    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry narrative ends in 1960 - it predates the ship's 1972 decommissioning and Brazilian transfer, which are documented only in secondary compilations (ev-02). Entry gives no laid-down date. The hazegray transcription contains two OCR misprints ('8 January 1967', 'April 1968') where the NHHC text reads 1957/1958 - NHHC Wayback capture governs.

    Finding
Post-DANFS disposition (NavSource corroborated by Navypedia class table and Brazilian NGB record): laid down 28 March 1944 (NGB reads 29 March - carried in gaps); decommissioned 17 September 1972; stricken from the Navy List 27 September 1972; transferred and incorporated into the Brazilian Navy the same day, 27 September 1972, in a ceremony at the Boston naval arsenal (Boston Naval Shipyard) per Aviso n. 0933 do MM de 20/09/72; renamed CT Mato Grosso (D-34), second Brazilian ship of that name; first Brazilian CO CF Sergio Alves Lima. Mato Grosso stricken July 1990 and broken up for scrap.

    Limitations
Secondary-compilation data (NavSource, Navypedia, NGB) - no primary U.S. register record located; the Naval Vessel Register does not cover this pre-1987 disposal. The Brazilian NGB page cites an official Ministry of the Navy notice number and date for the transfer. Post-transfer material history and scrapping conditions in Brazil are undocumented in located sources.

    Finding
Builder-yard record contemporaneous with this hull's construction: the Owens-Illinois industrial health survey at Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock, Kearny, N.J., 30 August-2 September 1944 - the final two weeks DD-705 spent on the ways there (launched 17 September 1944) - documented insulator work with Johns-Manville Superex amosite pipe covering and boiler insulation, with dust counts measured during cutting and fitting operations in confined shipyard spaces. The Atlas yard record also documents Kaylo (Owens-Illinois) pipe/boiler insulation at the yard 1948-1958 and Garlock gaskets 1930-1975.

    Population
Federal Shipbuilding Kearny insulators and pipefitters, wartime peak (~35,000 employment)
    Limitations
Yard-level documentation, not a hull record: the survey does not name DD-705 and does not establish that any particular product was installed aboard this specific hull. Application to this vessel is era/yard inference only per batch discipline - a contemporaneous overlap, not a ship-specific finding. Kaylo's documented yard window (1948+) postdates this hull's construction.

    Finding
Era inference: Allen M. Sumner-class construction (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, 2 GE geared steam turbines, ~60,000 shp) in March-November 1944 falls squarely inside the Navy's documented shipboard asbestos-insulation era - GAO HRD-80-2 records that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and substitution did not begin until the early 1970s. No FRAM conversion or other major modernization is documented for this hull (NavSource lists the class configuration 'as built'), so there is no later documented yard-disturbance period of the FRAM II type.

Construction trades 1944; crew 1944-1972; overhaul yard workers (locations per gaps)
    Limitations
Program-level era context only; neither GAO nor the class spec establishes that asbestos products were aboard this hull. The absence of a documented FRAM conversion narrows documented disturbance events to routine overhauls (locations mostly unnamed - a 1959 Boston Naval Shipyard overhaul appears in secondary ship-association material only). Finding
Litigation sweep: exact-phrase searches "USS Compton" returned zero results at both opinion and docket level - no published opinion or indexed RECAP docket names this hull verbatim. "DD-705" (type=r) returned four hits, all numeric name collisions, none qualifying: In re Asbestos Products Liability Litigation No. VI (JPML master docket - index-level string match, role unresolved but not a vessel-naming pleading); Flogrown LLC v. Dixie Heritage LLC (M.D. Fla., trademark); 888extramoney.com LLC v. Meridian Enterprises (S.D. Cal., patent); Lyondell Chemical (Bankr. S.D.N.Y.) - 'DD-705' functions as a document/model number in these dockets, not a hull reference. The Siegfried v. 3M Co. ECF No. 50 removal-joinder record (the ~45-vessel exposure list that supplies ship-specific pleading rows for USS Lofberg DD-759 and other Atlas hulls) was reviewed in full text via the Internet Archive RECAP mirror: the vessel list (Long Beach Naval Shipyard electrician, alleged window ~1969-1996) does NOT include USS Compton - a verified non-hit, not an unsearched lead. Name-collision discipline applied: 'Compton' is a common surname and a California city, so unqualified 'Compton' query results are treated as collisions and not probative; only exact-phrase 'USS Compton' and 'DD-705' queries are treated as ship-bearing.

    Limitations
Verified negative at both search levels for the exact name; the four 'DD-705' docket hits are classified as collisions - the JPML MDL-875 index-level match was not resolved to a specific filing (fleet pacing budget exhausted before the follow-up 'DD-705' opinion-level query could run; see sl-uss-compton-dd705-05), but no 'USS Compton' hit exists at either level to corroborate a vessel reference. The Siegfried full-text check is a verified non-hit.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping hazmat disclosure, NVR entry (pre-1987 disposal), museum record, or docketed case naming this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Litigation-marketing pages naming DD-705 (asbestos-ships.com, mesothelioma.com, mesothelioma-funds-administration.org) exist but are excluded as banned sources.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the documented asbestos era at a yard where asbestos insulation products are documented in contemporaneous use (ev-03). The post-1972 foreign custody and Brazilian scrapping leave no retrievable U.S.-side disposal documentation. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
