    Finding type

    Finding
Published federal opinion names this hull in an asbestos personal-injury action: plaintiff John Surre served in the U.S. Navy February 1957 to February 1959 and, per his deposition, 'was exposed to asbestos-containing insulation materials while performing equipment maintenance on the U.S.S. Cassin Young' (Pl.'s 10/9/07 Dep. at 45-54, 61-63, 71-73). On summary judgment, Judge Robreno (E.D. Pa., MDL-875) granted Crane Co.'s motion as to the Navy claims because Surre 'concedes that he has no proof that Crane manufactured, sold, or supplied the valves on board the U.S.S. Cassin Young'; the S.D.N.Y. opinion resolves remaining law-of-the-case and New York duty-to-warn issues for the Quality Insulation claims.

    Population
John Surre (USN equipment-maintenance sailor aboard DD-793, 1957-1959; mesothelioma)
    Limitations
Pleading/deposition-stage record: the exposure statement is the court's recital of Surre's deposition testimony, not an adjudicated finding that asbestos was aboard or caused disease. The merits disposition is a defense summary-judgment win on product identification (plaintiff could not identify Crane products aboard), which is not evidence for or against asbestos presence on the hull. Does not quantify asbestos, identify other products, or establish causation or legal eligibility.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry gives no keel-laying date (begins at launch) and no stricken date; both are carried from secondary sources and flagged in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

Nelson doc. 8-3 paras. 28-34 (exhibit provenance list); MacQueen doc. 27 paras. 29-35 (same); Ledergerber doc. 43 full text (no vessel mention)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
All three formerly unresolved index references resolved on authenticated retrieval (2026-09-25): in BOTH Nelson and MacQueen, 'USS Cassin Young (DD-793)' appears only as the photocopy-provenance note for an exhibit - plaintiffs' counsel copied a Buffalo Pumps instruction book for DD-445-class Main Feed Pumps 'found at the library of U.S.S. Cassin Young (DD-793) ship museum in Boston, Massachusetts' (Nelson doc. 8-3 para. 30; MacQueen doc. 27 para. 31). The museum's library is being used as a documentary source for Fletcher-class equipment manuals; the hull is not an alleged exposure site in either case - non-qualifying incidental mentions. Ledergerber v. Blubaugh is a Harford County, Md. pawn-shop civil-rights action (suit nature 'Civil Rights: Other'); its 'DD-793' index match is an OCR artifact of a paragraph citation ('Id. para. para.') - no vessel mention at all - pure name collision.

    Limitations
Verified non-qualifying: none of the three dockets alleges exposure aboard this hull. The Nelson/MacQueen citations incidentally confirm the museum library holds era DD-445-class equipment manuals, but say nothing about asbestos content, exposure, or legal eligibility concerning DD-793.

  6. [6]DANFS specifications block (Fletcher class; 4 B&W boilers/GE turbines per NPS nomination) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bethlehem Shipbuilding record (era asbestos-documented yard) [other_primary]

    Finding type

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Fletcher-class destroyer built 1943 with a four-boiler Babcock & Wilcox / GE turbine steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing; builder Bethlehem Steel's San Pedro yard falls under the Atlas 'bethlehem-shipbuilding' yard record (asbestos-era builder). 1951 reactivation and 1960 inactivation at Norfolk Naval Shipyard are documented yard events during which era insulation work would have occurred.

    Finding
No asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, or donation-condition environmental document for this hull was located in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Beyond the Surre litigation recital, no ship-specific document establishes asbestos content aboard DD-793.
