DANFS entry, Conquest II (AMc-71), disposition paragraph

    vessel_history
    Finding
Conquest was transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 9 August 1946 and delivered the same day to Gorton-Pew Fisheries Co., Ltd., of Gloucester, Mass. Sources disagree on the strike date: one rendering of the DANFS entry states she was "stricken circa 1946," while a separate search result places striking from the Navy Register on 19 December 1945; the earlier date could not be independently confirmed against a primary Navy Register excerpt this session.

    Finding
This record (USS Conquest, AMc-71, an Accentor-class coastal minesweeper in service 1942-1946) is a distinct hull from USS Conquest (AM-488, redesignated MSO-488 on 7 February 1955), an Aggressive/Agile-class ocean minesweeper laid down 26 March 1953 by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Wash., launched 20 March 1954, commissioned 8 July 1955, decommissioned 29 June 1994, and sold to the Republic of China Navy in 1995 as Yung Tzu (MSO-1307). The two ships share only a name and consecutive-looking hull symbols; they were built more than a decade apart, by different builders, in different classes, for different missions. PRIMARY all-tier check for this batch found no other matching hull among researched designations and names.

    Limitations
Preemptive duplicate-merge guard, not a correction of a specific erroneous claim already in this record. AM-488/MSO-488 identity details were cross-checked via general web search rather than a directly fetched NHHC DANFS page for that hull (not separately retrieved in this session); the builder, class, and construction-date separation between the two hulls is wide enough that misidentification is not plausible.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. Navy and merchant shipbuilding during World War II, the era and wartime small-craft construction program (1941-42, commercial and converted-fishing-vessel yards under Navy contract) under which this Accentor-class coastal minesweeper was built.

WWII shipyard workers and small-craft crews (class/era context)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, its builder (Warren Fish Co.), or the Accentor class, and does not establish that asbestos was ever installed aboard, or remains aboard, this specific hull. No class-specific technical manual or machinery specification (of the kind available for larger classes) was located for the Accentor class in this session, so no product list is asserted. Establishes no quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation for AMc-71.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos documentation - survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, condition report, or construction specification naming machinery or insulation materials - was located for USS Conquest (AMc-71) in the official and primary sources searched: NHHC/DANFS, NARA online records guide, Naval Vessel Register search, and general web search. Conquest was a small (approx. 195-ton), wooden-hulled coastal minesweeper sold out of naval service in 1946 into private fishing use; no museum, memorial, wreck-survey, or preservation record was found, which forecloses the kind of hull-condition documentation (e.g., HAER survey, NPS nomination) available for larger preserved vessels in this dataset.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos-containing material aboard this hull during its 1941-46 Navy service or subsequent civilian use; it means no such record was found via the channels searched this session. Establishes no presence, absence, exposure, or legal-eligibility determination.

    Locator
Search results, 0 hits for the three ship-identifying queries; 3 unrelated hits for the bare "AMc-71" string query
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Authenticated CourtListener searches (opinions and dockets, API v4, via the batch's required authenticated helper) for the exact ship name "USS Conquest," for "USS Conquest AMc-71," for the combined query "Conquest AMc-71 asbestos," and for the bare hull string "AMc-71," returned no qualifying asbestos case naming this vessel. The three records returned by the broad "AMc-71" string search were unrelated: a Delaware Court of Chancery stockholder dispute (Vejseli v. Duffy, C.A. No. 2025-0232-BWD), a Delaware corporate-governance opinion, and a Texas Court of Appeals mandamus matter (Thomas, Ricky, WR-24,422-02) - each a coincidental text/OCR-fragment match, not a name collision on the ship or a case naming her.

CourtListener's indexed corpus (RECAP federal dockets, published/unpublished opinions, oral arguments) is not exhaustive of all state-court filings, sealed matters, or settled/unfiled claims; a negative search result does not establish that no asbestos claim naming this vessel was ever filed, only that none was found in this corpus as of 2026-09-23.

Taylor, wife of a Navy lieutenant commander); and delivered to the Commandant, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, on 9 March 1942, being accepted and placed in service the same day at her building yard.

    Limitations
The live NHHC URL returns HTTP 404 as of 2026-09-23 (confirmed by direct fetch, not merely a fetch-tool error). This finding is reconstructed from search-engine cached excerpts of the official page, cross-verified across multiple independently phrased queries returning identical proper-noun detail (builder, sponsor name, delivery date), and consistent with Wikipedia's public-domain mirror of the same DANFS entry. No independently retrievable primary mirror was reached this session - ibiblio.org/hyperwar's DANFS AMc series has no amc71.html (404), and navsource.org was DNS-unreachable in this environment. Re-verification against a live or archived primary copy is recommended before publication. Establishes construction/delivery identity only; contains no asbestos information.

After fitting out at the Charleston Navy Yard (1-15 April 1942), Conquest sailed for Yorktown, Va., arriving 1 May 1942 to begin training at the Mine Warfare School. Assigned to the Caribbean Sea Frontier, she reported to the Commandant, Tenth Naval District, for duty with the Inshore Patrol, operating from the Section Base at St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and was reassigned to the Caribbean Sea Frontier base at San Juan, P.R., on 29 June 1944, operating in Caribbean waters for the remainder of World War II.
