    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The printed spec block's '94'6"' length is an evident typographical slip for 194'6" (class literature and NavSource agree ~194') - the slip is logged in gaps, not silently corrected. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track DANFS where both exist. Contains no asbestos content. Commanding-officer table lists Montague's tenure starting '10 April 1944' - a probable typo for the 30 April 1944 commissioning date (uboat.net concurs 30 Apr 1944); logged in gaps. The 1947 transfer predates modern ACM-handling regulation; no hazmat or material record for the transfer or any post-transfer service was located.

The 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization lists 'AN 42 CLIFFROSE - Lt. G. E. Cox (10535)' under Mine Squadron Twenty (ComMinRon 20, Capt. R. A. Larkin), alongside sisters AN 39 Bitterbush, AN 41 Baretta, AN 44 Corkwood, AN 45 Cornel, AN 46 Mastic, and AN 47 Canotia - placing this hull in the mine-warfare net-layer force during the Okinawa operation. The named CO matches NavSource's officer table (Lt. George Edward Cox, USNR, 10 Jun 1944 - 12 Sep 1945).

In the Navy Occupation Service Medal / China Service Medal (extended) eligibility table, 'Cliffrose (AN 42)' carries a China Service credit line of '31 Dec 46 - 10 Jan 47' - her Shanghai arrival-through-transfer window.

An official post-storm casualty table for Typhoon Louise (9 October 1945, Buckner Bay/Nakagusuku Wan, Okinawa) lists 'AN 42 | CLIFFROSE | Grounded' - this hull went aground in the typhoon that sank 12 ships and craft and grounded 222. Sister AN 52 Snowbell, listed immediately below, grounded and was beyond economical repair (hulk blown up January 1946 per secondary class literature). Cliffrose survived: she cleared Okinawa 25 October for Bungo Suido per DANFS, consistent with refloat/repair. DANFS does not mention the grounding - the CinCPac report supplements the service narrative.

NARA's Special List 44 inventories surviving logbooks for Cliffrose (AN-42) spanning 1 May 1944 - 30 June 1945 - early commissioned service through mid-1945 (the surviving-log window; it does not assert commissioning/decommissioning dates). These WWII-era logs are held at NARA (College Park) but do NOT appear in the digitized deck-log index (archives.gov 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' contains no Cliffrose entry) - physical/undigitized archival lead.

The war-diary sequence is not fully complete in the returned set (no July 1944 or April 1945 monthly file seen; the AA action report is the April 1945-era document), and no diaries post-October 1945 appear - consistent with post-VJ phase-out.

    Finding
A diesel-electric, wooden-hulled net layer built 1943 at a WWII emergency yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel-electric auxiliary of this type and period were machinery and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and friction material (brake linings) on net-handling winches and the 12-ton boom. The wooden hull carried no structural thermal insulation of the steel-ship type, and there is no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply - but engine-room, galley, and accommodation applications remained era-standard.

CORRECTION: a NavSource photo-caption page carries the caption 'On the forward deck of USS ROSECLIFF (AN-42)' for a forward-deck view of this hull. No U.S. Navy vessel named 'Rosecliff' existed; AN-42 was Cliffrose, and the identical image (091804202.jpg) appears on NavSource's own USS Cliffrose (AN-42) page labeled correctly. The caption text itself - 'not much net in sight but 135 tons of mooring chain were below in the forward hold and lower hold' - is retained as the photo's substantive description of this hull's configuration.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or secondary-source litigation naming USS Cliffrose (YN-61/AN-42) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet-paced helper returned exit 2 (shared ~58/hr budget momentarily spent, ~45+ concurrent batch sessions) on every spaced attempt over ~2 hours; all four mandated base queries are logged pending in search_ledger, NOT as negative results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com et al.) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
