- Documented for this hull: laid down 1 July 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 8 September 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Henry Bohnsack; commissioned 23 October 1943, Lt. M. J. Prince, USNR, in command. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater: Marianas operation (capture and occupation of Saipan, June-July 1944; Tinian capture and occupation, July 1944); Western Caroline Islands operation (capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, September-October 1944). 'LST-129 was redesignated IX-198 on 5 December 1944 and was decommissioned on 20 January 1945. She was destroyed on 16 May 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 19 June 1946.' 'IX-198 earned three battle stars for World War II service as LST-129.'

[5]DANFS, Seaward II (IX-209, ex-LST-278) - documents the 2 October 1944 storm collision with LST-129 at Peleliu and LST-129's relief of LST-278 as port post office at Kossol Roads [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS Seaward II (IX-209) entry, paragraphs covering Oct-Nov 1944
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The DANFS entry for LST-278/Seaward (IX-209) documents this hull twice by name: 'On 2 October [1944], while unloading cargo on Peleliu despite rough seas and a 45-knot wind, LST-278 collided with LST-129 and suffered severe damage'; and, of LST-278, 'She served as a port post office at Kossol Roads from 13 to 28 November when LST-129 relieved her of the duty.' This places LST-129 in the Peleliu/Kossol Roads area during the 2 October storm and then on port-post-office station duty at Kossol Roads from 28 November 1944 - immediately before its 5 December 1944 redesignation to IX-198.

- crew during Peleliu/Kossol Roads station duty (Oct-Dec 1944)
- Limitations
- Names this hull but describes LST-278's damage - DANFS does not state that LST-129 itself was damaged in the collision/storm (a secondary source, uboat.net, claims LST-129 was damaged off Palau at 06 deg 59'N 134 deg 13'E; unverified). The parallel here is contextual: LST-278 was likewise a damaged LST converted to IX-209 for station duty. No asbestos or material content. Page live via Firecrawl 2026-10-02.

- Secondary compilation of official Navy data (HyperWar Foundation, compiled by Patrick Clancey, last updated 2006) - not a primary registry; its 'Used for: Training' label is the only sourced statement of IX-198's role and is consistent with the damaged-LST station-ship conversion pattern (see ev-04). Misspells the name 'Cohassett'. No asbestos content.

[8]Era inference built on: BuShips SDB-1945 v2 machinery data (diesel LST-1 design group, no boilers); NavSource spec block for this hull; era amphibious-ship construction practice; GAO HRD-80-2 Navy asbestos-era documentation (ev-08) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered tank landing ship built mid-1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel LST of this type and period were: diesel exhaust and muffler lagging; engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation; gaskets and valve packing; deck coverings and tile; bulkhead and accommodation insulation; and winch/windlass brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Her December 1944 conversion to IX-198 auxiliary duty (after the Palau storm events) added the interior-rework scope typical of damaged-LST conversions.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-129/IX-198. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Inland-yard (Evansville 'cornfield yard') construction does not change the era inference - the same BuShips design and material practice applied.

- Finding
- GAO full text documents the Navy asbestos era this hull was built inside: thermal insulation 'was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships'; the military specification for thermal insulation 'had been changed in 1973' to specify asbestos-free materials, yet some ships were still delivered with asbestos insulation 'as late as May 1978'; the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace 'only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed to accomplish necessary repairs,' modified in 1979 to add selective replacement in high-maintenance areas; 30-50% of asbestos insulation was lagging and cover material; and 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables.' LST-129's 1943 construction predates the 1973 substitution change by 30 years.

[10]Batch-6699 search ledger (this record): DANFS LST-129 + Cohasset III + Seaward II entries; NavSource 160129; HyperWar IX-198; BuShips SDB-1945 v2; GAO HRD-80-2 full text; NVR; NavSource-hosted CTF-32 op-plan scan; shipbuildinghistory builder table; NARA deck-log lead; CourtListener opinion searches (partial); secondary-web litigation sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-cohasset-lst129-01 through -17
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming LST-129 or Cohasset (IX-198) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener coverage is PARTIAL: completed opinion searches returned no result for 'USS Cohasset' and 'LST-129', and two name-collision hits for 'IX-198' (Delaware Chancery corporate cases, not ship-related); remaining queries ('LST 129', 'Cohasset' + asbestos, docket-type searches) could not be run because the fleet-wide CourtListener pacing budget was spent this session - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The secondary-web sweep surfaced only law-firm marketing content (freeasbestostesting.com lists 'USS Cohasset (IX-198)' in an auxiliary-ships listicle without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and litigation coverage is genuinely incomplete (docket/RECAP search space unsearched this session). The ship was destroyed as a target in 1946, so no in-service abatement era exists; if any exposure records exist they would sit in WWII-era deck logs, MVB&I yard records, or the conversion work package - none located in digitized form. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
