- Complete service chronology: launched 1941-02-22 by Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR, sponsored by Mrs. E. B. Colton; placed in service 1941-06-20 for 12th Naval District duty; commissioned 1942-05-22 at Alameda, CA (LTjg F. J. George, USNR). Sailed for Fiji Islands 1942-05-24; laid and tended harbor entrance nets at Nandi, Suva, and (Oct-Nov 1942) Funafuti, Ellice Islands. Overhaul at Dunedin, NZ early 1944, during which she was redesignated AN-10 on 1944-01-20. Cape Torokina, Bougainville from 1944-02-20; Solomon Islands net tending, mooring buoys, towing, salvage, and diving services through spring-summer 1944. Staged at Guadalcanal; arrived off Peleliu 1944-09-15; net and salvage work at mine-infested Kossol Passage; Palau operations to 1945-02-28, then Ulithi and Eniwetok; Marshalls until 1945-06-30; 11th Naval District duty from San Pedro. Decommissioned at Astoria, OR 1946-10-21. Recommissioned 1950-08-07; San Francisco Bay net depot training and local duty; deployed from San Diego 1952-02-01, tending nets in Tokyo Bay through 1954 with a Guam period in fall 1953; arrived New London, CT 1955-05-04; out of commission in reserve 1955-10-07. Two battle stars for WWII service.

- Limitations
- DANFS is the authoritative Navy ship-history record but contains no asbestos, insulation-material, or industrial-hygiene content. NHHC live page was unreachable (404) at access date - transcription mirror cited, consistent with standing NHHC link-rot noted in BATCH-01-REPORT. DANFS dates redesignation to 20 January during the early-1944 Dunedin overhaul (i.e., 1944-01-20); NavSource prints '20 January 1943' - a typo, since the class-wide YN-to-AN reclassification was effective 1944-01-20.

- Construction and disposition record: ordered 1940-07-27 under the FY1941 program; keel laid 1940-10-24 at Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR; launched 1941-02-22; placed in service 1941-06-20; commissioned 1942-05-22; ex-YN-5 effective 1944-01-20; in USN reserve 1946-1950 and 1955-1961; transferred to NDRF custody 1961-11-21; stricken 1962-09-01; sale of 1974-06-13 rescinded 1974-07-09; delivered to buyer 1975-01-14.

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation of official records (NVR, MARAD custody records) - highly reliable for dates but not itself a primary document. Note the printed sequence: NDRF transfer (1961-11-21) precedes the formal strike date (1962-09-01); custody-before-striking transfers of this kind occurred but the record does not detail instrument dates. Strike date corroborated by NavalCoverMuseum (1962-09-01); NavSource lists the strike date as unknown. Final fate after 1975 sale not documented - presumed scrapping. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- USPHS industrial-hygiene survey of pipe-covering operations at two Navy yards and two Navy contract yards: 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels is amosite' (asbestos), with dust counts and X-ray screening of pipe coverers. Documents that asbestos-containing thermal insulation was standard material in U.S. naval vessel construction contemporaneous with this hull's 1940-41 build and 1942-43 fitting-out.

- Survey conducted c. 1944-45; published 1946-01
- Population
- Shipyard pipe coverers and insulators (survey population)
- Limitations
- Class/era construction-practice evidence, not a hull record: the surveyed yards are anonymized (A-D) and the article does not name this vessel or the Aloe class. Establishes era-standard asbestos pipe covering in Navy construction generally; does not establish asbestos aboard this hull, its quantity, or exposure of any individual. The article's conclusion that pipe covering was 'not a dangerous occupation' is itself historically contested (a 2026 analysis calls the study deeply flawed) - the data, not the conclusion, is the citable content.

[4]ShipScribe (Stephen S. Roberts), USS Aloe (AN-6) class notes - General Board design history and machinery specification [other_primary]
- Locator
- AN-6 class notes (design history) and machinery line
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The YN-1/AN-6 class was designed to a 1939-40 General Board requirement for steel-hulled district net tenders; the approved propulsion was a diesel-electric plant (specified 1,000 shp, fitted at 800 shp) driving a single screw, deliberately chosen over the steam reciprocating plant of the comparable British ship - meaning these hulls carried no boilers or steam-drum insulation. Deck winches for net and mooring work were powered off the main propulsion units. All class units were reclassified from YN to AN effective 1944-01-20.

- 1939-1944 (design/construction era)
- Limitations
- Class-design data: establishes the machinery type fitted on this hull but says nothing about insulation materials aboard it. A diesel-electric plant removes the boiler/steam-line insulation pathway typical of steam auxiliaries but does not rule out era-typical asbestos in exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, or winch brake/clutch linings - all inference, not ship-proven.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Catalpa / Catalpa (YN-5) / AN-10 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener: 'USS Catalpa' returned 0 opinions; 'Catalpa asbestos' returned 0 opinions; broad 'Catalpa' opinion (186 hits) and docket (1,120 hits) searches returned only name collisions (street addresses, condominiums, LLCs, a Wisconsin health organization) - no vessel-related litigation identified.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the 1940-41 construction era is consistent with era-typical asbestos-containing materials, and the hull's disposal path (NDRF 1961, sale 1975) means no museum or abatement record was ever likely to be generated. This finding does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Unretrieved primary records that could carry ship-specific detail: BuShips builder's-trial photographs (19-N-24264/24265) held by NARA; deck logs for the 1941-1955 commissioned periods in RG 24; the MARAD vessel status card documenting NDRF custody and the 1974-75 sales chain. Yard availabilities (Dunedin overhaul early 1944; Hunters Point availability visible in a 1951-12-21 photo caption) and any material substitutions would appear in such records if anywhere.
