- Full DANFS entry is three sentences; it does not record builder, acquisition, dimensions, armament, or the Pearl Harbor attack itself. Live NHHC URL 404'd (known NHHC link-rot pattern, cf. - Construction and conversion workforce (1936, 1940-41); wartime crew
- Limitations
- Scanned official document; OCR transcription was used to extract figures - column alignment was manually verified against table headers. Resolves secondary-source conflicts in favor of official figures (acquisition 23 Oct 40, builder 'Seattle S. B. & D. D. Co.'). Gives no complement figure for this type and contains no asbestos or insulation-materials data.

[3]Vice Admiral Homer N. Wallin, 'Pearl Harbor: Why, How, Fleet Salvage and Final Appraisal' (Naval History Division, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1968), Appendix G, 'Ships Present at Pearl Harbor and Vicinity, 7 December 1941' (HyperWar transcription) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Appendix G table, p. 363 (AMc 8 - Cockatoo)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Official Navy salvage monograph's ships-present tabulation lists 'AMc 8 - Cockatoo' among U.S. Navy vessels present at Pearl Harbor at 0800 on 7 December 1941, carrying none of the volume's sunk/destroyed markers (footnote 4). The table's own footnote excludes yard craft and small non-commissioned craft - Cockatoo appears as a commissioned vessel inside the harbor nets.

- Population
- Crew aboard during the attack (~12-17 per secondary sources)
- Limitations
- Presence list only: it does not record damage status for ships that were hit but not sunk (e.g., Maryland), so absence of a marker does not itself prove 'undamaged'; no asbestos relevance. The companion Joint Committee ships-present list (PHA Pt. 12) omits district craft entirely and does not show Cockatoo.

[4]USS Ward (DD-139) deck log, 7 December 1941 (NARA deck-log transcription, HyperWar) [other_primary]

- Finding type

- Finding
- Ward's deck log records at 0035 'U.S.S. Reedbird and U.S.S. Cockatoo stood out and commenced minesweeping operations' and at 0510 'U.S.S. Reedbird and U.S.S. Cockatoo ceased sweeping operations and stood in' - i.e., Cockatoo swept the Pearl Harbor channel entrance with Reedbird in the hours immediately before the air attack and had returned inside by morning.

- Limitations
- A third ship's log entry - establishes Cockatoo's operational minesweeping duty on 7 Dec 1941 but not her own log entries. Secondary compilations cite a 0748 Cockatoo log entry ('sounded general quarters, manned machine guns; commenced firing') consistent with the Section Base, Bishop Point mooring, but the AMc-8 deck log itself was not directly retrieved (see archival_lead row). No asbestos relevance.

[5]BuShips 'Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, 1945,' Vol. II, p. 48 machinery table (same source as ev-02), read against era practice for small diesel conversions [other_primary]
- Locator
- Machinery table, p. 48; construction table, p. 49
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The documented plant aboard this hull is diesel-only - one Atlas 4HM 2124 (240 bhp), single screw, diesel-driven generator - with no boilers or steam system. The era-typical asbestos mass of steam plants (boiler insulation, steam-line lagging, flange gaskets across a steam circuit) is therefore absent by design. For a 1936 wooden fishing-vessel conversion of this size, plausible asbestos-bearing items are limited to diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets/packing, and small insulation or brake-lining applications typical of the period.

- Engine-room crew; conversion yard workers (1940-41)
- Limitations
- Inference row, not a finding: the machinery spec is ship-documented, but no materials manifest, insulation schedule, or asbestos reference exists for this hull or for AMc conversions generally. 'Diesel-only' bounds the plausible product set - it does not prove any product was or was not present. Do not read as 'asbestos-free.'

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement or conversion contract, hazmat disclosure, or materials manifest naming Cockatoo (AMc-8) or Vashon (ON 235434) was found in the official/authoritative sources searched (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 185-ton district craft of this era rarely generated surviving asbestos-specific paperwork. The hull was sold to commercial fishing in 1947 and burned/sank in 1949, so no surviving structure exists to survey. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS Cockatoo (AMc-8) located. Every returned opinion and docket hit is a name collision: 'cockatoo' the bird (pet custody, animal-law, Endangered Species and trademark cases), Cockatoo, Inc. (the Miami Beach nightclub - e.g., SMHEREHBF v. Cockatoo, C.D. Cal. 2:92-cv-01090; Blue Seas Music v. Cockatoo), and unrelated 'AMC'/'Vashon' tokens (Anchorage Municipal Code citations; Vashon Island, WA references). No case names the vessel or the hull number.

- Limitations
- CourtListener covers published opinions and RECAP dockets; an unindexed state-court filing, a complaint alleging exposure aboard, or a trust-claim record naming this hull would not appear. 'Cockatoo' is a high-collision term; review was by case name, court, and snippet - a buried vessel reference inside a long opinion could be missed. Absence of litigation evidence is not evidence of absence of exposure.

- Locates the primary records most likely to hold the ship's own operational detail (her own deck log) and to resolve the unverified items carried in gaps (strike date, complement, pre-Navy merchant registration). The 13 May 1941 San Diego photo would be her earliest post-conversion image.

NavSource is a non-official volunteer compilation used solely to identify the NARA photo number; NARA catalog v2 search for '19-N-24600' returned nothing (not digitized or under alternate indexing). Deck logs and MVUS are official holdings but were not pulled; nothing here is evidence of condition or materials.
