Ship's company (~575) plus embarked troops; construction trades (Western Pipe & Steel, 1942-43); conversion yard workers (Brooklyn, 1943)
    Limitations
Establishes identity, designation chain (AP-83 -> APA-38 -> LPA-38 = one hull), construction, and service narrative. Details resting on Wikipedia's post-DANFS additions only (kamikaze strike 2 April 1945; film appearance; Apollo 10 recovery tasking May 1969) are not in the DANFS entry and are flagged in prose as secondary. No asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

Authoritative for MARAD custody milestones and photo-captioned yard availabilities. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition-survey information; supports no asbestos claim. 'Year Built 1943' is MARAD's completion-year convention (keel laid and launched 1942). A digitized status card exists on this record's Status Cards tab but was not retrieved in this session.

Pa., filed 2012-10-31, terminated 2014-10-03), an asbestos personal-injury action under the MDL-875 umbrella (assigned to Judge Eduardo C. Robreno). The matched RECAP document is a defendant's response in support of summary judgment (Owens-Illinois, doc. 71, filed 2013-09-26).

Plaintiff William E. Carper (asbestos PI)
    Limitations
Pleading/discovery-stage presence only: the ship name occurs in indexed filed materials consistent with a plaintiff vessel/exposure list, but the document PDF was not retrieved through the authenticated helper (binary fetch unsupported, then fleet pacing limit), so the exact context of the ship's mention is not independently verified. No adjudicated exposure finding exists; a defendant's summary-judgment response is not evidence of exposure aboard this hull.

    Finding
CourtListener opinion-level search returned no opinion naming the ship in any context: 'USS Chilton' produced 0 results; 'APA-38' produced 14 results, all name collisions (the string matches Administrative Procedure Act pin cites and unrelated docket fragments - e.g., Overton v. Wilkie, CAVC 2018, verified on full text as an 'APA.38' paragraph cite in an Agent Orange/USS Providence case, not this ship); 'Chilton' AND (attack transport/USS/LPA-38/APA-38) produced 1 non-qualifying result (Reyes v. Beneficial State Bank). No opinion-level asbestos adjudication naming this hull was located.

Class/era inference: Chilton is a 1942 Maritime Commission C3-S-A2 hull completed to Navy attack-transport specifications with a geared steam turbine and two oil-fired D-type boilers. Peer-reviewed historical research documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in WWII-era U.S. shipbuilding; a steam plant of this design and era is consistent with asbestos insulation on boilers, steam lines, turbines, gaskets, and packing.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull asbestos survey, HAER recordation, abatement or removal contract, or hazmat disclosure for USS Chilton was found in the authoritative sources searched (DANFS/NHHC mirrors, NavSource, MARAD ShipHistory, shipscribe, NARA record-group guides). Targeted web searches for 'USS Chilton' + asbestos surfaced only attorney-marketing pages (asbestos-ships.com; simmonsfirm.com ship list), which are excluded per batch rules.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942 steam-driven hull is era-consistent with installed asbestos materials. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. Ship scrapped 1974, so no museum/abatement-disclosure channel exists.

(b) Launch sponsor - the DANFS transcription reads 'Mrs. W. A. Riley, Jr.' while Wikipedia reads 'Mrs. Henry A. Reilly Jr. (Matilda)'. (c) DANFS prints the Newport training-ship period as starting '31 January 1943,' before commissioning - read as 1944. (d) Conversion yard - DANFS says 'New York Navy Yard'; NavSource specifies Todd Erie Basin Shipyard, Brooklyn (both Brooklyn facilities; unresolved).
