DANFS record for this designation's hull, carried under AM-160 only: 'AM-160: dp. 530; l. 184'6"; b. 33'; dr. 9'9"; s. 15 k.; cpl. 104; a. 1 3"; cl. Admirable.' Launched 24 December 1942 by Willamette Iron and Steel Corp., Portland, Oreg.; commissioned 14 March 1944, Lieutenant Commander D. N. Lott, USNR, in command; reported to the Pacific Fleet. Arrived Pearl Harbor 22 May 1944; two convoy-escort voyages to Kwajalein and Eniwetok; based at Eniwetok from 11 September 1944 guarding convoys to the Marianas, adding Ulithi in November, Tarawa and Majuro in May 1945, and Iwo Jima in June; sailed from Eniwetok 10 August 1945 for overhaul at Bremerton; arrived San Diego 13 January 1946; decommissioned there 12 June 1946 and placed in reserve; reclassified MSF-160 on 7 February 1955. DANFS prints no AMc-137 designation for this hull - unlike some Admirable-class entries (e.g., Adopt, where DANFS prints 'Originally projected as AMc-114'), the Clamour entry carries no contract-designation line; consistent with a pre-construction paperwork redesignation the ship never bore, but the AMc-137 string itself rests on NavSource (ev-02).

NavSource archive page for this hull, headed 'Clamour (MSF 160) ex-Clamour (AM 160) ex-Clamour (AMc 137)': 'Originally planned as Coastal Minesweeper Clamour (AMc 137); Reclassified as Minesweeper AM-160, 21 February 1942; Laid down 26 May 1942 by the Willamette Iron and Steel Corp., Portland, OR; Launched 15 December 1942; Commissioned USS Clamour (AM 160), 14 March 1944; Decommissioned 12 June 1946 at San Diego, CA; Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists out of commission, in reserve; Reclassified as a Fleet Minesweeper (Steel Hull), MSF-160, 7 February 1955; Scrapped in 1959.' Call sign November-India-Victor-November; five-officer CO roster printed (LCDR Davis M. Lott, USNR, 14 Mar 1944 - 18 Aug 1944, and successors). The Willamette contract was thus an AMc-designated order redesignated to the Admirable-class fleet-minesweeper program before keel-laying; AMc-137 was never carried by a ship in service.

    Limitations
Volunteer-compiled archival page - the sole located source that prints the AMc-137 designation and the exact 21 Feb 1942 redesignation date for this hull; corroborated by the uswarships.jounin.jp AMc table ('Clamour | AMc-137 | Willamette Iron & Steel | 1942/2/21 reclassified to minesweeper AM-160' - secondary reference, corroboration only, not cited as evidence) and affirmatively by the official register's 'AMc113-142 Now AM136-165' disposition note (ev-03). Its 15 Dec 1942 launch date conflicts with DANFS and NAVSHIPS (both 24 Dec 1942) and matches sister Change AM-159's official launch - likely cross-contamination, carried in gaps. Disposal and NVR-1949 details are NavSource-sole. Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding type

    Finding
The official 1945 BuShips register knows this hull only as AM160: the mine-sweeper builder/date table prints CLAMOUR AM160, Willamette Iron & Steel Corp. ('do' ditto), keel 26 May 42, launch 24 Dec 42, first commission 14 Mar 44; the propulsion table prints CLAMOUR AM160, Alco 539 ('do'), 1,710 shp, 'F.B.' (Farrel-Birmingham) single reduction gear. The register's coastal-minesweeper (AMc) disposition table prints the block entry 'AMc113-142' with disposition 'Now AM136-165' - the official register itself documents the wholesale pre-construction reclassification of the AMc-113..142 contract block to AM-136..165, which maps AMc-137 to AM-160 (the uniform +23 offset) exactly as NavSource's hull-specific line states; the general index likewise lists 'Clamour - AM160' only. Collision guard: the same register prints ADOPT under AM137 (Tampa Shipbuilding Co.) - a different hull, so AMc-137 is not AM-137.

Contemporaneous official register - establishes that the built hull served and was registered only as AM-160, and officially documents the AMc113-142-to-AM136-165 block reclassification (the register's disposition note 'Now AM136-165' corroborates NavSource's per-hull 'AMc-137 reclassified AM-160, 21 February 1942' without printing the AMc number against the Clamour name or the date). Contains no materials or asbestos information. The 1,710 figure is the class-table shaft-horsepower entry, not labeled per-engine or aggregate; OCR noise in the scanned table does not affect the row's substance.

