- Finding
- The NHL nomination describes this hull as one of the last thin-skin Gato-class boats built before the Navy switched to the Balao design (300-foot test depth). Ship data: 312 ft; 20 kt surfaced / 9 kt submerged; 1,526 t surfaced / 2,424 t submerged; crew 8 officers + 72 enlisted; ten torpedo tubes, 3"/50 deck gun. Significance period 1943-1945; builder Electric Boat. Notes six patrols sinking 13 Japanese ships totaling more than 18,000 tons for four battle stars, and dedication as an International Memorial to submariners on 23 August 1970 at Manitowoc.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific federal documentation; contains no asbestos, hazmat, or material content. Crew figure (80) conflicts with DANFS (60) - carried in gaps. The 13-ships/18,000-ton figure conflicts with DANFS's 16,835 tons - both retained with sources.

- Museum states: Cobia was brought to Manitowoc in 1970 to serve as an international memorial to submariners; incorporated into the Manitowoc Maritime Museum in 1986; restored to her 1945 configuration; dry docked in 1996 with a multi-year interior restoration (WWII-era flooring, bunks, metal trim, crew lockers supported by a 1998 Wisconsin DOT STEP grant); volunteers returned main engines #1 and #2, the SJ-1 radar, and the radio shack to operational status. In September 2025 she underwent a comprehensive dry-dock inspection and preventative-maintenance availability at Fincantieri's Sturgeon Bay shipyard (~$1.5M; hull inspection and protective coatings).

- Locator
- class-f/gato-class.class.json (house class profile)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Gato-class context: diesel-electric fleet submarines with no boilers or steam plant; era-consistent asbestos pathways for the class include diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration materials, and battery/electrical materials. Construction (1943) and service-era yard periods (New London, Portsmouth NSY 1953) fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's documented 1945-configuration restoration is itself consistent with retained era materials. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
