    Finding
DANFS entry for Chachalaca (AMc-41): coastal minesweeper laid down 27 December 1940 by the Bristol Yacht Building Co., South Bristol, Maine; launched 11 June 1941, sponsored by Miss Joanne Witherell; delivered to the Navy at the Boston Navy Yard 25 August 1941; placed in service 11 September 1941. Slated for Mine Warfare School, Yorktown, Va. (5th Naval District), but delayed by materiel conditions despite a CNO request for accelerated readiness; departed Boston 5 January 1942, arrived Hampton Roads 8 January. Assigned to the 10th Naval District; sailed with Montcalm (AT-39) for San Juan, P.R. 24 January 1942, arriving 28 January. Assigned to Naval Operating Base, Trinidad, 1 April 1942; daily sweeping interrupted by magnetic-sweep cable failures and unsatisfactory local repairs; sister Caracara (AMc-40) suffered the same failures - Commander Inshore Patrol, Trinidad Sector, told BuShips 4 April 1942 the pair were 'the only two vessels available between the British and ourselves that are capable of actually doing a sweeping job in the Gulf of Paria.' Assigned to Caribbean Sea Frontier 23 July 1942 - 21 April 1944, then reported to Commandant, Tenth Naval District; continued minesweeping to war's end. Assigned to Sixth Naval District, Charleston, S.C., 27 June 1945; arrived 7 September 1945. Placed out of service 4 January 1946; stricken 8 May 1946; sold through the U.S. Maritime Commission 10 September 1947 to Evald Sooder of Miami, Florida.

Authoritative identity/history record naming this hull. Contains no asbestos, materials, or insulation information - supports no asbestos claim. Live NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-09-23 and its only Wayback capture (2026-07-01) is itself a 404, so the expanded-entry text is verified through Wikipedia's verbatim public-domain transcription; the short print-edition DANFS (hazegray mirror, Wayback capture) independently corroborates launch, in-service, 10th Naval District, out-of-service, and stricken dates. The 2018 expanded narrative details (delivery date, sponsor, Yorktown delays, Trinidad cable failures, Caribbean Sea Frontier dates, MC sale) rest on the transcription alone.

There was only one basic design - the 97-foot, 10-knot Accentor class' - with the row 'AMc 41 | Charcalaca | Bristol Yachtbuilding | 97 | 205 | 11-Sep-41 | Sold 1946.' (b) Harvey F. Gamage yard table (South Bristol ME; 'Harvey Gamage started this yard, which was also known as Bristol Yachtbuilding, in 1924: it closed in 1981') - Chachalaca is yard hull 118, one of five consecutive Navy minesweeper hulls: 117 Caracara (AMc 40), 118 Charcalaca (AMc 41), 119 Assertive (AMc 65), 120 Avenge (AMc 66), 121 Bold (AMc 67).

    Limitations
Compiler's yard tables, secondary - corroborate builder identity (Bristol Yachtbuilding = the Harvey F. Gamage yard, South Bristol), the five-hull Navy block (yard nos. 117-121), tonnage class (205 t vs DANFS-derived 173 and NavSource 224), and the single-design 70-hull/15-boatyard program frame. Its 'Sold 1946' disposal shorthand compresses the DANFS-documented 1947 Maritime Commission sale - flagged in the correction row. Contains no asbestos or materials information.

uboat.net Allied Warships entry for USS Chachalaca (AMc-41): 'Minesweeper of the Accentor class'; built by Bristol Yacht Building Co. (South Bristol, Maine); ordered 29 January 1941; laid down 27 December 1940; launched 11 June 1941; commissioned 11 September 1941; decommissioned 4 January 1946; stricken 8 May 1946 - corroborating the DANFS/NavSource chronology and confirming the class name as Accentor. The HyperWar/ibiblio 'US Navy Minecraft, 1940-1945' compilation independently lists 'AMc-41 | Chachalaca | 1941' in the Accentor/Acme class block, whose class header prints: displacement 185-205 tons; length 97'1"-98'5"; beam 21'-23'7"; draft 8'11"-10'8"; speed 10 knots; armament 2 .50 cal. machine guns; complement 17; 'Diesel engine, 400 h.p.'; 'Wooden-hulled ships designed for inshore operations.'