    Finding
All-tier consolidation: AMc-137 and AM-160 are one contract hull, not two vessels. The batch listing 'USS Clamour (AMC-137)' resolves to the canonical record uss-clamour-am160 (PRIMARY Tier 2), which carries the full service history (commissioned 14 Mar 1944; Pacific escort duty; Bremerton overhaul; decommissioned San Diego 12 Jun 1946; MSF-160 reclassification; reported 1959 scrapping), the archival leads, and the era/type asbestos inference. The redesignation was a systematic block action, not a hull-specific event: the official NAVSHIPS register prints 'AMc113-142' as a block annotated 'Now AM136-165' (ev-03); NavSource prints the same 21 Feb 1942 date and the same +23 number offset for sister Change (AMc-136 to AM-159), and DANFS/NavSource document AMc-114 to AM-137 (Adopt). This record exists so the former designation resolves to the canonical hull rather than reading as a second vessel.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
All federal archival records for this hull are indexed under AM-160, not the AMc designation: NARA Special List 44 (named-vessels table) indexes one deck-log run as 'Clamour (AM-160)' covering 3/14/1944 - 6/30/1945 (RG 24, Entry 118, Archives II). Nothing is indexed for July 1945 onward - the Iwo Jima convoy additions, the Bremerton overhaul, the San Diego transit, and the 12 Jun 1946 decommissioning all fall outside the indexed run. The hull does not appear on NARA's published digitized deck-log list, so the run is retrievable only via textual reference. NARA's asbestos-research guide identifies the series that would hold hull-level material specifications - RG 19 Minesweeper and Minelayer General Information Books (Entry P-11, Item S-68) and hull-number-arranged Ship Engineering Drawings (S39 Insulation and Lagging, S48 Piping, S103 Booklets of General Plans). Any researcher tracing 'AMc-137' must search the archive as AM-160.

USN complement aboard the built hull, Mar 1944 - Jun 1945
    Limitations
Archival lead only - verifies that NARA indexes one log run for this hull under AM-160 and its date coverage, not the logs' content (unsurveyed; no retrieval performed). The SL-44 ship-number PDF does not carry an AM-160 line (its AM block lists AM-66..95, 134, 315-389) - the named-vessels table is the operative locator. Deck logs are operational records, not materials documentation; the RG 19 series are identified as the asbestos-relevant lead by NARA's own guide but nothing was pulled or confirmed to survive.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located under any designation: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed case naming USS Clamour / AMc-137 / AMC-137 / AM-160 / MSF-160 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Litigation coverage is incomplete rather than negative: CourtListener API v4 returned HTTP 429 on all three authenticated queries this session ('USS Clamour', 'AMC-137', 'AMc-137'; 2800/day shared cap exhausted, ~9,700s to reset), matching the canonical record's same-day block; a fallback general web search surfaced only marketing listicles naming the vessel (mesothelioma.com, mesotheliomahelp.org/Belluck minesweeper list pages - excluded as non-authoritative) and one unrelated MDL-875 opinion naming other vessels (Damon v. GE - USS Independence, USS Lake Champlain), classified as a name collision.

    Limitations
Coverage gap, not a clean negative: the exact-name and designation-string CourtListener searches could not be run (HTTP 429, shared daily cap; backed off per batch rules rather than retrying into a ban). CourtListener coverage in any event skews to digitized federal opinions and RECAP dockets. Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-44-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing machinery fittings; does not establish presence or absence, exposure, or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Era/type inference for the physical hull - built as AM-160, a steel Admirable-class fleet minesweeper at Willamette Iron & Steel, Portland, 1942-44, during the period when the wartime federal pipe-covering survey documents asbestos insulation work in naval vessel construction - plausibly carried period-standard asbestos-containing materials in applications typical for the type: diesel exhaust lagging, engine-space insulation, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, fireproofing, accommodation insulation, and deck covering. Because the plant was diesel (two ALCO 539 engines, no boilers or steam lines - the NAVSHIPS class block prints geared 'Diesel' drive for AM136-165), the dominant WWII asbestos pathway aboard steam vessels - boiler and steam-line lagging - did not exist on this hull. This inference applies identically here because AMc-137 is the same hull's pre-construction designation.

    Limitations
Inference from era, builder, and vessel type only - no ship-specific document names any asbestos product aboard this hull under any designation; no material schedule located (NARA RG 19 series, ev-05, are the lead). Applies to the built hull AM-160; the AMc-137 designation itself carried no ship and so has no asbestos history of its own. The 1946 survey does not name this vessel, the Willamette yard, or the Admirable class, and its reassuring conclusion is itself now criticized as deeply flawed (Kelly, New Solut 2026;36:138-150, PMID 42307414).

    Population
Willamette Iron & Steel trades (documented windows 1956 and 1960s-70s, not the 1942-44 build)
    Limitations
Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - and the documented window (1960s-1970s fill-in work) post-dates this hull's 1942-44 construction by two decades; the dataset's own evidence row is flagged 'disputed' (the opinion names only 'Willamette Shipyard' - identification as WISCO Portland is an inference the source does not make). A second published opinion (Albina Engine & Machine v. Director, OWCP, 627 F.3d 1293 (9th Cir. 2010), carried in the canonical record) documents stipulated exposure at WISCO in 1956 - likewise post-dating construction. Nothing establishes asbestos conditions at the yard during the build window or aboard this hull.
