- DANFS record for this hull: spec line (DD-85: dp. 1,060; l. 315'5"; b. 31'9"; dr. 9'2"; s. 35 k.; cpl. 100; a. 4 4", 12 21" tt.; cl. Wickes). Launched 21 February 1918 by Fore River Shipbuilding Co., Quincy, Mass.; sponsored by Miss A. Colhoun; commissioned 13 June 1918, Commander B. B. Wygant in command; reported to the Atlantic Fleet. Convoy escort New York-European ports 30 June-14 September 1918; sound-equipment experiments at New London from 10 November 1918; assisted stranded transport Northern Pacific at Fire Island 1 January 1919 (carried 194 troops to Hoboken). Reduced commission at Philadelphia Navy Yard 1 December 1919; overhaul at Norfolk Navy Yard and reserve period at Charleston, S.C.; decommissioned at Philadelphia 28 June 1922. Towed to Norfolk Navy Yard 5 June 1940; converted to high-speed transport; recommissioned as APD-2 11 December 1940; Norfolk-Caribbean training until sailing for Noumea, New Caledonia, arrived 21 July 1942. Carried units of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion in the initial Guadalcanal assault landings 7 August; served as transport and antisubmarine vessel supporting the invasion. At 1400 on 30 August 1942, on patrol off Guadalcanal, struck in a Japanese air raid: first hits wrecked boats and after davits and started a diesel fire; second attack brought down the foremast, blew off two 20mm guns and one 4" gun, and damaged the engineering spaces; two more direct hits killed all men in the after deck house. Tank lighters from Guadalcanal rescued the crew; sank at 09-24' S, 160-01' E. Fifty-one killed, eighteen wounded. One battle star for WWII.

- Finding
- NHHC overview independently corroborates the DANFS history: a 1,060-ton Wickes-class destroyer built at Quincy, Massachusetts; commissioned June 1918; Atlantic convoy escort for the remainder of WWI; November 1918 underwater-sound experiment duties; 1919 Atlantic Fleet operations in the Caribbean and off the east coast; reduced commission December 1919; decommissioned June 1922 and laid up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for the next eighteen years; taken to the Norfolk Navy Yard June 1940 and converted to a high-speed transport; recommissioned December 1940 as APD-2 for Atlantic/Caribbean amphibious development work; arrived south Pacific July 1942; helped land U.S. Marines on Tulagi 7-8 August; sunk off Lunga Point by Japanese bombers 30 August 1942 with the loss of 51 crewmembers.

- Finding
- Official ONI combat narrative names this hull in the invasion order of battle: TransDiv TWELVE under Comdr. Hugh W. Hadley comprising destroyer-transports Colhoun (Lt. George B. Madden), Little (Lt. Comdr. Gus B. Lofberg, Jr.), McKean (Lt. Comdr. John D. Sweeney), and Gregory (Lt. Comdr. Harry F. Bauer). The narrative records the four destroyer-transports leaving the Task Group One antisubmarine screen for Noumea, New Caledonia (arrived July 20th), then proceeding to Bulari Bay to embark the First Raider Battalion for the Guadalcanal-Tulagi landings.

- An official Navy action report on the loss of this hull exists and is cited as a source in the official Army history: 'Action Report, Loss of U.S.S. Colhoun and the U.S.S. Gregory, 13 December 1942 (Serial 00486).' The report itself (wartime correspondence serial, NARA RG 38 / CNO records) was not retrieved; it is the strongest surviving primary lead on damage and loss details for this hull. Separately, the Destroyer History Foundation lists an E. Andrew Wilde illustrated ship-history booklet for Colhoun (APD-2) compiled from primary documents (action reports, war diaries, muster rolls) - a further archival lead.

- Finding
- Era/plant inference: a WWI-era Wickes-class (Bethlehem-design 'Little' group) steam destroyer built 1917-18 at Fore River Shipbuilding, Quincy - four Yarrow water-tube boilers and Curtis geared turbines as built - would have carried era-standard asbestos applications: boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging, flange and valve gaskets, machinery packing, and fireproofing. The June-December 1940 conversion to APD-2 at Norfolk Navy Yard (forward boilers removed per the as-converted two-boiler spec, troop berthing and four LCP(L) davits added) is a documented yard period where insulation disturbance and replacement would have been routine. Both yards are in the Atlas shipyard dataset with yard-level asbestos documentation: fore-river-shipyard (evidence_tier 3, litigation-documented) and norfolk-naval-shipyard (evidence_tier 2, named asbestos products documented; EPA Superfund site VA1170024813). NARA RG 19 'General Information Books'/BuShips material schedules are an archival lead for hull-level specifications.

No materials schedule, survey, or hull-specific document was located; the ship sank in 1942 so no postwar documentation chain exists. The dataset's Fore River litigation record covers 1967-1970 - a different era from this hull's 1917-18 construction; the Norfolk NSY records document yard-level products, not materials installed in this hull during conversion.

[8]CourtListener API v4 sweeps (authenticated, 2026-09-25): "USS Colhoun" type=o; "Colhoun" type=o; "Colhoun" asbestos type=o; "APD-2"/"DD-85" type=o [court_record]

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located in CourtListener opinion/docket indexes. Exact-name "USS Colhoun" opinion search returned zero hits. The 183-hit surname set "Colhoun" resolves to person-name collisions (e.g., Colhoun v. Smithsonian Institution; Colhoun v. United States - a Navy paymaster's pay dispute; counsel/judge names) with no vessel reference. "Colhoun" + asbestos returned six hits - all asbestos cases where a person named Colhoun appears (the Meehan/Celotex Florida chain, Wildenberg v. Eagle-Picher, Nance v. Johns-Manville, American Optical v. Spiewak, and the 1931 patent case Brydle v. Honigbaum); none reference a vessel. Hull-number queries "APD-2"/"DD-85" returned 27 hits, all token collisions with no ship context. The Fletcher-class second Colhoun (DD-801, in commission 1944-1963) is a distinct hull; no qualifying hits for it appeared under the name sweep either.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-85/APD-2: no hull ACM survey, no abatement or hazmat record, no museum disclosure, and no qualifying litigation naming the vessel. The hull was sunk in combat on 30 August 1942, so the postwar documentation channels that produce ship-specific asbestos records for surviving hulls (museum drydock reports, disposal-condition hazmat disclosures, postwar veteran litigation) do not exist here.
