    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Museum curator history documents: keel laid 21 July 1942 at Electric Boat, Groton; five diesel engines built at General Motors' Cleveland Diesel plant; mothballed 1946; recommissioned 1951 for NATO anti-submarine exercises (LANTFLEX '52 - credited with 'sinking' a U.S. carrier); decommissioned 1954; towed through the newly opened St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 to serve as a Cleveland Naval Reserve training vessel; stricken 1971; Navy transferred guardianship to the Cleveland Coordinating Committee to Save Cod, Inc. in January 1976; opened to public tours May 1976; NHL designation 1986. Museum credits her with more than 12 vessels totaling more than 37,000 tons sunk and 36,000 tons damaged, and states she is the only U.S. submarine memorial without stairways and doors cut into her pressure hull.

    Locator
    class-f/gato-class.class.json (house class profile)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Gato-class context: diesel-electric fleet submarines with no boilers or steam plant; era-consistent asbestos pathways for the class include diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration materials, and battery/electrical materials. Construction (1942-43) and service-era yard periods (New London, Philadelphia 1945-46) fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS Cod / SS-224 located: exact-name "USS Cod" returned two unrelated RECAP hits and zero opinion hits; "SS-224" and "SS-224"+asbestos returned unrelated litigation and exhibit-string collisions only.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public docket does not prove absence of exposure or of filings - state-court and non-digitized records are not covered, and CourtListener indexes are not exhaustive. Establishes only that no qualifying case was found in the searches logged (see search_ledger).

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-cod-ss224-01 through sl-uss-cod-ss224-08
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for SS-224: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, HAER documentation, or docketed case naming this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's documented uncut-pressure-hull integrity is itself consistent with retained era materials. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
