- Official Navy history; contains no asbestos, insulation, or materials information. Does not give a Naval Register strike date (secondary compilations conflict: 1946-02-26 vs 1946-07-01) and compresses the Maritime Commission return/sale, which MARAD milestones split as custody 1946-06-30 and sale to Standard Oil 1947-05-16. Does not establish any exposure condition aboard.

- Finding
- Published Naval Institute Press history documents the Chicopee class (AO-34 and AO-35) as the first oilers acquired under emergency war regulations: the Standard Oil tankers Esso Trenton and Esso Albany had been ordered as replacements for their T3 namesakes already taken by the Navy; designed for 15.5 knots, they exceeded 17 knots on trials, making them among the fastest U.S. merchant tankers and ideal fleet-oiler candidates. Esso Trenton was acquired 1942-01-03 and, though completed a month after Esso Albany, became class lead ship as Chicopee (AO-34), commissioned 1942-02-09; after station-tanker duty at Casco Bay she ran unescorted coastal fuel runs between Gulf and East Coast ports at the height of the 1942 tanker sinkings, her speed chosen as defense against U-boats. The pair are described as 'less-powerful versions of the national defense tankers built for the Keystone Transportation Company' at the Sun yard.

- Finding
- MARAD record: year built 1941; U.S. Official No. 241220; shipyard Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock; tanker; length 520 ft, beam 68 ft; summer displacement 22,325 tons, lightweight 5,375 tons; fate 'Sold - Foreign Flag Op.' Milestones: Entry and Acquisition 1946-06-30; Disposition and Withdrawal 1947-05-16 'SOLD STANDARD OIL CO.' Vessel name history links CHICOPEE (AO-34), ESSO TRENTON, and SEA-LAND ADVENTURER (the latter record carrying Official No. 594073, 'built 1963, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' - consistent with secondary accounts that the 1963 container-ship rebuild was documented as a new hull incorporating the tanker's ends). Attached USN/USCG photographs include bow and stern views at Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, VA, 1942-08-16, with yard markings indicating alterations from the latest overhaul (NARA photo 19-N-32722 series, per Shipscribe).

- Limitations
- Milestone/custody and dimensional data only - no materials, insulation, or asbestos fields. The record's 'Specific Type: LNG Liquefied Natural Gas' is a data artifact for a 1941 oiler. Status-card scans are image-only files without a text layer; contents not OCR'd. The linked SEA-LAND ADVENTURER record is a different official number (594073); hull-identity continuity through the 1963 rebuild rests on secondary compilations.

- Finding
- Post-Navy chain per secondary compilations, corroborated at key points by MARAD name-history links: reverted to SS Esso Trenton 1946; renamed SS Esso Chattanooga 1947; bought by Sea-Land 1963 for container-ship conversion - fore and aft ends of Esso Chattanooga coupled to a new midship body built by Blohm & Voss and fitted at Bethlehem Steel, Baltimore, emerging as SS San Francisco (16,401 grt, 607 ft); bow and stern replaced by Mitsubishi at Kobe in 1978 retaining the 1963 midbody; renamed SS Sea-Land Adventurer 1978; SS Sea Adventure 1989; SS Maersk Constanza 1999; SS Sea Adventure 2000; SS Maersk Koper 2002; MSC Koper 2008; sold for scrapping, beached at Alang, India February 2010. Net effect: essentially no 1941 hull material remained after the 1978 rebuild, and nothing survives as a museum or memorial.

No abatement, hazmat survey, or scrapping-yard condition documentation located for any stage of the chain. Alang beaching carries era-typical asbestos-in-scrapping implications but no hull-specific record exists.

- Finding
- Chicopee's documented propulsion was a steam plant - geared steam turbine, single screw, ~9,000 shp, with two Babcock & Wilcox 'D'-type boilers per secondary spec compilations - built into a 1941 commercial tanker hull and converted to a Navy fleet oiler in early 1942. For steam-driven tonnage of this era and program, era-typical asbestos applications would have included boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging, turbine insulation, valve and flange gaskets, and machinery packing.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1941 construction and Navy-yard availabilities are consistent with era-typical materials, but nothing ship-specific was located.
