Built by Union Iron Works, San Francisco, Calif.; launched 26 May 1918, sponsored by Mrs. F. X. Gygax; commissioned 12 December 1918, Cdr. J. H. Klein Jr. in command. East Coast patrol/training 1918-19; patrolled the first transatlantic NC seaplane flight (April-June 1919) with port visits to the Azores, Gibraltar, Malta, and Constantinople; reduced commission from 19 November 1919 with Reserve Division 10; decommissioned San Diego 1 June 1922. Recommissioned 14 October 1940, assigned Defense Force, 14th Naval District; arrived Pearl Harbor 17 December 1940. On 7 December 1941, "she was moored in port and opened fire at the enemy planes, aiding in splashing one and hitting two more. She got underway for patrol immediately, making depth charge attacks on eight different contacts. Two of her crew were killed while on board Pennsylvania (BB-38) assisting in rescue work." Remained at Pearl Harbor through the war on patrol, inter-island escort, and submarine-training duty, with occasional convoy-escort voyages to San Francisco and Seattle. Departed Pearl Harbor 21 August 1945, arrived Philadelphia 13 September 1945; decommissioned there 15 October 1945; sold 4 October 1946. Received one battle star for World War II service.

- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials, ACM, or asbestos content. Live NHHC page returns 404; the verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio mirror is cited in its place, consistent with the link-rot pattern already documented for this dataset.

[2]USS Chew (DD-106) action report, "Air Raid Attack by Japanese -- Report on," Cdr. H. R. - Finding
- Official action report for this hull, filed by the Commanding Officer to the Commandant, Fourteenth Naval District, dated 10 December 1941: "this ship, berthed at X-Ray 5 on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, opened fire on attacking Japanese planes with one 3\"/23 caliber" at 0803; two .50 caliber machine guns were placed in action at 0811; "Fire was maintained continuously until 0934, when the third wave of attacking planes left the area." "One direct hit was scored by the 3\" gun crew, disintegrating a plane in mid-air"; two other hits were scored, one demolishing a plane's tail assembly; "no hits were observed from the 50 caliber fire." "A total of 28 depth charges were dropped on eight different supersonic [sonar] contacts in the area south-west of entrance buoy. Evidence indicated that two submarines were sunk." One casualty: Matthew J. Agola, S.2c., USNR, "killed during the action while engaged in rescue work on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania." One man missing: Clarence A. Wise, S.2c., USNR. Signed H. R. Hummer, Jr.

- Limitations
- Contemporaneous action report documents gunnery actions and casualties during the attack - it does not describe materials, ACM, or asbestos content aboard the ship, and contains no mention of hull damage or repairs. The report's contemporaneous claim that "two submarines were sunk" is the Commanding Officer's action-day assessment, not an adjudicated postwar finding; this record does not verify or rely on that claim for any purpose. Live NHHC page returns 404; verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio mirror cited.

[3]NARA, "Deck Logs, 1941-1959" descriptive page (Textual Records, Record Group 24; series "Logbooks of the U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1978") [other_primary]

- NARA descriptive page for 1941-1959 deck logs (RG 24); specific USS Chew volume(s) not identified
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NARA holds deck logs for U.S. Navy ships and stations covering 1941-1978 (Record Group 24 series, "Logbooks of the U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1978"), described by NARA as typically including a monthly title sheet, daily remarks sheets, and daily columnar sheets, held at the National Archives at College Park, MD. USS Chew's deck log(s) for her 1940-1945 Pearl Harbor-based recommission fall within this series's stated scope.

- 1940-1945 (unretrieved)
- Limitations
- This is a general NARA series description, not a ship-specific digitized record. USS Chew's individual deck-log volumes were not located online and were not retrieved or reviewed for this record; the series covers many vessels and a specific pull would require an in-person or mailed NARA request (College Park, MD). Establishes nothing about materials or asbestos aboard this hull.

[4]DANFS specifications block for this hull ("dp. 1,060"; "cl. Wickes"; "s. 35 k.") - class/era inference drawn from this ship-specific specifications data, not from a dedicated materials study [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS specifications block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference only: Chew was a Wickes-class "flush-deck"/four-stack steam-turbine destroyer built in 1918 by Union Iron Works, San Francisco - a WWI-era steam warship of a type whose class, as a whole, carried period-standard boiler and steam-line insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing materials common to naval steam propulsion of the era. Union Iron Works (San Francisco) does not appear in the Atlas shipyard dataset (37 yard_id entries reviewed) and has no yard-level record in that database.

- Union Iron Works construction trades, 1918 (era context only)
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no ship-specific finding is established by this row. This is not evidence that asbestos-containing material was installed, present, or handled aboard this specific hull; it does not identify products, quantities, or locations aboard USS Chew. No ship-specific asbestos documentation exists for this hull (see ev-05, negative finding); the hull was sold for scrap in 1946 and no surviving structure exists to survey.

[5]CourtListener API v4 sweep (authenticated, via fleet helper cl-auth-search.py): exact-name "USS Chew" (type=o and type=r) and hull-number "DD-106" (type=o and type=r), run 2026-09-26 [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-chew-dd106-03 through sl-uss-chew-dd106-06
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located. Exact-phrase "USS Chew" returned zero results in both opinions (type=o) and dockets (type=r). Hull-number "DD-106" returned zero opinion results; the 17 docket hits are name-collision false positives - the query substring is matched incidentally by docket numbers, party names, and firm names (e.g., "Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP", "Reiss+Preuss LLP"). Case captions reviewed (Brashier v. Quincy Property, Tucker v. East Side DD, LTL Management LLC, Lyondell Chemical Company, and 13 others) show none references a U.S. Navy destroyer, USS Chew, or DD-106 as a vessel; none qualify as litigation naming this hull.

- Limitations
- A public-index sweep confirms no located litigation naming this hull as of 2026-09-26; it does not prove no such litigation exists - PACER-gated dockets, sealed filings, and state-court records outside CourtListener's index are not searched. "Chew" is also a common surname, so a bare name-only sweep was not run without the "USS"/"DD-106" qualifier, to avoid false positives; see search_ledger for exact queries.
