Class data: C3-S-A2 design, 8,500 shp Westinghouse turbine single screw, 18.4 knots. - Limitations
- Secondary compilation, not an official document - dates it supplies (keel, ferry commission, strike, MA sale) are not verified against primary records in this session, though its NDRF entry (8 Sep 1960) and buyer delivery (21 Nov 1970) agree exactly with the MARAD milestone table, and the 1 Sep 1961 strike date is consistent with an independent secondary source (NavalCoverMuseum). Contains no asbestos or materials information. Machinery vendor attribution (Westinghouse turbine) conflicts with another secondary compilation listing General Electric - not resolved, not carried.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this C3-S-A2 hull was built (1943) and converted to a submarine tender (1944-45) - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard government and merchant hulls.

- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel and does not establish that asbestos was or is aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. The ship-specific asbestos documentation level is therefore class_or_era inference only.

- Finding
- CourtListener sweep (authenticated API v4, 2026-09-26) by vessel name and hull number located NO qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS Clytie / AS-26. Queries and classifications: '"USS Clytie"' opinion search - 0 results; '"Clytie" asbestos' opinion search - 0 results; '"AS-26"' opinion search - 1,167 hits, top-screened all name collisions (Nebraska appellate decisions citing statutes and unrelated parties; no vessel named); '"USS Clytie" OR "AS-26"' RECAP docket search - 36,259 hits dominated by 'AS-26' collisions, top-screened all unrelated (property forfeitures, consumer/debt, product-liability MDLs; no vessel named); '"Clytie"' docket search - 65 hits, all debtor-name collisions (personal bankruptcy cases, e.g. Clytie Sherrod, Clytie Evans; no vessel named).

- Limitations
- No qualifying asbestos litigation found: opinion indexes returned zero hits for the vessel name (exact name = 0, name+asbestos = 0); 'AS-26' is a high-collision string (statute/section-style references, 1,167 hits screened) and 'Clytie' docket hits (65) were all personal-bankruptcy debtor names - no screened hit named a vessel. Fleet pacing delayed the sweep ~30 min within the session; all five queries completed. CourtListener does not index all state-court or trial-level pleadings, so absence from its indexes is not proof that no claim was ever filed. Nothing here establishes or defeats exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or condition report naming the Clytie hull was found in the public sources searched - the DANFS entry contains no asbestos or insulation statement; the MARAD ShipHistory record and status cards contain none; no museum or preservation record exists (the hull was scrapped). - Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a WWII-era steam auxiliary of this construction period is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull was scrapped without a surveyed condition record. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
