- Finding
- DANFS records east-coast, Caribbean, Newfoundland, and Iceland towing duties; the 1942 North Africa invasion and subsequent Casablanca service; 1943 yard-oiler duty there and an overhaul before Bermuda service; two 1944 Casablanca-to-United-States tows of damaged destroyers; and later target-towing and postwar towing operations.

- Limitations
- The overhaul is a documented event, but DANFS gives no yard, work package, insulation scope, or asbestos information. No exposure can be inferred from the operation or overhaul.

[3]U.S. Coast Guard Historian's Office, Cherokee, 1940 (2020) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Identification and specifications table; cutter history, final paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Coast Guard historian identifies the former ATF-66 as Cherokee WAT/WMEC-165, lists Coast Guard commissioning on 1946-06-29 and decommissioning on 1990-01-30, and describes four General Motors diesels driving Allis-Chalmers generators and electric motors and a single propeller. After decommissioning, the Navy turned Cherokee over to MARAD on 1991-02-28, reacquired her on 1993-10-06, and used her as a target.

- Limitations
- Coast Guard history supports cutter dates, designations, machinery, and later disposition. It lists a later cutter complement, but that figure was not cross-verified against DANFS/NHHC and is carried only as a gap. The machinery listing is not a materials inventory and does not establish asbestos presence or any exposure.

- Special List 44, Cherokee (AT-66) row; asbestos research guide, Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's named-vessels deck-log index lists Cherokee (AT-66) from 1940-04-26 through 1945-06-30. NARA explains that deck logs can narrow dates of ship work but do not themselves identify asbestos in a vessel.

- Limitations
- The index verifies a record range, not that the logs were inspected here. Deck logs cannot establish asbestos content; the listed end date is an index coverage boundary, not Cherokee's Navy decommissioning date.

- Locator
- Ship Plan Index, CHEROKEE AT-66 rows; asbestos guide, Cartographic Branch section
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's ship-plan index lists Cherokee AT-66 under RG 19 Hull Series of Ship Engineering Drawings (catalog identifier 153714173) and Portfolio Plans (175662036). NARA's asbestos research guide recommends reviewing S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping drawings when available.

- Limitations
- The index identifies plan series only. Individual drawings were not retrieved, and their titles or contents cannot be inferred. NARA notes S39 and S48 drawings are relatively rare. No asbestos aboard Cherokee is established.

- Beginning Research; Bureau of Ships; Cartographic Branch; Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA describes asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel during 1941-1961 as a subject requiring vessel-level research and directs researchers to Bureau of Ships correspondence, general information books, specifications, and engineering drawings to determine whether a particular ship had asbestos.

- Limitations
- NARA's guide is program and era context; it does not name Cherokee as an asbestos vessel, identify a product aboard her, or show any person's exposure. The tug's diesel-electric machinery does not imply asbestos. Evidence tier 2 reflects only era context, not a hull-specific asbestos finding.

- Locator
- Cutter history, August 1979 rehabilitation paragraph
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The Coast Guard historian records that USCGC Duane, a cutter launched in 1936 and serving during Cherokee's Coast Guard era, underwent a 1979 rehabilitation that replaced asbestos pipe shielding with calcium silicate, resin, and rubber.

- 1979 (Duane rehabilitation)
- Limitations
- This is a different cutter of a different class and yard. It documents a period Coast Guard asbestos pipe-shielding application only; it does not establish that Cherokee carried the same material, was rehabilitated similarly, or exposed any person.

- Finding type

- Locator
- search_ledger CourtListener rows; fleet helper cl-auth-search.py response counts
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener API v4 searches of the opinion and RECAP docket indexes for the exact vessel name 'USS Cherokee' returned zero results; the exact hull phrase 'Cherokee (AT-66)' returned zero opinion results. A broad 'AT-66' opinion search returned unrelated token matches and was not treated as vessel litigation.

- Limitations
- No result means no indexed match for these exact queries, not an affirmative finding that no case exists. Broad AT-66 search was heavily contaminated by generic numeric matches. The exact hull-phrase docket query remained queued at the time of drafting and must be updated from its helper response before finalization.

- Characteristics paragraph and service history, opening and final paragraphs

- Finding
- DANFS identifies Cherokee (AT-66) as a Navajo-class fleet tug with complement 85, laid down at Bethlehem Shipbuilding, Staten Island, on 1938-12-23, launched 1939-11-10, and commissioned 1940-04-26. It records reclassification to ATF-66 on 1944-05-15, decommissioning and transfer to the Coast Guard on 1946-06-29, and one World War II battle star.
