DANFS record for this hull: launched 10 April 1944 by Todd Pacific Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, Wash. (construction-era name Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp. - same Harbor Island yard, renamed June 1944); sponsored by Captain K. K. Johnson, WAC; commissioned 8 July 1944, Comdr. G. R. Wilson in command; Pearl Harbor 10 October 1944; Iwo Jima 19 February 1945 (screening, radar picket, fire support); hit by enemy shore batteries 1 March (1 killed, 16 wounded); repairs at Saipan; Okinawa radar picket from 31 March; on 6 April 1945 answered USS Bush's call for help during the first heavy kamikaze raid, took four kamikaze hits plus bomb damage (keel broken, both boilers pierced, 20'x4' underwater hole), and was finally sunk by gunfire from Cassin Young (DD-793) at 27 deg 16' N, 127 deg 48' E. DANFS spec block: dp 2060; 376'6" x 39'8" x 17'9"; cpl 320. Casualties: 32 killed, 23 wounded, two of whom later died. One battle star.

Seattle-Tacoma construction trades 1943-44; wartime crew (DANFS complement 320)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The consulted transcription reads '1946' for the February Iwo Jima arrival and the April 6 attack - the hull sank 6 April 1945, so those year readings are transcription/original-print errors; 1945 is carried. DANFS gives no laid-down or strike date. Mirror transcription cited because live NHHC DANFS pages return 404 (tested 2026-09-27 across four URL patterns).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Official BuShips engineering analysis names this hull: Table II (Governing Elements in Loss of Destroyers Sunk by Gunfire, Bomb or Kamikaze Attack) lists COLHOUN (DD801), 2050T, Kamikaze, Okinawa, 4/6/45, classified under 'B. Structural Failure - b. Sagged by the stern' - consistent with DANFS's account of a broken keel and loss by scuttling.

    Population
Wartime crew at time of loss
    Limitations
Tabular classification of the loss mode only - the report carries no ship-by-ship narrative section for DD-801 and no materials or insulation content. Confirms the hull sank from structural failure after kamikaze damage; says nothing about asbestos aboard.

    Finding
Builder-name resolution: the hull's builder is recorded as 'Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp.' in construction-era references and as 'Todd Pacific Shipbuilding Corp.' in DANFS. These are the same Harbor Island, Seattle yard - the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation's Seattle and Tacoma yards were renamed Todd Pacific Shipyards, Inc. in June 1944, after this hull's 10 April 1944 launch and before her 8 July 1944 commissioning. The yard (organized by Todd Seattle Dry Docks with General Construction Co.; $9M Navy-funded destroyer facility built 1940-41) delivered 45 destroyers in WWII.

Resolves the builder-name discrepancy only; establishes the yard's identity and 1944 rename, not materials aboard this hull. Yard-level asbestos documentation for Seattle-Tacoma/Todd Pacific was not located, and the yard is not an Atlas shipyards.json entry.

    Finding
Era/class inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer built 1943-44 with a four-boiler, 60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings; the Navy's documented asbestos-use era spans this hull's entire existence (built 1943-44, sunk 1945 - before the early-1970s substitution documented in GAO HRD-80-2). The Fletcher class carried an identical machinery plant across eleven builder yards.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No ship-specific insulation specification, BuShips material schedule, or asbestos record was located for DD-801; builder-yard asbestos documentation for Seattle-Tacoma/Todd Pacific is not located and the yard is absent from the Atlas dataset. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

CourtListener opinion index complete for this hull: "USS Colhoun" exact-name and "Colhoun" "DD-801" hull-number opinion queries each returned 0 hits - no published opinion names this hull. The RECAP docket leg ("USS Colhoun" and "DD-801", type=r) could not be executed: the authenticated helper's fleet-wide pace limiter refused every attempt across ~75 minutes (8 spaced retries); logged blocked in the search_ledger rather than retried into a ban.

    Limitations
Opinion-index sweep is complete and negative; the pleading/docket layer (RECAP) remains unchecked at this batch's close - unadjudicated complaint references, if any exist, would live there. A sunk-in-1945 hull with zero opinion hits and no qualifying Fletcher-class case in the class profile has a low expected hit surface, but the docket gap is real and carried open.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-801: no hull ACM survey, no abatement record, no hazmat or salvage disclosure, and (per the CourtListener sweep row) no qualifying asbestos case naming this hull. As a 1945 war loss the hull had no postwar service, transfer, museum, or scrapping phase; the sunken wreck's material condition is undocumented.
