- Finding
- Official disposal record for this hull in Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, 1931 edition (Bureau of Ships): the 'Stricken from Navy List' table (vessels disposed of since June 30, 1929; status July 1, 1931) lists 'COGHLAN (ex-DD326) - Destroyer, 1st line - Stricken Oct. 22, 1930; sold Jan. 17, 1931,' and the List of Naval Vessels entry for DD326 repeats 'Destroyer, 1st line; stricken Oct. 22, 1930; sold Jan. 17, 1931.' The same table documents that a large cohort of flush-deck destroyers (Charles Ausburn, Billingsley, Breck, Case, Converse, Dale, Lamson, and others) received identical Oct. 22, 1930 / Jan. 17, 1931 stricken/sale dates - the group disposed of under the 1930 London Naval Treaty limits described by DANFS as 'treaties limiting naval armaments.'

- Finding
- NARA's research guide describes potential asbestos-relevant Navy record groups for the 1941-1961 period, including RG 19 destroyer General Information Books and S39 insulation/lagging and S48 piping drawings, and states that deck logs and muster rolls do not directly show asbestos aboard ships. For this hull, built 1919-1921 and sold 1931, the analogous records are the earlier Bureau of Construction and Repair / Bureau of Steam Engineering correspondence in RG 19 (predecessor bureaus, filed under 'DD326' and 'DD186 Class' in the Navy Filing Manual scheme) and RG 24 deck logs for 1921-1930 - the guide's stated window postdates this vessel entirely.

- Limitations
- This is a research guide, not a Coghlan material record. Its stated coverage is 1941-1961, postdating this hull (1919-1931); the applicable predecessor-bureau record path (RG 19 BuC&R/Steam Engineering correspondence, RG 24 deck logs) is inferred by analogy and not confirmed by the guide. It does not show that a Coghlan GIB exists or that this ship contained asbestos.

- Peer-reviewed era documentation of Navy asbestos use covering this hull's construction window: Franke & Paustenbach (2011), evaluating published and unpublished documents 1900-1970, report that 'beginning in the 1880s and continuing well into the 1950s, amosite and chrysotile fibers, and to a much lesser extent crocidolite, were used extensively as insulating materials on naval ships,' and that Navy specifications required asbestos in insulation, gaskets, packing and other shipboard materials.

- Era-level documentation of asbestos use in naval construction generally; does not name this vessel, class, or builder yard and establishes nothing about this hull's materials or any individual exposure. Disclosure context: published by defense-side authors (ChemRisk); carried as era documentation, not as advocacy for any litigation position.

- Finding
- The official sources and catalog entries reviewed for this record did not yield a ship-specific asbestos survey, product schedule, abatement record, or material finding for Coghlan. Asbestos presence aboard DD-326 remains unknown. Law-firm marketing pages (mesothelioma.com destroyers list; mesotheliomahelp.org; simmonsfirm.com navy-ship list; asbestosnavy.com; mesotheliomasymptoms.com) name this hull and assert era-typical asbestos content without primary support - excluded as a source class per batch rules and logged in the batch report.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. A 1919-1921 steam-plant destroyer is era-consistent with asbestos-containing insulation, and the hull's 1930 decommissioning and 1931 scrapping are undocumented disturbance phases. Underlying NARA drawings, BuC&R correspondence, deck logs, and the scrapping-sale file were not obtained. Does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

- Finding type

- Finding
- An authenticated CourtListener API v4 opinion search for the exact phrase 'USS Coghlan' returned HTTP 200 with count 0 - no published opinion names either ship of this name (DD-326 or the WWII DD-606). Hull-number opinion ('DD-326') and docket-type queries ('USS Coghlan' dockets, 'DD-326' dockets) were repeatedly blocked by the fleet pacing guard on 2026-09-27 and remain unreturned; the litigation sweep is therefore incomplete.
