DANFS record for this hull: launched 11 April 1942 by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine, sponsored by Mrs. G. DeC. Chevalier; commissioned 20 July 1942, Lt. Comdr. E. R. McLean, Jr., in command. Three Atlantic convoy-escort voyages 3 October-11 December 1942 (coastwise tankers; Bermuda-Norfolk; early North Africa reinforcement convoy); sailed Norfolk 17 December 1942, reached Efate 22 January 1943. TF 18 cover for Guadalcanal transports; Battle of Rennell Island antiaircraft action 29-30 January. Patrols from Efate/Espiritu Santo; 7 May escorted minelayers to Blackett Strait and Kula Gulf (minefield sank/damaged Japanese destroyers Kuroshio, Oyashio, Kagero); 11-14 May Vila bombardment and Kula Gulf minelaying cover. Night action supporting Rice Anchorage landings: Strong (DD-467) torpedoed; Chevalier deliberately rammed alongside Strong's port side under shore-battery fire and took off 241 survivors, receiving a 10-by-2-foot bow hole; repaired Espiritu Santo 8-22 July. Covered Vella Lavella landings 15 August; 17 August action against Japanese destroyers/barges; September escort voyage to Sydney. Night of 6-7 October 1943, with O'Bannon (DD-450) and Selfridge (DD-357), intercepted a Japanese evacuation force off Vella Lavella: torpedo hit on the port bow at ~2205 severed the bow to the bridge; O'Bannon rammed the after engine room; Chevalier fired her tube torpedoes at the burning Yugumo, which blew up; abandon ship ordered 2326; crew taken off by O'Bannon's boats; sunk the following day by a torpedo from a friendly destroyer and the severed bow (found ~1 mile west) sunk by depth charges; 54 killed, 36 wounded; three battle stars. Spec block: dp. 2,050; 376'5" x 39'7" x 17'9"; 35 kt; cpl. 329; 5 x 5", 10 x 21" tt., 6 dcp., 2 dct.; cl. Fletcher.

Bath Iron Works construction trades 1941-42; wartime crew (design complement 329); 54 killed/36 wounded at loss
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Its ~2205 torpedo-hit and 2326 abandon-ship times conflict with the BuShips War Damage Report timeline and the CO's own action report (hit 2301; abandoned ~2h40m later) - carried in gaps. Its 'nine Japanese destroyers' conflicts with the NHHC Online Library's 'six'; its Kula Gulf entry date reads '1 July' in the HyperWar transcription but '4 July' on the NHHC page (the Strong rescue was the night of 4-5 July). DANFS gives no laid-down or stricken date. Mirror cited because the live NHHC page returns 404; NHHC Wayback capture (2025-12-08) reads identically except the July date.

    Finding
Official BuShips technical loss analysis of this hull, built on the CO's loss report (DD451/A16-3 Serial 0013 of 15 Oct 1943), CO O'Bannon Serial 009 and CO La Vallette Serial 006 of October 1943: class FLETCHER (DD445); launched 11 April 1942. At General Quarters with 'the engineering plant completely split, and material condition ABLE set.' Torpedo hit at 2301 just forward of the bridge at about frame 58, four-to-five feet below the waterline, assessed as a port-side Type 93 destroyer torpedo (the CO believed the hit starboard from small craft - divergence documented in the report); bow completely severed at ~frame 58; forward fireroom flooded rapidly through buckled/split bulkhead 72; ~1.5 minutes later O'Bannon's bow penetrated 10-12 feet into the after engineroom on the starboard side at ~frame 134, flooding it to sea level immediately and severing fuel-oil lines; after fireroom and forward engineroom flooded slowly; all propulsive and electrical power lost. Abandoned about 2 hours 40 minutes after being torpedoed and rammed; La Vallette sank the hulk by torpedo about an hour after abandonment, producing a magazine-scale detonation ('flame and fire rose to a height of at least 500 feet'); bow section located ~1 mile west and sunk with five depth charges, last seen sinking at 0311. Report concludes the bow loss alone would not have been fatal - 'there is no reason to suppose that she would not have been able to leave the scene of action under her own power had she not been rammed.'

    Limitations
Documents damage, flooding sequence, and the split machinery-space arrangement (forward/after firerooms, forward/after enginerooms) ship-specifically - valuable context for where era-standard insulation was installed, but the report addresses battle damage, not materials or asbestos content. No casualty count given in the narrative section. Timeline (hit 2301, abandon +2h40m) conflicts with DANFS's ~2205/2326 - carried in gaps.

Foundation transcription of this hull's own action reports: the CO's first-person loss narrative gives the engagement timeline in zone 'love' time (radar contact 2240; half-salvo torpedo launch 2253; main-battery fire opened 2255; torpedo hit 2301 in the right turn), reports two concussions (torpedo plus a Gun-2 magazine impression), describes securing all boilers and abandoning engineering spaces as water gained ('the after engineroom was completely flooded'), and gives the casualty breakdown: 0 officers killed, 11 men killed, 1 officer missing, 42 men missing; wounded 5 seriously + 12 officers and 29 men slightly (46 total). The report is signed G. R. WILSON - the commanding officer at the loss (McLean commissioned the ship but had been relieved before October 1943). The site narrative adds: DesDiv 41/DesRon 21 assignment in March 1943 with Nicholas, O'Bannon, and Strong; nicknames 'the Chevy' and 'Fighting French Cruiser'; '14-1/2 months in commission'; and the second Chevalier (DD-805) laid down at Bath 12 June 1944, transferred to Korea as Chung Buk after USN service to 2 June 1975.

Foundation-hosted transcription of primary Navy documents (secondary host); content is consistent with the action reports as cited in BuShips WDR-50 references (a)-(c), but the originals were not examined. Casualty figures (11 killed + 42 missing + 1 officer missing = 54; 46 wounded) differ in the wounded count from DANFS (36) - carried in gaps. The CO's belief that the hit was starboard-side from 'PT boats' conflicts with the BuShips port-side Type 93 assessment. No asbestos or materials content.

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Fletcher-class destroyer built 1941-42 with a four-boiler/60,000-shp two-shaft steam plant (class machinery: Babcock & Wilcox boilers, General Electric geared turbine sets) would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings; builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2), including the Harvard-team health survey of pipe-covering operations in naval-vessel construction conducted at the yard in 1942 (Fleischer & Viles, J Ind Hyg Toxicol 1946, PMID 21016030), which the yard record describes as documenting 'fairly serious dust risk' - contemporaneous with this hull's April 1941-July 1942 construction. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos record located for this hull in the public sources searched: no hull ACM survey, abatement record, materials inventory, donation/transfer hazmat disclosure, or museum disclosure exists to find - the ship was sunk in action in October 1943, before any such documentation regime, and never had a postwar phase. The wreck is unsurveyed in located authoritative sources (a community wikimapia entry and AI-generated pages assert a position/condition but are excluded per sourcing rules).

"aboard USS Chevalier"/"aboard the Chevalier": 0 opinions. "Chevalier" asbestos: 23 opinion hits, all surname/party-name collisions (e.g., St. Charles Surgical Hosp., Gilmore, Payment Card Interchange antitrust, Loeb v. Limitations
The attribution-clean queries (exact USS name in both spellings, aboard-vessel phrases) returned zero qualifying results - the strongest obtainable negative. Absence of indexed hits does not prove no litigation exists - RECAP coverage is incomplete for state-court filings and unindexed text, and the hull's commissioned window (1942-43) predates the asbestos-litigation era. Two-hull collision risk is real: any post-1943 'USS Chevalier' exposure claim is presumptively DD-805 (Gearing class, 1945-1975), not this hull.
