- DANFS service history: launched 1941-07-02 by Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR; sponsored by Mrs. W. Casey; outfitted by Puget Sound Navy Yard; placed in service 1941-08-15, LT H. H. Breed USNR in charge. Assigned to 14th Naval District; arrived Pearl Harbor 1941-10-17 for net repair/replacement, salvage, and net/boom defense maintenance. During the 1941-12-07 attack she manned her machine guns and 3-inch gun and closed net-defense gaps protecting the drydocks while being strafed. Salvaged YP-108 off Lanai June 1942; August 1942 escorted an MTB convoy to Midway and installed nets around the dock spaces. Commissioned 1942-12-20 (LT T. A. Ingham USNR as commanding officer); redesignated AN-12 on 1944-01-20. Arrived off Saipan 1944-06-16; patrols, assisted LST-84 after a bomb-started fire, inspected the Japanese net line in Tanapag Harbor; salvage/net ops at Saipan until 1944-11-18, then cable-laying at Guam and Ulithi; 1944-12-07 to 1945-06-30 net operations, moorings, and pipeline installation at Guam. Returned to the States 1945-07-27; net operations at Long Beach and out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard until 1946-08-24, then to Astoria; out of commission in reserve 1946-11-06 at Vancouver, WA. Two battle stars for WWII service.

- ShipScribe U.S. Navy auxiliary data compilation (Stephen S. Roberts) provides construction and disposal data: ordered 1940-07-27; keel laid 1941-02-24 (a date DANFS does not record); launched 1941-07-02; in service 1941-08-15. Class table records decommissioned 1946-11-06, stricken and disposed 1962-09-01, Maritime Administration reserve custodianship, MA sale award 1976-01-22. Notes row: 'Ex YN-7 20 Jan 44. Comm. 20 Dec 42. In USN reserve 1946-61. To NDRF 14 Jun 61. To buyer 17 Feb 76.' Class-level design context: all Aloe-class units ordered 1940-07-27/08-01 under the 1939-40 net-defense program derived from British net-layer/boom-defense prototypes; class design 560 t light / 805 t lim, diesel-electric 800 HP, 12.5 kts, 1 screw.

[5]Cross-source correction: DANFS text + ShipScribe class table vs NavSource 09/18/18012 / NavalCoverMuseum CINCHONA AN-12 / Wikipedia infobox [other_primary]
- Locator
- DANFS paragraph 2; ShipScribe ship-notes rows (class-wide 'Ex YN-x 20 Jan 44'); NavSource designation history line
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Designation-date cross-check: DANFS text states 'on 20 January 1944 was redesignated AN 12', and ShipScribe records the entire Aloe class redesignated ex-YN on 1944-01-20 (class notes rows: 'Ex YN-x 20 Jan 44' across units). NavSource prints 'Redesignated Net Layer (AN-12), 20 December 1944' and NavalCoverMuseum repeats 'December 20 1944'; the Wikipedia infobox follows the same 1944-12-20 figure while the Wikipedia body repeats DANFS's 1944-01-20. The 1944-01-20 date is carried; the 1944-12-20 figure is a probable transcription error propagated through secondary pages.

- Era-typical asbestos applications for a 1941 diesel-electric Navy auxiliary of this size: engine-exhaust and machinery insulation, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on the 12-ton net-handling winch/drum gear. Diesel-electric plant means no boiler or steam-turbine lagging pathway; the exposure-relevant systems are the diesel exhaust, auxiliary piping, and deck machinery.

- Finding
- Official environmental records document asbestos-containing material at the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA - the base Cinchona operated out of for net operations from 1945-07-27 to 1946-08-24 (DANFS). EPA Superfund profile CA7170024775 lists the site as a federal facility under state-lead cleanup; a DTSC EnviroStor basewide environmental baseline survey records ACM findings including 30-40 percent asbestos in steam-line insulation and ACM in buildings (e.g., Building 401), and that ACM issues were being addressed by the shipyard, the Department of Labor, and PWCSFB.

- Finding
- Naval Vessel Register check: the NVR AN-12 ship-detail URL returns only the generic NVR template with no vessel entry. NVR states it covers ships disposed of from 1987 onward (earlier disposals being added gradually); a vessel disposed of in 1946-1976 predates coverage. No NVR record exists for this hull.
