    Finding
Federal-court record identifies four Foster Wheeler boilers in USS Chukawan's boiler room. Decedent Harold E. Cox testified he served aboard as E-2 fireman then E-4 boiler tender Jan 1967-Oct 1968 and saw the Foster Wheeler name on each boiler; plaintiff's expert Captain William Lowell (30-yr naval engineering officer) confirmed four Foster Wheeler boilers would have been present and testified they would have been delivered with asbestos-containing packing, gaskets, and insulation, intended to be serviced with asbestos-containing replacement parts, and that Foster Wheeler boilers used asbestos-containing gaskets 1964-1980. Corroborated independently by NavSource's ship spec: four Foster & Wheeler K-type boilers.

Harold E. Cox (boiler tender, aboard 1967-1968; died 2019, alleged mesothelioma); boiler-room crew of that era
    Limitations
Summary-judgment-stage record: the product-identification and asbestos-content statements are deposition and expert testimony found sufficient to reach a jury, not adjudicated facts. Does not quantify material aboard, does not establish exposure or causation for any individual, and does not address legal eligibility. Cox's Nov 2019 death and the Aug 2021 SJ denial are the last retrieved docket events.

    Finding
District court denied Foster Wheeler LLC's motion for summary judgment, finding a genuine fact issue under maritime law on whether Mr. Cox's exposure to Foster Wheeler's asbestos-containing boilers aboard USS Chukawan was a substantial factor in his mesothelioma: ~12 hours/day for 21 months in the boiler room, working on or in close proximity to the boilers, sweeping settled dust. Deposition-described work: removing boiler doors and rope seals, scraping/replacing boiler-door gaskets, and 'punching' (scraping) ~15 eight-foot fire tubes over two 12-hour days.

    Limitations
Denial of summary judgment means the evidence could go to a jury; it is NOT an adjudicated finding that asbestos was aboard or that it caused the illness. No trial verdict, settlement, or post-Aug-2021 disposition was retrieved. The exposure descriptions are the plaintiff's deposition testimony.

    Finding
The magistrate judge recommended GRANTING defendant Nash Engineering Co.'s summary-judgment motion: plaintiff offered no product-identification evidence that any Nash product was aboard or contributed to exposure aboard USS Chukawan, and Mr. Cox never testified to working on or around Nash products.

    Finding
Multi-plaintiff asbestos personal-injury complaint (Toxic Tort/Asbestos Personal Injury) against boiler manufacturer Cleaver-Brooks, Inc. lists 'USS CHUKAWAN from 1966 to 1968' in the service roster of plaintiff-side decedent Homer W. Means (Navy steward; also USS Walton DE-361, Renshaw DD-499, Holder DD-819, Robert L. Wilson DD-847, Bainbridge DLGN-25, Leahy DDG-16, Guadalcanal LPH-7). The complaint's product allegations center on Cleaver-Brooks asbestos products at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation only: the hull appears in a plaintiff's service-history list with no product identified aboard and no exposure finding. Unadjudicated; does not establish asbestos aboard this hull or any individual exposure. Docket bears a RICO cause label (18:1962) alongside the asbestos PI complaint; the case terminated 2021-08-31 - disposition detail not retrieved.

    Limitations
Historical narrative ends ~1963 (DANFS vintage) and contains no asbestos information. DANFS body text spells the name 'Chuckawan' and its stat-block beam reads 45' - both apparent typos (MARAD lists 75.25' beam); the ship's registered name is Chukawan.

Registry contains no asbestos or hazardous-material information. MARAD type T3-S2-A1 conflicts with the T3-S2-A3 label used by NavSource's header text and Wikipedia; the 553-ft hull and NavSource's own 13,500-shp propulsion block favor T3-S2-A1, but the conflict is unresolved and logged in gaps.

    Finding
The 3,100-acre former Bethlehem Steel site at Sparrows Point - the yard that built this hull - is a documented asbestos-contaminated industrial property in EPA RCRA corrective action: the 2014 Phase I ESA records suspect asbestos-containing friable debris piles near Machine Shop #2, cold-box insulation, suspect ACM (transite panels) in Reservoir Warehouses, asbestos-flagged materials-processing buildings, and ongoing pre-demolition asbestos abatement at the site.

    Limitations
Non-official compilation (NavSource Naval History) used as archival lead and corroboration - its spec block independently matches the four-Foster-Wheeler-boiler configuration testified to in Cox, but individual entries are uncited and the header's 'T3-S2-A3' label conflicts with MARAD's T3-S2-A1. Finding
No published or indexed court opinion names USS Chukawan or AO-100 (opinion-index search: zero qualifying hits; the single 'AO-100' hit is a Texas receivership token collision). No asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or materials list for the hull was located in the public sources searched - consistent with sale for scrapping in 1973, before the Navy's asbestos-management era.
