NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but conflict with DANFS/shipscribe on three dates (arrival, conversion completion, builder's hull number; see gaps). Page live-verified 2026-10-05 (navsource.net - the .org domain is dead). Contains no asbestos content. No photographs of this hull exist in the archive. The Combat Action Ribbon and battle-star display is NavSource's award reconstruction - see ev-04.

    Finding
Shipscribe records for this hull: one of 24 vessels acquired under the District Craft Act of 26 June 1940 (CNO directed acquisition 3 July 1940) as the 'small acquired YN' group YN-33 through YN-56 - all but one (MARIN, YN-53, a converted purse seiner) were modern harbor tugs. COCKENOE row: acquired 21 December 1940, builder Gulfport Boiler & Welding, completed 1940, in service 31 December 1940; builder's hull #157; 79 gross tons, 70.9' x 18.0' x 8.5', 400 hp; conversion by Naval Station Key West completed 13 February 1941; to YNT-15 on 1 May 1942; struck 25 February 1947; disposal 16 July 1947 via Maritime Commission; mercantile CHARLES E. BROWN in 1948. Class notes: all 24 tugs of the YN 33-56 group were reclassified YNT on 8 April 1942 effective 1 May 1942; all but YN-51 (Skinner Unaflow steam) were diesel-propelled; group armament 'small or none'; conversions were primarily fitting-out periods, not net-handling rebuilds.

    Limitations
Compilation from official Navy records (40-year reference work, shipscribe.com) - reliable for acquisition/designation/disposal but not itself a primary document. Conflicts with NavSource/DANFS on gross tonnage (79 vs 86), draft (8.5' vs 9'2"), conversion date (13 vs 15 Feb 1941), decommissioning (ca Dec 46 vs 18 Jan 47), and builder's hull number (157 vs 167) - all carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos content. The embedded correspondent account (Dec 7 strafing, late-1970s hurricane destruction) is a single uncorroborated report - see ev-04 and gaps.

  4. [4]NavSource Cockenoe (YNT-15) page - 'Cockenoe was present at Pearl Harbor, 07 December 1941', Combat Action Ribbon (Pearl Harbor), one battle star; corroborated in detail by the shipscribe correspondent account; official 'ships present' lists exclude 14th Naval District yard craft [other_primary]

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Cockenoe was present during the Japanese attack of 7 December 1941. NavSource states 'Cockenoe was present at Pearl Harbor, 07 December 1941' and displays a Combat Action Ribbon (Pearl Harbor) plus credit for one WWII battle star. A correspondent account in the shipscribe vessel notes reports that on 7 December 1941 she was working as a torpedo net tender at the mouth of Honolulu Harbor and was strafed along with two other vessels while trying to leave that harbor. DANFS independently places her permanently at the Honolulu Harbor entrance from June 1941 'throughout her naval service.' The official 'Ships Present at Pearl Harbor' list (Wallin report Appendix G) expressly excludes 'yard craft assigned to the Fourteenth Naval District, and other small non-commissioned craft,' so her absence from that list is expected and does not bear on presence.

    Limitations
Presence is documented by a secondary compilation plus a single correspondent account - no primary action report, deck-log extract, or award citation was located for this hull. NavSource's 'present at Pearl Harbor' uses the broad sense of the term; her documented station was the Honolulu Harbor entrance, several miles east of the Pearl Harbor nets. No individual exposure or casualty claim is made.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered harbor tug completed in December 1940 and taken into Navy service sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small naval tug of this period were gaskets, valve and pump packing, engine and exhaust insulation felts in machinery spaces, and electrical insulation; deck coverings and coatings of the period could also contain asbestos. As a diesel craft she carried no boiler or steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply to this hull, and her small size (86 gross tons) bounds any material quantity.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YN-47/YNT-15. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

    Finding
NARA inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YNT-15 covering 23 October 1941 through 30 September 1945 - the heart of her wartime service at the Honolulu Harbor entrance. The logs are held at Archives II, College Park (RG 24) but are NOT digitized: a full check of the NARA 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' index on 2026-10-05 returned no Cockenoe/YN-47/YNT-15 entry. These logs are the primary open lead for her deck-level detail, including her 7 December 1941 activity and any recorded maintenance or material events.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS Cockenoe (YN-47/YNT-15) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener exact-name searches returned only name collisions: four Connecticut opinions on Cockenoe Island / Cockenoe Flats shellfish beds, and seven dockets led by the 'Cockenoe Holdings Ltd.' creditor entity in the FTX bankruptcy - none vessel-related, none asbestos. A secondary web sweep for 'Cockenoe' + asbestos returned no qualifying litigation and no ship-specific asbestos material at all; unlike larger hulls, this vessel does not appear even in law-firm marketing lists.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1940 naval tug plausibly carried era-standard materials. Both hull-number CourtListener base queries ("YN-47" opinion and docket) were still pending fleet pacing reset at drafting; final status is recorded in the search_ledger. Deck logs and Maritime Commission disposal files are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
