- Finding
- DANFS: 'The second Colington was launched 13 January 1945 by American Bridge Co., Ambridge, Pa.; and commissioned 21 February 1945 as LST-1085. After serving with the navy occupation forces in Asia after World War II, she was reclassified AG-148 on 27 January and named Colington on 1 February 1949. She was again reclassified to AKS-29 on 18 August 1951 and stricken from the Navy List 1 April 1960.'

- Finding
- NHHC carries this hull under two entries: 'LST-1085 was redesignated AG-148 and named Colington (q.v.) on 27 January 1949' (LST-1085 stub) and the Colington II entry above. A separate DANFS entry confirms the name disambiguation: 'The first Colington (YFB-43), formerly Elmer W. Jones, served in a noncommissioned status in the 5th Naval District during World War II' - the earlier ferry is a different vessel and is not this hull.

- Shipscribe compiled ship note for COLINGTON (AKS-29): '(ex AG 148, ex LST 1085, comm 21 Feb 1945.) Reassigned to ComServPac effective 1 Jan 1946. Conv. to mobile spare parts issue ship at Pearl Dec 1945 to Apr 1946, then modified as ordnance spare parts distribution ship. At Guam 10 July to 20 Nov 1946. On 20 Nov 1946 CinCPac reported that she could no longer be employed full time in the 1st Fleet as an ordnance spare parts ship and recommended replacement by an unmodified LST. CNO noted that the conversion as ordnance spare issue ship contemplated ready reconversion to normal characteristics. Designated for inactivation 6 Dec 1946, left Pearl Harbor 10 Jan 1947 for San Francisco but then used as a temporary ferry at Bremerton for the duration of a ferry strike. This duty completed 21 Mar 1947, ship placed OCIR (Out of commission in reserve) 26 Jun 47 in the Bremerton group, then towed by ATA 195 to the Columbia Group on 2 Jul 1947 and completed inactivation. To AG 148 and named 1 Feb 1949. Not reactivated for Korean War. To AKS 29 18 Aug 1951. Offered for sale 21 Sep 1960 with a bid opening date of 13 Oct 1960 and again offered on 8 Feb 1961 with bids to be opened on 3 Mar 1961.' Construction table: keel 1 Dec 1944, launched 24 Jan 1945, American Bridge, Pa.; disposition table: decommissioned 21 Nov 1947, struck 1 Apr 1960, disposal 2 Jun 1961 Navy sale. Class note: of the five converted LSTs (Electron AG-146/LST-1070, Proton AG-147/LST-1078, Colington AG-148/LST-1085, League Island AG-149/LST-1097, Chimon AG-150/LST-1102), all but Colington were reactivated for Korean War service in August 1950.

- Finding
- A 1945-built diesel-powered LST sits inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos era. Because the design carried no steam plant, the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; era-typical applications for a vessel of this type were diesel-engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation. The December 1945-April 1946 conversion to a mobile spare-parts issue ship at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard involved interior rework and is a documented disturbance/rework event on this hull; the 1960-61 Zidell cutting of the hull to a barge is a documented demolition event.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, work package, or abatement record located. - Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming LST-1085 / Colington (AG-148 / AKS-29) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: the CourtListener repository search could not be run this session - the authenticated fleet helper returned pacing-exhausted on seven spaced attempts; logged as blocked in the search ledger, an open gap rather than a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and only law-firm marketing content (freeasbestostesting.com lists 'USS Colington (AG-148)' among auxiliary ships asserted to contain asbestos) - unsourced listicle material, excluded by source policy and not treated as evidence.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; the ship's era, Navy conversion rework, and demolition are consistent with era-standard materials. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs (NARA, held but not digitized for this hull), Pearl Harbor conversion work packages, and any Zidell breaking/abatement records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
