry) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Archived NHHC DANFS entry, full text
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC DANFS records that LST-527 was laid down on 23 October 1943 at Jeffersonville, Indiana, by Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched on 3 January 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Bliss A. Fox; and commissioned on 17 February 1944 with Lt. W. R. Hammock in command. It served in the European theater and participated in the June 1944 Normandy invasion; was decommissioned on 28 February 1945; recommissioned on 21 September 1950 for Korean service; was named Cassia County on 1 July 1955; was decommissioned on 21 December 1956, struck on 1 October 1958, and sunk as a target on 3 March 1959. DANFS credits one World War II battle star and two Korean War battle stars.

- Limitations
- The current NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 on direct verification; the archived capture preserves the official entry and is labeled archived. DANFS documents history and disposition, not asbestos content, material condition, individual exposure, or causation.

- Finding
- NavSource's live hull page identifies USS Cassia County (LST-527), ex-USS LST-527, as an LST-491-class ship and gives the ship-specific specification block: 328 feet overall length, 50 feet beam, 11.6-knot trial speed, complement 13 officers and 104 enlisted, troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted, two LCVPs, two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive 100-kW 230-V DC generators, two propellers at 1,700 shp, and twin rudders. The page repeats the construction, service, naming, strike, target-sinking, and campaign milestones.

[4]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. 2 (1945), LST design table; class profile used only as background; NavSource ship specification block [other_primary]
- Locator
- SDB 1945 Vol. 2 LST design table; NavSource 160527.htm specifications block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The Bureau of Ships 1945 design table for the LST design group documents a 328-foot tank landing ship design with two General Motors 12-567A diesels and approximately 1,700 shp. Combined with the ship-specific NavSource machinery block, this supports a class/era inference that the hull was diesel-powered and had no boiler or steam plant; plausible wartime asbestos applications are diesel-exhaust and machinery-space insulation, gaskets and packing, accommodation insulation, deck coverings, and winch/windlass brake linings.

- Limitations
- Design and era evidence does not name asbestos or prove that any listed material was installed aboard LST-527. It does not establish quantity, location, condition, present-day survival, exposure, or causation.

[5]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page; full report text not retrieved
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy asbestos program review documents that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s, providing era context for a 1944 Navy vessel.

- Navy shipyard workers and shipboard personnel generally
- Limitations
- Program-level context only, not a finding about LST-527. The GAO full-text endpoint returned HTTP 403 during direct retrieval; the product-page description was used. No ship-specific material, quantity, condition, exposure, or causation is established.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-cassia-county-lst527-01 through -07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the official and authoritative sources reviewed: the archived DANFS entry, live NavSource hull page, Bureau of Ships design table, GAO program page, and NARA ship-plan index. No asbestos survey, material schedule, or hazmat disclosure naming LST-527 was found. The incomplete CourtListener sweep is not treated as a litigation negative.

- Limitations
- A negative public-source finding does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Class/era inference remains separate from ship-specific proof and does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