Specialist secondary compilations - corroborate dates, builder, class naming, and the diesel/wooden-hull design basis. 'Ordered 29 Jan 1941' rests on uboat.net alone and post-dates the 27 Dec 1940 keel - secondary-only oddity, not carried into record fields. uboat's 'Commissioned 11 Sep 1941' is its generic label; DANFS records 'placed in service' (never commissioned). Finding
Era-level inference only: peer-reviewed scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this wooden-hulled coastal minesweeper was built. Period marine diesel installations and auxiliary machinery commonly used asbestos-containing gaskets, packing, and exhaust-system insulation; aboard a ~200-ton, 97-ft diesel minesweeper the plausible applications, if any, would be confined to such machinery fittings. The documented Trinidad operations record repeated magnetic-sweep cable failures and unsatisfactory local repairs (April 1942) - a documented maintenance-disturbance pattern aboard this hull, but nothing documents the materials involved.

Bristol Yacht Building construction trades (South Bristol ME, 1940-41); wartime crew (design complement 17); Trinidad repair/maintenance workforce (1942)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarship only - does not name this vessel or the Accentor class and does not establish that asbestos was or is aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. No class- or design-specific material documentation for AMc minesweepers was located; the diesel/wooden-hull profile (no boilers, no steam plant) limits plausible scope relative to steam-driven vessels. The machinery-fitting applications named are general era practice, not documented aboard this class; the 1942 cable repairs are documented events whose material scope is undocumented.

Source discrepancies documented, not reconciled: (a) displacement - DANFS-derived stats 173 t; Colton yard/minesweeper tables 205 t; NavSource spec block 224 t; class compilation range 185-205 t. (b) beam - 21'6" (DANFS-derived) vs 22'6" (NavSource). (c) armament - 2 x .50 cal (class references, DANFS-derived infobox) vs 1 x .50 cal (NavSource spec block). (d) disposal - expanded DANFS: sold via U.S. Maritime Commission 10 Sep 1947 to Evald Sooder, Miami; NavSource: stricken 8 May 1946 and 'sold to Evald Sooder of Miami, FL and was physically delivered the same day'; Colton: 'Sold 1946'. (e) status wording - DANFS 'placed in service' (never commissioned) vs uboat.net 'Commissioned 11 Sep 1941' (generic label). (f) ordered 29 Jan 1941 per uboat.net alone - post-dates the 27 Dec 1940 keel. (g) name spelling - 'Charcalaca' in Colton's tables vs 'Chachalaca' in all official sources. (h) engine - Atlas 6HM2124 400 shp (NavSource) vs class-level 'diesel engine, 400 h.p.' (HyperWar compilation); per-hull installation unverified.

Resolves nothing - documents a genuine multi-source conflict so a future pass does not silently pick one figure. NavSource's same-day-delivery disposal conflicts with DANFS's 10 Sep 1947 MC sale (DANFS carried in fields). 'Charcalaca' is a compiler typo, not an alias. Finding
NARA Special List #44 (List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947, by ship number) indexes a single deck-log run for this hull: 'AMC-41 (Chachalaca) 2/25/1944 - 7/25/1944' - held in Record Group 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel), Entry 118, at the National Archives at College Park. The hull does not appear on NARA's published list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog, so the run is retrievable only via Archives II textual reference. Coverage limitation: nothing is indexed for construction fitting (1941), the San Juan/Trinidad operations (1942-43), most of the Caribbean Sea Frontier period, or the final months through the 4 Jan 1946 out-of-service date; the indexed window (Feb-Jul 1944) covers her return to Tenth Naval District operations after the Caribbean Sea Frontier assignment ended 21 April 1944.

Verifies that NARA indexes one log run for this specific hull and its date coverage - not the logs' content, which is unsurveyed (no box-level retrieval performed; no spend authorized). The indexed run covers only Feb-Jul 1944; whether logs for the rest of her service exist but are unindexed is unknown. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed case naming USS Chachalaca or AMc-41 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener coverage: exact-name opinion search ('Chachalaca') returned one name collision (1973 Texas AG opinion re the chachalaca bird); hull-number opinion search ('AMc-41'/'AMC-41'/'AMc 41') returned one name collision (American Multi-Cinema case); docket search ('Chachalaca') returned ten collisions (Texas place/party names - bankruptcy, wildlife, and civil cases with no vessel nexus). A qualified 'Chachalaca' + asbestos opinion query could not be run - the fleet pacing budget was spent at run time; given zero vessel hits on the unqualified searches, the residual coverage gap is small but is logged, not asserted as a complete negative.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing machinery fittings even accounting for its lighter diesel insulation load. The unrun qualified litigation query is a coverage limitation, not a finding. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
