- Service narrative and closing paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS service narrative: Chase cruised primarily along the west coast of the United States in training operations and fleet maneuvers; took part in the Presidential Fleet Review at Seattle, Washington, in 1923; cruised in Nicaraguan waters in 1927 to protect American interests during civil war; cruised to Hawaii in 1928 with Naval Reserve members aboard for training; and in 1929 operated off San Diego with Saratoga (CV-3) and Lexington (CV-2) aiding the development of carrier aviation. Designated for scrapping under the provisions of the London Naval Treaty, Chase was decommissioned at San Diego 15 May 1930 and broken up during 1931.

- Limitations
- Service history and disposition only; DANFS states no laying-down date, no Navy-list strike date, and no materials or asbestos content. 'Designated for scrapping under the London Naval Treaty' is treaty-disposal language, not a scrapping-materials record.

[4]National Archives, Special List 44, Named Vessels, Chase (DD-323) entry [other_primary]
- Locator
- alphabetical table, Chase (DD-323) row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 (Named Vessels) lists deck logs for Chase (DD-323) covering 10 March 1921 through 15 May 1930, matching the ship's commissioned-service dates. A separate list row for 'Chase (DD-158, APD-54)', 1943-1945, is the later same-name ship named for Jehu Valentine Chase - a different hull (the list prints DD-158; the escort was DE-158, later APD-54).

- Limitations
- This is an inventory entry, not a review of the deck logs. NARA states deck logs do not directly document asbestos materials; these logs could help date major work periods if examined.

- CHASE DD-323 rows, RG 19, Alphabetical Ship Drawings and Microfilm
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index lists CHASE, DD-323, in Record Group 19 under Alphabetical Ship Drawings (NAID 53483902) and Microfilm (NAID 175668654). These collections are leads for examining ship-specific plans, including any available insulation (S39) and piping (S48) drawings. Other index rows for CHASE (Coast Guard cutter plans, WHEC-718, RG 26) are different vessels.

- General Information Books (RG 19 Entry P 9); Cartographic Branch S39/S48; Other Records and their usefulness sections
- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA's Navy-asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 Entry P 9, Destroyer, Destroyer Escort, and Frigate General Information Books (Item S-68, 1907-1961), and RG 19 ship engineering drawings including S39-Insulation and Lagging and S48-Piping as archival avenues for hull-level material research. The guide states that Navy ship deck logs and muster rolls (RG 24) 'do not provide any information on the use of or presence of asbestos in Navy ships or ship components and therefore provide no direct evidence of asbestos.'

- PDF pp. 11-12, Enclosure I, Navy letter (5 January 1979)
- Finding type

- Finding
- A 5 January 1979 Navy response reproduced by GAO describes asbestos in then-current Navy ship thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping systems (the 'major application'), plus deck tiling, electric cabling, galley ranges, piping gaskets and packing, and equipment brakes and clutches, and states all ships then in service contained some asbestos. Chase had left service in 1930 and is not identified; the response covers ships delivered since 1973 or under construction.

- The document concerns the Navy fleet in 1979 and ships delivered since 1973; it does not cover DD-323's 1919-1921 construction or 1921-1930 service and cannot establish any asbestos product aboard Chase. gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches; content verified via Wayback PDF capture.

- Search ledger sl-uss-chase-dd323-01 through sl-uss-chase-dd323-06
- Finding type

- Finding
- The official sources and catalog entries reviewed for this record (NHHC DANFS entry, NARA Special List 44, NARA Ship Plan Index, NARA asbestos research guide, GAO HRD-80-2) yielded no ship-specific asbestos survey, product schedule, abatement record, or material finding for Chase (DD-323). Asbestos presence aboard this hull remains unknown.

- Finding
- A complete authenticated CourtListener API v4 sweep returned no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull: opinion searches for "USS Chase" (unqualified and qualified by 'asbestos') and for exact hull number "DD-323" each returned count 0; the docket search for "USS Chase" returned count 0; the docket search for "DD-323" returned 10 hits that are all name collisions - non-asbestos civil and bankruptcy dockets (e.g., Madoff/SIPC bankruptcy, NYT v. Microsoft, prisoner and school-district cases) in which 'DD-323' appears as a document or docket artifact with no vessel reference.

- Covers CourtListener opinion and RECAP docket indexes only. Zero counts do not prove no complaint was ever filed - complaints that never produced an indexed opinion or docket entry, state-court filings outside RECAP, and filings naming the vessel only in full-text attachments may be missed. The ten DD-323 docket hits were reviewed by case name and court only (metadata level), not opened; none is an asbestos or admiralty case on its face.
