    Finding
USS Catron (APA-71), Gilliam-class attack transport, built by Consolidated Steel Corporation, Wilmington, CA (MC hull 1864). Launched 28 August 1944 (sponsored by Mrs. A. O. Williams); acquired 27 November 1944; commissioned 28 November 1944 (Lt. Cmdr. D. MacInnes). Westinghouse turboelectric drive, 2 boilers, 2 propellers, 6,000 shp; 16.9 knots; capacity 47 officers and 802 enlisted troops; cargo 2,600 tons; complement 27 officers and 295 enlisted. Service: amphibious training in the Solomon/Florida Islands (Purvis Bay, Ulithi); carried the 6th Marines to Okinawa for the initial assault 1 April 1945 (offshore about a week); transported 297 Japanese POWs from Guam to San Francisco (arrived 5 July 1945); occupation troop lift to Japan (landed 25 September 1945); returned 562 former POWs to San Francisco (19 October 1945); two San Francisco-Philippines voyages. Stripped at Pearl Harbor in February 1946 as an Operation Crossroads target; remained afloat after the tests but radioactively contaminated. Decommissioned 29 August 1946; sunk as a target 6 May 1948 by USS Atlanta (CL-104) (some sources also name USS Duluth (CL-87)). One battle star for WWII service. Distinct hull from sister ship USS Carteret (APA-70).

    Role
    supporting
    Documentation level
    ship_specific
    Limitations
DANFS returning HTTP 500 fleet-wide; identity rests on the Naval Historical Center summary via HyperWar (ibiblio), disclosed as a derived source, corroborated against the DANFS-derived Wikipedia narrative and the ShipScribe class table. Sinking-ship credit differs between sources (Atlanta alone vs Atlanta and Duluth); the conflict is recorded, not resolved.

  2. [2]Negative search result across authoritative repositories (2026-09-25) [other_primary]
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos documentation located for USS Catron (APA-71) in any authoritative source searched (Navy, NARA, HAER, museum records). This is a negative finding, not an absence of exposure.

    Limitations
Negative finding reflects search coverage, not proof of absence. No hull-specific asbestos survey located.

  3. [3]CourtListener authenticated search (combined ship name + hull number) not completed - sandbox credential block (2026-09-25) [court_record]
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
CourtListener authenticated search for the combined ship name and hull number ("USS Catron" APA-71) could not be completed during the writing session. The authenticated helper (cl-search) failed: the authd service returned HTTP 403, meaning the stored CourtListener connector credential is not available to the sandbox, so no query was issued and no results were returned. The search gap is logged; the search must be retried from an authorized environment before any litigation finding can be claimed.

    negative_finding
    Documentation level
    ship_specific
    Limitations
Search not run; no litigation finding can be claimed. Retry required for complete coverage.

  4. [4]U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, asbestos exposure guidance for Navy veterans [other_primary]
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Era context: the Department of Veterans Affairs states that many WWII-era Navy ships contained asbestos products, with boiler and engine rooms of particular concern because asbestos was widely used as insulation during this period.

    Limitations
