    Finding
For this hull, NavSource records: laid down 22 January 1945 at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Charleston, South Carolina; launched 12 February 1945; commissioned USS LSM(R)-407 on 9 May 1945 with LTjg Robert C. Van Vleck, USNR, in command; decommissioned 10 February 1947 at Astoria, Oregon; laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; named Chariton River LSMR-407 on 1 October 1955; struck from the Naval Register in 1958; and sold in 1960 to Tacoma Tug & Barge Co., Tacoma, Washington, for conversion to a barge, fate unknown. Its specification block gives five officers and 133 enlisted; two General Motors 16-287A non-reversing diesel engines, direct drive, 1,440 BHP each at 720 rpm; diesel-driven service generators; twin screws; and 2,800 shp.

    Population
Construction trades at Charleston (1945); ship's company, 5 officers and 133 enlisted (per source spec block)
    Limitations
NavSource is a specialist photographic archive and its history extract is attributed to LSM-LSMR Amphibious Forces, Vol. II (Turner Publishing, 1997), rather than a government registry. It is ship-specific history and specifications, not an asbestos or material record. The official NAVSEA inventory list instead gives a 1 June 1959 SOLD removal entry; the sale-date conflict is retained in gaps.

    Finding
NARA's container list includes an entry for Landing Ship, Medium LSM-407 dated 12 February 1945 in the Sixth Naval District at Charleston ship-commissioning files. This is an archival lead for the hull's Charleston construction/launch-period administrative record.

    Limitations
The online finding aid is a container list, not the underlying commissioning file. It does not say what action the 12 February date represents, identify materials, or document asbestos. Although the vessel was commonly styled LSM(R)-407, the NARA list displays LSM-407.

    Finding
NAVSEA's official ship-history list identifies hull ID LSMR 0407, hull name CHARITON RIVER, with removal date 1 June 1959 and final disposition SOLD.

    Limitations
The official list does not name the buyer, describe a conversion, give a decommissioning or strike date, or state an ultimate fate. Its 1 June 1959 removal date conflicts with NavSource's 1960 sale date; neither source is used to infer the other missing facts.

    Finding
The vessel's documented diesel propulsion supports only a design/era context: potential asbestos-relevant applications on diesel landing craft of this period include machinery-space thermal insulation, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. Charleston Naval Shipyard is a documented asbestos-using yard in the Atlas yard dataset. The vessel had no steam or boiler plant, so boiler and turbine lagging are not a pathway for this hull.

Charleston Navy Yard construction trades (1945); ship's company (1945-47 and 1955 reserve reactivation period)
    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only. No source identifies asbestos, a product, a manufacturer, a quantity, or an exposure event aboard LSM(R)-407. The yard dataset cannot establish what was installed on this hull, individual exposure, causation, or present-day material condition.

    Finding
OSHA's establishment record documents a complaint-type health inspection at Commander, Charleston Naval Shipyard opened 6 January 1988. It lists two citations issued 10 March 1988 under 29 CFR 1910.1001, the asbestos standard; one was subsequently deleted, and the case closed 16 September 1988.

    Limitations
This is a yard-level 1988 regulatory record, 43 years after the vessel's construction. It does not name Chariton River, establish that asbestos was aboard her, or publish a sampling result. It is context only.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the sources searched: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material list, or verified asbestos litigation naming USS Chariton River / LSM(R)-407. CourtListener status is unresolved, not negative: the required authenticated helper was invoked for the exact-name opinion search but the fleet pacing limiter denied it before an HTTP request was made, so no exact-name or hull-number CourtListener search could be completed. Firecrawl was likewise quota-blocked before its official-source search could run.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener is a material open research gap, not a no-result finding; exact-name and hull-number searches of both opinions and dockets remain required when the pacing budget is available. NARA underlying commissioning files, deck logs, repair records, commercial-conversion records, and any survey/abatement files were not reviewed.
